Is the word "rally" really a euphemism for the term "road race"?

Yes.  It's been said before and I'll say it again -- anytime two or more riders ride together, sooner or later it turns into a race!  Even if only a mild one. :D   

Thanks for sharing this stuff.  I especially enjoy the land speed record stuff.
