In Alaska I found this 16 Kymco 450i blue in color
Owner claims only 297 miles but now I noticed the odometer does not work or maybe I don’t have it programmed correctly.
Randomly the engine shuts off, display is not effected and it turns over instantly upon key turn. It can happen as little as five minutes or after a warm up and mile run. It has never happened during motion but it has upon stop/slow 1mph . Any tips would help please!!
I did get it to run non stop for about 45 minutes but then I noticed antifreeze spilling from the overflow tube. The plastic reservoir was Luke warm and the AF was bubble and trouble 👿. When I got this utv yesterday I vaguely recall the AF being filled above the max indicated line. I’m hoping this was just a case of too much and the radiator could not properly move it. After it cooled the reservoir was bone dry so I went to Walmart got some ethylene based AF and refilled the unit. Allowed her to warm for 15 and then went for a mile run. I did not see anymore bubbles and the radiator was hot to the touch but not scolding.
What I have done so far maintenance wise:
Changed spark plug new iridium
Emptied old gas and added new 87 unleaded gas
Topped off engine oil, purple royal 5-30 .5q
Cleaned air filter
Needed to do
Test battery voltage
Change engine oil
Change front rear differential
Check valve
Adjust carb (old plug was black wet but later had a white tip)
Clean carb
Clean oil filter
Clean fuel ?? filter

450 "i"....
So this is electronic fuel injection....no carb to adjust or clean?

How is your fan operating?
Yes, welcome to this forum!

So confusing lol no carb! The area where the spark plug goes into looks alot like a traditional mikuni carb
Well how do i adjust the Idle or the fuel mixture.
I will check the battery tonight.
-
What is a reliable source for parts? Google has limited sites, it seems ebay might be the most diverse and correct.
Is this the stock engine fan? https://www.powersportsid.com/arrowhead/custom-cooling-fan-motor-assembly-mpn-rfm0003.html?singleid=3770234213#product-details

On electronic fuel injection (EFI, AFI) you DON'T! You can take apart and clean but you must NOT adjust throttle stop. There is nothing else to adjust except maybe the position of the MAP sensor!

I got into the battery compartment and checked the fuses, the Fans fuse had blown 15a. I replaced it with a new one and checked the rest.
Started it up and ran for two miles, the fan is still not turning on but the grill is not overly hot, i can hold my hand on it for more than ten seconds comfortably and its about 35F outside
When can i expect the fan to turn on? My other Yamaha atv 2020 kodiak 450 the fan turns on within a few minutes of idle normally.

My UXV500i seems to run forever before the fan turns on. When pulling a mower deck in hot, HOT summer it would cycle on and off regularly but just running about nearly never.

okay thanks! Ill keep an eye on the levels as i start to push it further.
I sprayed some silicone lubricant into the shifter assembly, it seemed to help with the sticky feeling.

As long as your moving at speed the fan rarely comes on, when plowing snow at very low speeds it does come on frequently. These small radiators can easily get packed with mud so be sure the radiator fins are cleaned out. I just use a good stream from my garden hose to flush after riding in extreme dust or mud. Yes, do change the diff fluids, I use full synthetic 75/140 diff lube. Mine also has a tendency to stall until completely warmed up, but can also stall if overheated !! With the current world issues shipping from Tiawan can be iffy at best. Not a lot of stocking dealers out there but there are some that will ship.. I have a 2015 450i and it has been an awesome machine, very few spare parts have been needed. If your speedo is not working, try pulling the speed sensor and cleaning it and the electrical connection to it. They are also known to go haywire and need replaced. About 50 bucks to replace mine. Right down there next to the oil fill and dipstick, one bolt to remove and pull sensor out. Good luck with your machine, hope it serves you as well as mine has served me!!

I pulled the oil plug from under the body today, and it was black as night and I found a 1mm gray rubber seal torn in half floating in the oil drip pan. That did not inspire alot of confidence. So i went back to walmart got some Mystery engine oil cleaner/fuel cleaner and flushed the engine with it open then added about 300ml with the new oil. Replaced the oil filter also.
It feels like the acceleration is smoother now but it still stalled after a mile run and sitting idle for a minute. I checked the battery and it says 12.6 so maybe get a new one
Should the fuel pump unit or whatever attached to the gas tank be hot? it was pretty damn hot after the mile drive and it was 30F tonight.
How difficult is it to pull the gas tank? I wouldnt mind getting in there and making sure that bitch is sparkling clean.

You should get a service manual thru " Cyclepedia" either the nline or hard copy version, this will show you all that tou are asking for. A must if your going to keep your machine! Fuel pump is an inline unit, by the passenger side under seat. Get some good clean synthetic oil in her, that will make a big difference, same for the diffs....
-
I got the cyclepedia on amazon for kindle it was 9.99$ and goddamn 1500 pages of photos and examples. I would have never found the drain plug on the front diff. without it.
I drained the rear and front diff, the rear diff was very chocolate milk/mud looking which does not instill confidence in the splines integrity. Flushed it out with a mixture of oil and mystery engine cleaner until it was the same color as stock diff oil.
The front diff was not as chocolate, more like new fluid but still dirty.
When I started her up she went the whole 20 minutes without stalling and did not stall tonight so far after about a 2 mile run. During the second half of the run i heard some strange noises and vibrations from under the seat and back behind me. Im not sure if it was the road I was on or something inside my cab/storage but it sounded pretty bad and was noticable at low mph and rpms. It eventually went away and I went the other 1 mile without any more odd sounds. Maybe it was just cleaning out some old build up in the engine or diffs. I will flush them and replace fluids one more time before saying shes 'Trail ready'.

Just a couple ideas for you...the rear brakes are known to make noise when they get dirty, that single disc easily traps debris and makes awefull noises but flushing with a garden hose usually stops it, for a short while!! There is a steel plate that acts as a heat diffuser under the bed, that can also rattle or collect stones and other debris that rattles. Look carefully at the vent hoses comming off the diffs, they are rubber and can crack, which can allow water inside the diffs. Justbthrowing out some littlevthings that I have experienced with my machine and what others have mentioned....

Can you send me a photo or show me where those bleed hoses are? I didnt notice anything but a tiny little black cap on the rear diff that i unplugged and plugged again
-
Being newer yours may be different, on my 2015 there is a small dia rubber hose comming off the top of the diff housing that acts as a vent. Mine cracked right where it connected to the diff housing, noticed it was cracked when changing the diff fluid. Check you manual to see what it shows. When I get vack out to the varn I will try to get a pic. Wife just had major back surgery so I am not getting out there very often.

I hope your wife gets healthy soon, I feel better now knowing I am not the only one that fat fibgers the keyvord
I just had a couple procedures myself, nothing major, replacing a battery in a neurostimulator turned into replacing the unit and lead, and the lead a second time (my ass is sore) but it's kept me out of my barn too. I did discover, the narrow seat of my K-Pipe is comfortable to ride. My 450i still has the plow on it
-
Yea....damn little buttons and very fat fingers, no matter how many tines I proof read, my fingers fall over each other !!! Arthritus doesnt help either....

I checked my Fan fuse again today, blown!
I have a feeling the fan is never going to work until I get this blowing fuse problem. I dont want it to overheat eventhough we are only in the 50s in alaska currently.
-
See if the fan turns freely, sometimes crap build up and restricts the fan and that can blow a fuse. Check the wires at the fuse block my became filled with mud and water and corroded everything which blew fuses. After sittting overnight the battery should read 12.6 volts or higher to be full. Unless your using a lot of fuel, I would keep some fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank, with todays poor quality fuels, I wouldnt take the chance of getting crap in your fuel. Keep us posted on how your gettin along!!

I get pine needles caught in everything, and there a bugger to get out
-
Yes they are, while I dont have many around home, when we ride p in N Mich, that area i full of pine trees and those needles wind up in places you would never think. Found a hand full in my closed glovebox and stuffed between aeat back and bottom, poking me in the ass!!
-
I pulled each fuse from the Relay under the driver side hood. About half were caked on the outside with mud/dry dirt and half were dirty on the insides. Sprayed them down with QD Electronic spray and some dielectric grease after cleaned up.
Got out the ryobi washer and hit the fan grill and made the fan spin with the waters force.
Put a new fuse 10A in the fuse tray next to battery and went for a few miles.
No burned fuse yet.
She was hot enough but still no fan action, I dont want it to boil over again and possibly kill my new used toy. How can I test if the fan itself works on alternate power source or by hot wiring it, please be like Electricans for dummys type of explanation cause I am stupid and dont understand most of what Im trying to diagnose/repair.

Find and check the inline EMI filter in the fan circuit anf the ground.

Im sorry what? procedural wise how and what to check for, debris or a voltage. I have the service manual, but even that is vague.

I only SUSPECT yours has one since the DT300i and the UXV500i have one. An EMI filter is stuck in the circuit to the fan motor to "smooth out" the disturbances to the power source by the motor running. Electro Magnetic Interferance (EMI) can upset the operation of the ECU or so the design twidgets think. The one on my UXV500i failed open circuit one summer while towing a mower deck cutting a field of grass. Temp light came on and I realized the fan was not running.
What to do? Up the hood and look! Wires from the fan ran into a cube that said "EMI FILTER" and the plugs for this thing were made to be plugged into each other without the filter in the circuit! That is the way they are today, years later and the fan operates properly. You may have the same problem....
-
Not an electrical wiz, but on my machine there is a plug under the fan on the backside of the radiator. Pull front tires to reach it, you might be able to jump there to see if the fan is good. I do know there is a thermal switch to make the fan come on but you will need the wire dia to find its location.

Thank you Airshot and crossbolt for the replys,
I will check that area and see what i can find, i was able to find some replacement emi filter online in the states for like 40$ I might just purchase that.
Or, I was on a hilly billy fix dream last night, what if I remove the old fan, and replace it with some 140mm PC Fans, like 3x3 in a square grid that runs off the UXV's battery and I toggle a switch whenever I feel it might be warm.
In alaska there is literally nobody who services these and I could pay a local guy to take a look but our riding seasons are so short i cant justify even a few days down haha. So im hoping the EMI filter looks really bad and i replace it, or i might go down the hilly billy fix road.
-
Lots of folks just add a switch and turn on the fan when riding slow. Simple, quick and easy....but if your anything like me it bugs you that it doesnt work like it is supposed to!!! I would have to figure it out. Before replacing your fan see if it actually works first...I was out spraying weed killer with my 450i, the sprayer hold 30 gallons plus spray equipment, going very slow, less than 5 mph and frequently stopping to hand spray areas with a wand. It was almost 90 degrees here, fan kicked on a few times but as soon as the machine moved along the fan stopped !! My point is dont expect your fan to come on very often..when I trail in the woods it rarely comes on unless I am crawling along at walking speed. By all means get the fan checked to be sure it does work !!!

What I am saying is IF the filter is bad and is keeping the fan from running, the plugs may be made to bypass the filter.
We did a switch for a neighbor's Honda 4-wheeler. This neighbor is a farmer and he WORKS that 4-wheeler! The nearest dealer had the thing for a month and could not find the cause so they wrote up a spark plug change just to bill him and get him out of the shop. Did not fix his problem and he needed it so we rigged him a switch, bypassing everything. Straight from the battery with its own fuse. Keeps it from overheating at slow speeds like already mentioned.
-
Okay, unplugged the Fan and the connectors under the front left passengers glove box area. Cleaned with more QD electric spray and a lil electric grease.
Started her up and within about 8 minutes once i forgot about it the fan kicked on with furious roar, that little thing can move some air! Stuck my hand behind it, nice flow moving some warm air. Then it kicked off and came back again 15 minutes later, so I can probably call this thread FIXED.
Thanks yall! good to join you on this forum being new, hopefully i will grow some more and be able to help someone else someday.
