Title: 550 coolant leaks due to the extreme cold
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on February 25, 2023, 01:20:00 AM
Fellow in Minnesota reporting that his dealer advised the coolant leaking from his 550 is due to the extreme cold, expanding and contracting metals. It has been -12°F to -15°F in his garage.

That's why those early VW's were aircooled :)

That makes sense.

Solution: keep your 550 parked in a garage that is warmer than -12F.  ;)

The coldest I've ever seen my garage get to was maybe as low as -3F. And that was when the temp outside was -15F to -20F. The coldest temp this winter was around -11F outside I think and the garage stayed above +15F.

-12!? Wouldn’t that freeze yer beers?  Don’t think my (integral) garage ever gets below 3C thankfully.

Horse hockey! That's what the Colonel called it when faced with a monumental pile from anyone!
