Title: roller weights
Post by: luc1992 on January 20, 2011, 06:11:29 PM
Hello again,
If my people is downshifting too early (therefore getting a very unequal powerband, I.E lots of power from 0 to 20 mph, no power from 20 to 30 and than power again from 30 to 45) does this mean my rollers are too heavy or too light. And also, can you guys recommend what weight I should pick, I have a KN filter and a tecnigas exhaust. The weights provided with the exhaust are better than the stock weights but still don't feel optimal.
Thanks.
P.S this was posted from my phone, so forgive any typos!

Sounds like your weights are too heavy and/or your contra spring too light.  Not sure on the optimum weight, every machine is different.  You just have to play around with different set-ups.

I had the same problem with my People 50 in the 10-20mph range.  I replaced the clutch springs with a red (2000rpm) contra spring, and yellow (1500rpm) little springs.  This is what was already in there (presumably installed by the previous owner), so it seemed to be a good place to start.  The old springs were noticeably compressed compared to the new ones.

My scooter now accelerates very smoothly without power loss between 10-20mph, but I lost about 5mph off my top speed.  I have 7gm roller weights in my variator right now, and at some point I'll be experimenting with different ones to see if I can gain back some speed.

ok thanks, seems like the contra springs have more of an effect than i thought.

You should gain your speed back by changing the rollers.......Or you could change back to a 1000 contra

As far as the wieght, i'm not totally sure... the cobra uses 8.5 oem rollers.(same engine)
A set of digies is good to have arouond... ;)  :D... all the sizes are 16*13mm.. Its best to get a roller tuning kit, this will help you dial it in to get the correct weight you'll want in the end
