How do you know it overheated? What did it do when it overheated? How many hours/miles? What is coolant level in overflow jug and radiator? Can you smell antifreeze or see any leaks? What color is the antifreeze coolant?

He noticed right after it overheated oil was gone. Refilled and it’s been good since. Try’s to start but won’t. Says exhaust is warm ?

We need a starting point in trying to trouble shoot by remote control. Please answer some questions:
In addition to the ones already asked, what indicated overheating? Then how did he determine it was out of oil?
What does it mean it has been "good since refilling with oil" but it won't start?

i guess first trip out to mail box radiator boiled over, came back to shop, found no oil in machine, refilled oil but fails to start, slight backfire when trying to start

hmmm....I'm no engine expert, but this doesn't bode well for the machine..overheating plus no oil?  Was the machine new to him or has he had it for a while?

A compression check would be a good starting point. Take a look at the spark plug to see how roasted it is
