Title: Tire valve replacement without tire removal
Post by: Ruffus on October 25, 2026, 05:16:39 PM
As titled a tire valve on a MotoGuzzi was leaking (not that much but 1bar in a fourthnight) and had to be replaced.
With bubblesoap and moving valve it opened a slit which couldn't be tolerated.
Naturally Friday evening, Saturday/Sunday tire shops not open, Monday holiday.
Not to botch my colleagues three day trip, etc...

Goes like this:
A)- valve (mechanical part) out
- airless tire now
- cut valves rubber part close to the rim
- lubricate the hook (pls see pics)
- push the hook through remaining rubber part
- wiggle and pull rubber part out

B) - clean rims valve area thoroughly!

C) - screw the new valve onto "push-rod" (the one with this petal handle)
- put push-rod and valve into conical tube
- set conical tube exact onto rims valve hole
- push rod with new valve into rims valve hole
- unscrew push rod from valve
- fill tire accordingly
- check valve seating/success with bubblesoap

It helps to remove the wheel, but goes easily on mounted wheel too.
Lubricate valve, hole, tube a bit with silicone spray or grease.
There are different lenghts of valve bodies available, TR 412, 413, 414 which indicates the stems lenght, diameter (rim hole 12mm) is always the same.
All three variants can be used, looks only more or less out of the rim.

Pretty cool Ruffus!

I needed a solution to a torn valve stem.
Ordered a set of these. Worked a treat, and really all you need is a pair of pliers (look in your scooter tool kit!) and a way to add air.
"COLBY" tire valves. Lots of youtubes.
I installed one a couple of years ago - and it doesn't leak!
I carry one as a spare in both scoots.
