Friends,
I noticed a little leakage coming from under the water pump (telltale hole). It only does this after 30 seconds or so.
I only have about 8000 miles on the Xciting and already the waterpump is broken?
The coolant is of high quality.
Any wisdom on this?

I've had oil leakage and engine casing replacement at 7.000 kms so consider yourself lucky.

Mine on my '07 started leaking at about 4500 miles so I ordered a new pump. Then the old one quit leaking and stayed dry for a couple thousand miles so I left it in place. When it started again, I replaced it and flushed the whole system very well with distilled water.
I don't know for sure why it failed. It never leaked terribly badly -- I would have to add coolant to the overflow tank once or twice a week toward the end.
The strange part of the story is: The new one leaked for 20 miles or so, then became ok and has been ok for 5500 miles.
You could just wait a while and watch it.
My new pump cost around $55 or $60 dollars.

Mister Kymco, hope you are reading all this, because it surely is bad publicity...
On the left side there is the wailing sound from the clutch-cover and on the right the chirping sound from the waterpump!

I'll be damned!!! my waterpump is leaking aswell...FRESH COOLANT! read this a few weeks ago, didn't think anyhing about. Went to change oil and....leaking coolant! Just great! must re-read warranty coverage. Knowing my dealer they will find away to try to get out... :(

hmmm! Will check on mine too. But after 25,000 plus kms never had to top up the reservior. even after it overheated. I change the coolant every 10,000kms.

Hey, sjb9989, I hope you used coolant without silicates. The service manual says coolants with silicates will cause premature water pump failure. If this is your problem, you may yet save it by draining, flushing and refilling with the proper coolant.

I noticed mine leaking a short time after buying the bike. It had about 6,000 miles at the time and had been sitting with very little use for some time. Now that I am riding it regularly, it has stopped leaking, not a drop for over a month. My best guess is the pump seals dry up or somehow shrink a bit from sitting. Riding it regularly seems to keep them fresh.
To those who are experiencing the leak, how much are you riding your scoot? This might be a good excuse to go out and put some more miles on it! :)

I only drive it about once or twice a week but it can stand for 2weeks at a time.........................I shall keep a eye on it!!

Oh sorry to hear that! At least it is easy to get at.

Well, you have to buy a repair kit, take off the exhaust, do the repair, then take of the front chassis and change the cooling fluid. I'ts about a half day's work for a DIY.
I hope the engine didin't overheat...
I'm not pleased with this at all. Water and oil is the basis of any combustion engine and it should be engineered to be flawless. Of course any engine needs regular maintenance but lubrification and cooling need to be solid and should not break down this way after 10.000 miles.

The whole procedure took me 7 hours:
Exhaust, changing all the pieces in the waterpump, front chassis, new coolant
and putting it all back together again :-\
Will test-ride it this weekend.

I hope all is well now. Hope you used antifreeze with no silicates! When I replaced my water pump I probably spent at least as much time as you and perhaps more.
When I was putting the new coolant in I spent a great amount of time flushing the old coolant out first. I would fill the system with distilled water, then run engine up to operating temp -- shut off and drain. I did this over and over -- at least 5 times because I wanted to get all the old coolant out for sure! I even took off some of the cooling hoses under the engine and drained there.
Finally, when putting the new coolant in I would fill, then run engine and watch the fluid level in the radiator go down as the thermostat opened and would slowly pour more coolant in. Then let engine cool and go through the procedure again -- several times. This was to get all the air out of the system. I've been free of any problems ever since.
Just one thing, though. My new water pump curiously leaked for about the first 20 miles. After a few warm-up/cool-down cycles it stopped leaking and has been fine ever since.

You Know....Mine leaked once, about a teaspoonful. I just tightened
the hose clamps and haven't had any more issues. Yes these bikes
do well. But when you're always running close to the redline, it's sure to be
harder on a smaller engine rather than an automobile engine.

Take some comfort in the fact that the same thing happened with mine, though if you read my post you see it stopped leaking after a short time and has been good for thousands of miles since.

Thanks Hoolander. Let's hope for that. I can't wait too long however. Couldn't risk having any liquid flowing in the engine....

There's not much chance liquid would get in the engine. The seal that keeps it out is a different one than the ones that keep the pump from leaking. Besides, as you prob already know, the pump is designed to leak to the outside if at all.

That I don't know. Sorry not a true expert here. ;) I purchased a whole new pump so didn't have to mess around with the seals. I did put some assembly lube on the oil seal when installing the pump. But as long as no oil is coming out you're ok.

Part number: 19200 is waterpump assembly. About $60.
I order my parts online usually because I live so far from my dealer. But Stadium Yamaha usually has to order the parts from Taiwan just like your dealer would. If you live close to your dealer, and trust them, it'd be just as well to have him or her order them.
