Title: removing the gas tank

whats the best way to remove gas tank to get to the air filter?

Chainsaw or with a sledge hammer. 

May have an issue getting it back on though.

Remove the right and left side covers and the right and left decorative covers under the fuel tank.
Remove the rear seat.
Remove the rear seat lock bolt and remove the front seat.
Remove the auto fuel valve.
Disconnect the fuel tube and remove the bolt on the end of the fuel tank.
Disconnect the fuel unit wire connector and fuel gauge wire.
Remove the fuel tank.

FUEL TANK INSTALLATION Install the fuel tank in the reverse order of removal.
Check that there is no fuel leakage.
Check the wire connectors for proper connection.

when you say auto fuel valve is that the same as the petcock? the metal nipple under the fuel tank?

Bring the bike to me in Austin and I'll remove the tank while you video.   ;)  The instructions are straight from the shop manual, which is why I put a link to it at the bottom of the post.

Yeah... I should do that next round of maintenance too...

A friend of mine once took apart his car brakes without knowing what he was doing...so he took a photo everytime he took something off, went to the photolab to develop the film (remember that stuff??) and then did it in reverse according to photos.  Might be waaaay easier to do now with digital.
