Title: rode my buddy's new Harley iron 883 (sporty) yesterday
Post by: Iahawk on December 31, 2022, 04:29:06 PM
My one buddy who rides (and just started) bought a new Honda Rebel 300 in May. He did what many do and rode his first bike for a few months and began planning for an upgrade. For Christmas he traded on a new Harley 883 sportster.

I stopped by his place yesterday to take a look at the bike. I must say it was pretty cool. Low seat, blacked out and the throaty rumble from the (factory!) pipes. I wasn't planning to ride it but he wouldn't take no for an answer, even though I had no gear at all (helmet, gloves, etc.). It was a balmy 30 degrees F but I took it for a quick spin. Just a few blocks out and back.

The pure mechanical noise and vibration was really cool. This is about as basic as a machine gets. It was really fun on my brief ride. I can't wait to spend some more time on the bike this Spring when the weather is nicer. I never imagined I'd be so excited about riding a Harley!

pic of similar bike attached.

Man that bike looks heavy - but I guess that is the look they were after. Masculine.
Must admit HD's do little for me.
But....I loved watching Then Came Bronson on TV.....and also for the sound it made - it wasn't stupid loud.

Years ago I was very impressed by a Sportster which I saw at a gas station. Had the Bronson shaped small tank - in metallic blue. It was gorgeous, chrome and that deep blue color! Have never forgotten that bike!

You may remember that a former member here who rode his LIKE200i up down the PCH - sold it and bought an HD!

Man that bike looks heavy

I think it's more than twice as heavy as our scoots...and you can really feel the weight just moving it off the kickstand, plus the weight is higher up. I was never a Harley fan but I'm starting to appreciate them a lot more for what they are. I have to separate the typical (stereotypical?) Harley 'rider' from the Harley bike.

Who knows...maybe someday...

I bought one back in 2015. The suspension, or the lack of, on anything but the smoothest of roads will bring pain. But you can buy longer shocks.  I kept it about a year.
