Title: New battery needed
Post by: CROSSBOLT on September 12, 2022, 06:20:59 PM
The cheapo Chrome battery began its death groan yesyerday while running honey-do errands. Not bad really since it was installed in 2018 to replace the dealer white label that was in the new-old stock 2013 Dowuntown 300i bought to replace the one stolen and wrecked. The battery wasn't the only part robbed by the dealer! Took hours to get everything replaced.

This time I'm going Yuasa. Major Tom has had one for 8 years as I recall making it cheaper than two Chromes by a couple of bucks. The only question is where to get? Batteries Plus is out of the question locally since they are in a yuppie location with prices to match.

I've trusted revzilla to sell me fresh YUASA batteries. ....for the Forza, the Burgman, the LIKE and the Liberty.
I don't know your battery dimensions...but I like to find the most CCA's, etc. for only a couple bucks more in the same size battery case.
The LIKE came stock with 8Ah and 9Ah batteries - I measured my battery - looked at the YUASA charts and dropped a 14Ah YUASA in the box, needing only to trim 5mm off the 2 hold-down posts on the underside of the battery box lid. The 14Ah was the same size - just 5mm taller.

I don't use a "Model guide" to find my battery - just take measurements....and go!

I see one for 84.97 on Amazon. Batteries have gotten more expensive! I also think Revzilla will price match, if necessary.

Got curious to what the motorcycle guys over at ADVrider.com were saying....so cribbed this post from a guy in Washington state:

https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/yuasa-they-dont-make-em-like-they-used-to.1325540/#post-35451469

My first motorcycle was a Honda in 1960 and the OEM battery was a Yuasa. Put over 20000 miles on that gutless wonder and it still had the same battery when I traded it for a SAAB GT-750 rally sedan when I bailed out of engineering school. The ADVrider guys claim the Yuasa's are great out of Japan but suck from US. Yuasa's on Amazon all say Taiwan in the product pictures.

The consensus seemed to be Motobatt so I got one of them coming from Amazon for about 80 bucks. Will advise if it even fits....

The Yuasa YTX9-BS and Motobatt MBTX9U will fit perfectly and work reliably for years. Unless the voltage regulator goes bad and the battery stops charging.

@CROSSBOLT, BTW how did your experiment with capacitors come out?
Because I would need for a conversion project a very flat starter battery to be put into the racers seat cushion.
This pictured V35C should be converted into something like the yellow one.

Glad you mentioned that! The starting performance on the UXV500i has been superb with those capacitors!. I have not charged that battery since installing the cap bank and it has started every time.

Txs so much, I will put some of them together and try to built a flat unit to fit somehow in this seat.

The great thing about a super cap "battery" is they are absolutely DRY, nothing to leak out ever. Any position, out of the way, they just sit and wait to do the job!

Biggest thing is to encase them permanently to keep the dirt off.....

@CROSSBOLT, txs again.
But I checked some main brands  like MAXWELL , and upon their specifications decided for LiFePo4 accus.
Perfomance and price gave the way to them. Clients will not pay €650,- for a 12.7V sixpiece 500 Fa pack.
Mayby in the future, if companies want to follow this and they get less expensive.

650?! I may be misunderstanding but I paid about 25 USD for 6 Maxwells which in serirs gave something like 83 farads. That seemed the likely combination for starting car engines on youtube.

Yes, but I have to quarantee for all stuff implanted.

What does that mean? Does it mean if you put this in someone's bike that you personally must guarantee it? I will go along with that. But why on earth such huge farads and huge-er price? These caps are about the size of a "D" dry cell and 500 F is about all you gonna get

It WILL be 3000 F if wired in parallel which won't work because they will only tolerate 2.7 volts and burn up or out or both if subjected to 12 to 14.6 volts.

@CROSSBOLT, not if you put this in someones bike but if I put an item as a "company" in it.

Here this restyled bikes are considered as new constructed an you have to pass a thorough technical approvement to get it streetlegal.

So I am first hand responsible for any tech fault and after that product quarantee sets in.
For that reason taking pre-manufactured products reduces legal flaws.

Just to squench my own curiosity I will go the way shown in this pic.
For experimental reasons and to be used in my own vehicle only.

There ya go! VERY nice job! You definitely ahead of me! Youneven have the BMS or BPS on all caps. BMS = Battery Maintenance System; BPS = B Protection S. For capacitors instead of batteries....

It is in and it works beautifully! Starts in one revolution! The standard is two revolutions with a fresh OEM battery or a fresh Chrome replacement but THIS started it in ONE REVOLUTION!

It remains to be seen if this keeps up for months or years. However, the initial observation is very different and encouraging.

Anuone know where these Motobatts are made?
