Title: How many 2nd chances would you give an unreliable scooter?

One.

I'd fix the problem - but if one more issue left me on the side of the road.
Bingo! Scooter would be sold.....maybe fixed, and sold!

My every ride for years now, starts in the dark of early morning. I ride into the countryside. I ride in all temps and weather - on  everything but ice or snow on the road.

Stig - I know I am fortunate to be able to replace any faulty scooter with a new one. I understand that not every rider can do that.

As you've alluded to, I think it's circumstantial. Me in my 20s persevered with whatever hunk of junk I was riding until the wheels pretty much fell off. Now in my mid-late 30s, I'd probably feel differently. That said, I don't rely on my bike for anything in particular, and the one I've had for 3 or so years now (Suzuki 250) has been the absolute pinnacle of reliability.

I suspect I'd change it in if it broke down more than twice in a month...

since my 3 bikes are 42, 30 and 12 years old...I used to assume at least one would be inoperable at any moment...but this year all 3 have been working perfectly. If one goes down I'd fix it rather than replace it...but I also don't usually ride out in the boonies in the dark.

unavoidable when you live in the boonies

I pushed my V-Strom 1000 about a mile in the dark one of the times when my charging system failed, woke my son up at 2am parked my bike in his garage and he gave me a ride the rest of the way home

Never had to make that call with a bike or scooter Stig.  Nearest I came was stranded on an Autostrada in N Italy by my then 3 year-old Triumph Daytona, but once fixed (new ECU) it then ran like a Swiss clock for the next 17 years!  Only let down by punctures on scooters bar the two CVT failures on my X-Town 300 which I immediately dropped in favour of the DTX.

If I was regularly doing your trips, I think one failure would destroy my confidence in the scoot!
