Title: need to achieve high speed
Post by: callumP on September 09, 2011, 01:04:14 PM
my apprenticeship have sent me an hours ride at 30mph and i want to half the time it takes if i can, i have done nothing to it yet were shal i start, im thinking variator then a new 80cc cylinder. will the standard carb be able to cope with the 80cc

I don't know about the 4 strokes, but it would be pointless going the 80cc without upgrading the carb as well.
More power!!! Also less chance of running too lean and causing heating problems.

Ideally, you should achieve a scooter with a bigger engine.

From all I read you won't gain much Top End speed from an upgraded Cylinder.  It will help with acceleration but the added speed was minimal.  Like maybe 3 to 5 MPH

From what I have read with right Variator/ tranny set up you will gain around 5 mph. and maybe another 5 from the cylinder upgrade.  So maybe in perfect setup with perfect conditions you can get to about 50 to 55 mph on a good day.  But then you risk wearing out the engine faster with the bigger cylinder and you have to work on tuning to make sure it is running perfect.

So basically if this is you daily ride I wouldn't do the Cylinder upgrade.  if a weekend ride then it may be worth it for fun.

But you want more reliable everyday power and speed then go with bigger scoot with bigger engine.

Getting a bigger scooter would be cheaper, handle the speeds better, and be more reliable.

Firstly I would get it deristricted to yield the 42mph Kymco quote for a derestricted Agility 50. Consists of usual Jet, smooth boss and CDi mod if MY2009 or less. Then a sport Variator all of which are quite cheap. If looking for a bigger engine then go and buy a 125 or even a 100cc bike like a Honda Lead which will work out cheaper in the long run I am sure.

im not aloud over 50cc so i would be doing the 80cc kit on the sneak and i only need top end speed for one day a week where i have to ride for an hour to get to my welding course. so a variator is the way to go?

My setup gives me 55 (speedo) on a good day. In my opinion anything over a 72cc kit is putting a lot more stress on the engine than its worth and requires more tuning and money.

I did all the usual derestrictions ,smooth boss, cut cdi, iridium plug and the most I could do on a good day and a long stretch was 42 mph. I then sent for a race variator and gained no speed whatsoever. Do yourself a favor and don't buy into the hype of 50+ mph,it just doesn't happen. I fell for those stories and drove myself crazy for about a year and found out in that time from scooter shops and forums that no one is truly getting 50 mph and I have a hard time beleiving 45 mph although that may be possible. Try to be happy with what you have or get a bigger scoot....stay stress free

Dale4, I got 52 mph (garmin gps) and tacho off the scale. Usual de-restriction + 740 mm belt.

The best one can do on agility 50 is regular maintanace, iridium spark plug and variator upgrade to racing and right rollers and torque spring. Also drive belt wear is affecting top speed and general performance a lot. So belt check and replacing is gonna make things better and good to your variator.
Big bore kit is a waste of money if you ask me. oem CDI is giving a max of 9.000 rpm's and that is what you get whether it's 50, 70 or 90 cc cylinder. All you'll get is better start and mid range performance but have in mind you need a bigger diameter carburettor and it doesn't come cheap. Also, bbk is putting  more stress and wear on your crankshaft and other components.

Kymco ZX50, 2-stroke, 47mm cyl. 44mm, tzr50 cdi, OKO 24 mm carb and crappy yms exhaust, in excess of 9,800rpm, speedo past fuel gauge, gps at 94 km/h

puting a 80 cc or even a 70 cc is not worth it unless you have a big pocket book and you are ready to fix everything that burns up after that.best thing is a bigger scoot all around.

Đale, i dont know why your not getting over 42mph  ??? Is that a gps 42mph or on the speedo?

My derestricted a50 does 45 all day on the flats, usually 45-47 mph on the speedo most days unless its windy? Derestricted, 5.5g rollers, 1000rpm torque spring and race variator, stock exhaust and stock air box?

Can get it doing 48 on the flats with 7.5g rollers but acceleration and uphills is too slow so i stick to 5.5g's.

Check your belt isnt too worn, something must be up? Ive even hit 50 on the speedo before downhill on a good day with the heavier rollers

Callum, i dont think you will gain that much top end with a bigger kit fitted, like resolve says maybe 50-55 mph onhe speedo on a good day. Wat it will give you is better acceleration, better uphill speed and more power. After a full derstrict and race variator you will get to around 45mph on he speedo, at least, maybe upto 45-48mph. You wont have as much power as the bigger kit but you need to weigh up if the extra time and money is worth going for the kit.

Why not do the derestrict 1st, fit a race variator and see how it feels like that? You need these parts really anyway if doing the bigger kit so you wont waste money on them if you do decide to get the kit later.

Didnt mean to do 2 posts  there, tried to modify my post to add an answer to callum. You get w ;Dhat im saying anyway

Streido said it, start with the smaller stuff you would need to do anyway then start thinking about a BBK if you're not happy with the results after that. That's what I did and only ended up going the BBK route because I live in a very hilly area and it felt unsafe and annoying having cars pass me all the time when I could only do 20-25mph uphill post BBK I'm doing 40-45mph uphill. Much better and safer for my area.

right so first things first
smooth boss
cut cdi unit
race variator with 5.5 gram rollers

just one question, where do you get smooth bosses?

is everythink i need in this kit?

where abouts is the cdi box located so i can cut the wire?

Smooth boss - http://www.exportstrength.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_44_332&products_id=403 (http://www.exportstrength.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_44_332&products_id=403)

Some race variators come in a kit with the boss inc, think  the Pollini variator does and the malossi multivar kit has it too as well as a 1000rpm torque spring for in the rear pulley to improve uphill speed and speeding back up after slowing down for bends etc.

That kit you put up will fit, seems a bit pricey tho for a brand i never heard of. A pollini kit is about 45 last time i looked and thats a brand name bit of kit.
This is the one i fitted for now, cheap but it works ok so far http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RACE-VARIATOR-GY6-50-KYMCO-BAOTIAN-LIFAN-Chinese-/300540989339?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item45f9a38f9b (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RACE-VARIATOR-GY6-50-KYMCO-BAOTIAN-LIFAN-Chinese-/300540989339?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item45f9a38f9b)
Eventually i may get a multivar or pollini, but this does me for now.

And the cdi box is in by the battery. Remember to upjet your main jet to an #82 jet too.

the kit i posted seems ok, it has the variator the smooth boss and 3 sets of rollers

I have the derestricted boss, cut cdi,5.5gr rollers, race variator, iridium plug and only 1700 km on my agility and on the flats my speedo only shows 42 mph on my best days and most times have a hard time reaching 40. I've been on this forum for a year now trying to get advice but nothing I do wont gain me any more speed. I never tried changing the torque spring and I don't think the belt should be worn yet. I just got my bike license so when I get money I'll be getting an agility 125,shame tho because all I really need is about 45-50 mph and I would be just fine. I stressed over this too long and I'm just trying to help anyone else from stressing too much,if you crave speed move up to a bigger bike. Good luck and I'll be seeing you around the forums.

Dale i take it you did the check with the magic marker on the variator to make sure your belt is long enough to hit the top of the variator? If its a multivar you fitted then i think they can use a longer belt and If the belt is too short you wil never get the full speed out of it. Guess you probably tried it already tho? Also did you recently check your valve gaps? Are you 100% sure you def severed the wire in the cdi? I know i had to file it down pretty far to hit my wire before i could cut it and it was to the r/h side not in the centre where i 1st cut. Also i take it you fitted an 82 main jet too?

I know some folk tell stories about their top speed but i can honestly say i always get 45mph or around 75km/h, at least, sometimes more on the flats every day i ride. If its windy i get held back to nearer 40mph. Where i live is a mix of flats and hills and the set-up i have is best for me, i tried loads of variations but this is the best i can get. I did hit the 50mph on the speedo a few times downhill tho, on heavier rollers, but it lost too much speed uphill and took ages to get top speeed unless going down a slope so i went lighter again.

Almost every A50 owner on here can hit 45mph after a proper de-restrict so maybe you missed something, or you just live in a area with more gradients? Or are you a big dude? Im only 11.5-12 stone.  Seems strange?

I got no reason to lie about my speed, it makes no difference to me if people believe it or not, im happy and thats all that matters. Dont really see any poit in making up stories and if i did i would make it a real good one. Did i tell you i once jumped 20 buses and landed on my front wheel while riding one-handed and playing a trumpet?  ;D

Seriously tho, maybe need to start up a poll to ask all A50 owners what speed they all get on a de-restricted A50? Be good to compare and see what the average is, bet its at least 45mph tho.

yeah, there is no reson to lie about top speeds. We are not fishermans  ;D

So:

standard 50cc engine
cdi cut
#84 jet
cr7hix ngk iridium
air box modification
racing carb intake manifold
malossi multivar kit(smooth drive boss ofcourse)
7 gr rollers (for this tes only), 5.5 gr for everyday use
748 mm malossi kevlar
quality full synth engine and transmission oil

I tested it an hour ago and got me to 57 mph gps on a 3% downhill

it's my max top speed for now.
got it downhill but on flats it's going to the end of the scale (80 kph)

Dale, check your spark plug gap as well, it should be between .025" and .027" or .635 mm and .658 mm.  Scoot will run fine if gapped higher, but there will be a severe loss in power.
