I'm an unintentional deer hunter - they seem to like running across the road just in front of my scooter.

2 deer hunters in the family here. Not going this year, due to other commitments.
Sitting on the deck having coffee this morning, listening to the gun shots in the surrounding woods though.
Have not had any close calls with the 4 legged critters myself. *knock on wood*

I hunt with a camera but a close call on my scoot would freak me out. We were broadsided by an Elk in Yellowstone. Just about totalled our truck, on a scooter? I probably wouldn't be talking right now. By the way witnesses say that the Bull Elk limped slightly away.

If you like it just for the meat and not for the hunt, you would love where I work..... (on a university owned farm) two days ago I was driving the loader in the field and a buck decided I was moving in on his woman (with the tractor I guess) and came between me and the doe...... he was about 15 feet from the tractor snorting at me.... I reveved (sp) the enigine tilted the bucket making loud noise and even drove towards it.... nothing just snort and kick its hoves..... this happens to me almost every year.... just this time I was protected well enough from getting attacked I felt like fighting back :P last year while mowing the fields.... a doe jumped out and was followed by 3 bucks..... and they would not let me leave.... just had to sit there and watch the fighting among them (cool yet scary)

If riding around the Hwy 17 area west of Wilmington, NC be extra careful watching for "Bambi." I'm working in this area right now and have never seen so much road kill deer. Many, many times more than my NE Georgia mountains or maybe our deer are smarter and stay in the woods.
Lots of scooters around the Wilmington area. Several colleges around here, and beach areas, good places to scoot around.

I am going on my 27th year of being a deer hunter.

I love animals and consider hunting for fun to be barbaric practice.
I also consider hunting to preserve natural balance (for example, in case of overpopulation by certain species like hares etc., or to prevent spread of diseases) to be justified.
On the other hand, I am a hypocrite, because I eat meat, Yet, I would not, under normal circumstances, kill any mammal.

Hunting's never appealed to me. Killing something that doesn't have the equal chance to kill you doesn't sound sporting. That's just me, but I don't hate or condemn hunters. If the hunter does hunt for food, and uses as much of the kill as possible - hide, antlers, meat, etc, I'm fine with that. Hell, have me over for dinner.
I don't agree about hunting to thin out a population as there's little chance of killing off the old, weak, or sick members of the herd, as predators tend to do. Killing off strong and vital members of a herd creates a dysfunctional imbalance.
Animals have as much right to exist as we do. Moving into an environment, razing it to build homes, business, etc, doesn't mean the displaced animal population simply vanishes. We're living in their ecosystem now. Some will leave and move into other human communities, others will stay.
Having deer run out onto the road is the inherent risk of living in deer rich environments. Believing that 'Man' is the only species that counts seems arrogant, as 'Man' does very little to keep this world alive. In many cases we do just the opposite.
I accept deer as much of a hazard of the road as I do, cars, truck, wet leaves, ice, and pot holes. It's dangerous out there. Be vigilant.

Damn near got a young one just now on the way home.
It ran out into the road from between some parked cars (yes, it was hanging out on the lawn of a townhouse development), spun around and ran back. It was dark and there was a fair amount of traffic and I didn't even see the thing until it was far into the road.
I think it was a female, because I instinctively yelled "D'oh!"

This topic was for deer hunters. Yes, I realize we have PETA and animal rights people. I am not going to feed into all the animal huggers by posting 2 times the reasons we need hunting for every comment to not needing to hunt the whitetail deer.
I will say I only take deer that are the following.
1) Mature male deer of 3 yrs and older.
2) A male deer with an uneven rack that means he has been in a fight from a previous year and could pass a bad gene on.
3) An injured deer that may have been shot with a rifle or an arrow from a previous season.
4) If none of the top 3 are taken in the first half of the season I will take a female in order to have meat in the freezer.
Deer hunting has always been in my family. I will say that all the deer I have taken been in a sportsman fashion with all deadly shots. I took 3 last year 2 of which were spinal neck shots with a .50 cal inline muzzle loader and the 3rd was a double lung shot which the deer had been shot by a previous hunter that day. All of these deer died instantly and no suffering occurred.
The deer is then taken to a meat processing shop and made into hamburger, roast and cut into strips for making jerky. I will give a lot to a friend of mine who has a family with 3 kids so this really helps out on there grocery bill. We also have Feed The Hungry here in TN which can be donated to the homeless shelters to feed homeless people, which HELPS us tax payers, and whos pocket does this come out of to pay for the processing? The hunters.
There are more solid strong points why we have a deer season here in the US and its controlled and regulated by the states Wildlife Resource Management.
So please all of you deer lovers, animal lovers that disagree with hunting I would suggest not reading the topic cause mostly it will make you sad to read our hunting stories.
Not all hunters are cruel and unsportsmanlike.
This could get heated and most likely the moderator will have to close this topic if it gets out of hand. Its one of these topics that both sides feel strongly on there beliefs.

I my self beleave in puting food on my table is ok. nothing wrong with hunting as long as you dont abuse it. when I go hunting I go for a full week if I dont get a buck after the 3 day I take a doe just to have meat on the table.but if its a small doe ill let it just walk on by. but at the same time if I dont someone well but Ill let theam be the bad guy and take it.

Hunting to feed the hungry is OK, but it also shows sad or almost non existing state of social affairs -> whole another topic.
Saying that "it is being done in my family" is just like claiming in criminal court that "incest runs in my family for centuries, so it must be OK".
Finally, this is a scooting forum and if you post about deer hunting in General Discussion section, you can expect that some people will be opposed to it.
Otherwise, apply your own advice and keep your macho killing spree self righteous stories also to yourself.

No, but I wouldn't mind hunting a wolf, closest I came to taking a wolf was a coyote last year during deer season. No, I didn't eat the coyote either.

Where do you go hunting at? Do you hunt all 3 seasons, Bow, Muzzleloader, and rifle? I really enjoy hunting with my .50 cal inline muzzleloader, nothing beats waiting on the the cloud of smoke to rise early in the morning after a shot has been made.

There are more civilized countries than ones where you or I live, and where animals have right very close to human rights.
Comparisons always have to be put into perspective of local legislation and local culture.

I am quite aware it is not possible to achieve consensus on this one. I have so called "hunters" in my family circle, where "hunting" is usually just an excuse for prolonged alcohol binges and I do not discuss that with them.
Whenever there is hunting season, a number of them kill each other thinking it s a bird or a rabbit.

OT: Massai religion states that all cows were given to them. But they do scratch them to drink their blood. Cows are an important property without any rights.
An extreme example would be (killing cow) in the context of the Hindu culture. Cows feeding the orphaned baby Lord Krishna (mythology) are sacrosant God's Mother.

Basically, I was referring to lack of supermarkets in the areas where Massai traditionally live as a justification for killing animals.

The deer are protected here in TN by law until deer season opens for archery season in September and ends in January.
There are so many deer here in TN that the daily limit is 3 doe a day every day starting September 25th until January 9th
Do the math, that's 285 deer I can take as one hunter, ooops add 3 buck to that. ;)

I love animals also. I know this sounds bizarre and ask yourself how could I shoot a deer if I love animals?
I was raised to respect nature and also to be a sportsman when hunting. I dont use a bow and arrow to take an animal IMO thats animal cruelity and today we have technology to take an animal in a respectful manner. I dont go deer hunting so I can go on a drinking party with my hunting buddies. IMO drinking alcohol / use of drugs in use with high powered weapons is dangerous! I know guys do it, but I dont care to hunt with those that do 0 tolerance on that.
You say that people killed animals to eat and survive and now we have grocery stores. Well back then we werent knocking down forest to build the new shopping mall, high dollar house, apartment complexes etc.
Deer arent like coyotes, meaning they only breed if they have the habitat and food source for multiplying. Deer breed every year having 1, 2 and even 3 offspring. If there were no deer season the deer would inbreed which would cause generic problems which would lead to diseases and they would suffer and die.
The average life of a deer is 5 years. Deer dont ever sleep, they rest, always under stress.
I said I wouldn't get into this type of discussion. I just want to make it clear that all people that hunt animals arent drunken wild red neck hillbillies with guns blowing up anything that moves. Some of us are sportsmans and enjoy being out in nature and enjoy the challenge of taking a whitetail deer.

What state do you hunt to where you have to use a shotgun? I remembered I hunted in NJ once, and was only allowed to use a shotgun so I took my 1187 out to the range and was highly disappointing.
I prefer to use my Optima 50 cal inline for deer hunting. Its a tack driver to 150yrds. 150 grains of powder pushing a 295grain hollow point out a rifled barrel traveling at 1750FPS. Great penetration and the bullet stays 85% intact on impact. In all honesty its more accurate then my 30-06 which I only use when I am hunting fields with shots up to 250 yards. 3 buck last year, 2 neck shots and 1 double lung with the inline all 3 dropped in there tracks.

Check out this lil guy, he came out to my stand 3 mornings in a row. He is a young button buck. He is going to be a big body deer when he grows up. I just enjoyed watching him eat acorns directly under my tree stand hoping that his grandfather would join him. :D

Yesterday I watched a documentary showing a woman that was arrested at an airport because she carried some liquid food for her diabetic mother that was with her in a wheelchair, while officers standing nearby where laughing. She had declared she had that food in a portable fridge.
There was also a 12 year old kid that was handcuffed and taken to the police because he gave to his friend 2 US$ worth of steak during lunch break in school (!!!!).
Under these conditions, my friend, and considering the power given to US President to produce "executive orders" at his/her own will, and without anybody`s approval, ban on gun ownership is just one executive order away.

There is a lot of money in all this.
In the last two years, my country has also undergone a quick "Americanization" course.
Now we also have agencies and lawyers specialized in (imaginary) personal injuries etc. :)
Btw. I have a question for you that is not hunting-related but it is wild animal&driving related.
If in your country a wild animal runs in front of your car and damages it after collision, and let`s suppose that you do not have full car insurance that will cover the cost but only third-party insurance, is somebody held liable, can you ask somebody about paying/covering the damages?
The same question for ts1, to check how are these situations managed in Germany.

Germany: Wild animals don't have liability insurance and no owner and don't pay for anything.
Cattle & pets have an owner and hopefully this one has an insurance.

Here there are hunters' associations that are "in charge" of all areas where wild animals reside.
They can hunt there, but have to take care of animals, ensure additional food for animals during winter, respect laws, educate new members and a number of other things.
There is pretty much detailed legislation following these things.
If a wild animal causes damage to your car, it is local hunters' association that is held liable: they need to have insurance against issues like that.
So, you will get compensation for incurred damages from them or their insurance.
I wonder how these things work in USA.

I have hit a deer with my car 2 years ago. I was traveling at 60 MPH and a doe ran out and I locked the brakes on my car and swerved to miss her, unfortunately a buck was hot on her trail and I couldn't avoid him. :'( The impact was around 50 MPH as my cars drivers side front took the impact to this deer.
The deer flew up over the hood and luckly DIDNT come through the windshield as I put my arm over my face thinking that he would, he then landed on the trunk lid of my car. I stopped to see if I had any liquid dripping from the impact and hoping the radiator wasn't busted on impact. Luckily no fluid leak I then walked back about 100 ft where the impact took place :::WARNING DETAILED INFORMATION:::: and the deer was still alive but not moving :'( I felt bad that for one he was suffering, and 2 I couldn't do anything to help or put him out of his misery. I didnt have my handgun on me since I was coming home from work or I would have taken away his suffering from internal injuries.
My insurance did cover the damage estimated at 3800.00 USD. Here in the USA you have 2 choices with insurance, just liability which only covers the other persons, personal injury and property damage or you can have premimum insurance called comprehension, fire, theft and collision. This type of insurance covers you and your property in an acccident if you are at fault such as reckless driving, hitting a deer, dumping your motorcycle, etc. anything of your fault.

This premium insurance exist here too: it covers everything except damages caused by drunk driving and intentional damages.
We call it "kasko" insurance: the same word exists in German language (Kasko Versicherung).
If you have only liability insurance and wildlife causes damage - local hunters have to restitute you for the damages. :)
p.s. It is close to impossible and financially not viable to have premium insurance for anything on two wheels as it is too expensive. Annually you have to pay approx. 10-20 % of the price of the new bike for full coverage. I have full coverage for my car: I pay around 700 US$ for liability insurance and additional 500 US$ for premium insurance: (total of 1200 US$ for insurance, 100 US$ luxury tax on cars and approx. 100 US$ technical inspection+road tax) / year. Price of the car is around 19.000 US$.

So are you limited to double 0 buckshot? Can you use an inline muzzleloader?

I can use a shotgun with a rifle barrel on it. or bird barrel or slug barrel. we can use slugs or buck shot.
the northen part of the state is open to what ever you wana use. but there are a few places that is state land that says you have to use a plug so you cant shot more then 3 times. that why I hunt private land to many grazzys out there. I remebr growing up when you could use a 22 rifle for hunting deer but now you cant they just dont have the power to kill if not hit right.

I have seen alot of does and young deer. The mating season
is behind this year which keeps the mature bucks bedded down
during the day. Its all in the moon phase and this week should get
them fired up.
Thats why they call it hunting and not killing you have to put your time in
and have patience. Enjoy the nature and the peace when your out and that
will help keep a positive attitude. ;) Good luck and be safe!

No deer for me yet Darn". But I did get some meat for helping others clean there deer because they didnt know how. so Im good for a while. I well work for food ----lol.

Deer hunting becomes more challenging when the deer arent in rut (mating season) when you see them in that mode you need to be in the woods as much as you can an hour before sunrise to 30 mins after sunset.
Weather isn't looking good for my hunt tomorrow, rain rain go away.

Same here, oswaldters! Hey, that one looks like it's heading straight for the trash can there. Deer in the yard is better than bear in the yard, though. Used to have a bear that would bite the head off of rabbits then leave the body in the yard.

It had left our lawn and gone across the street to go through their backyard and back into the woods.
The things are fearless - they just stand there and look at you.
I try to explain how the food chain works and our relative positions, but they never listen to me and just continue on with their business.

I think my dog thinks their her kin folks or something. She whines and tries get them to come closer as if they're actually going to play with her. I have to keep an eye on her outside. All it would take is for one of them big ones to step on her little head once and she'd be a goner.
Speaking of fearless...our neighborhood needs some squirrel hunters to come over this way. Those little buggers sit on the curb lookin' at ya just waiting for you to get close to them then run out in the road right in front of you.

Todays Deer Hunt Score. Deer 1 Hunter 0.
No deer today, wind was horrible 35MPH gust out of the South West. Ground hunted till 8AM and changed over to stalk hunting till about 2. The winds picked up which causes a hazzard in the woods so I let Mr Buck live another day. Temps are dropping after this front moves through. Looks like this weekend may be better. Getting far into the season.
Guess that's why they call it hunting. Deer are some amazing animals and there natural instincts of survival are incredible. I guess they are wearing camouflage also.
You can only run so long and so far before the LY Deer Hunter finds you!!
