I went for a late night ride last night. Traveling at about 60 mph I met a possum not a fun experince since they are blind. I slammed on my brakes hard, hoping that they did not lock up. Yet again I am pleased with my bike. Glad I did not hit the possum because I may not have been here posting this today.

Glad the event turned out OK for you, but I have a different take. Any small animal in my path gets run over, period. Swerving or braking in excess could lead to disasterous results as you rightly feared. I've hit a couple of dogs and a squirrel that came out after me with no ill effects to me. With the animals it was another matter. Now a large dog or a deer is different, but if it's small, and it's gonna be me or them, it'll be them. I'd like to hear others thoughts on this. (Wasn't long ago I read a lady with kids in the car swerved to avoid a dog and hit a pole. Screw the dog!)

I know a guy riding a motorcycle was running 65 mph and hit a skunk and the impact almost killed the guy he is paralyzed from the waist down

I am as much animal lover as one can get, but I agree with you.
However, sometimes it is hard to suppress "slam the brakes" instinct...
