Title: Tach reading max after battery change

I replaced the battery in my '08 Xciting 500 and now the tach reads maximum. Tried tapping on the glass, disconnected the battery and reconnected. Tried reving it up while on center stand but nothing happens. Any suggestions???

yes, one newbie here giving advice to another. I am sure I am more of a 'newbie' than you. It seems like if the tach is the typical analog type you might try using a magnet to bring the needle back to 0. If yours is digital I have no thoughts. the analog tach's and speedo's in many vehicles use voltage  fluctuations to move the needle by induction. makes me think that maybe there is a damping system that is stuck. the damper takes the bounce out of sudden voltage fluctuations. try a magnet, it can't hurt. an old speaker magnet may be needed if a smaller one won't. sorry, that is all I got. good luck.

Thanx sparko. Tried the magnet, didn't work. Been reading my shop service manual, hope I don't have to remove instrument module. Maybe I will get to ride it today and hopefully that will shake it loose!

Turn ignition off
Disconnect negative battery terminal
Turn ignition switch on
Hold negative cable to negative battery terminal
Gauges should reset to normal
Remove negative cable from battery
Turn ignition off
Reconnect the negative
Turn it on and get some miles on the clock :)

Thanx Partsguy. Tried but still stuck. Would like to put some time on the clock but toooo cold. Guess I'm just turning into a fair weather biker.  :-\

If you try to wipe clean an analog meter, you could create a static charge that could peg your gauge one way or the other. Wipeing on some of that laundry anti-cling stuff (can't think of a name) would fix it, if that's the problem.

Tried it still peged all the way to the right.. Looks like the pointer is stuck against the speedo. Right now it looks like pulling the inst. cluster is my only solution. Still too cold to spend a lot of time in the garage.  >:(

Finally warm enough for a ride today. I guess that's all the scoot wanted. Tach back to normal after less than 1/4 mile. WHEW!! Thanx to those that replied with suggestions.
