I am considering getting a People 50 but I'm afraid I weigh too much for such a little engine. I would like to avoid getting anything bigger because you don't need a motorcycle endorsement for 50cc and under in CO. I weigh ~230 and I'm planning on just scooting to my office once a week. (I work from home, no sense paying tons of money for my VW GTI when I don't drive it) Any thoughts?
-
What is the route you would travel? Is it hilly? What's the general speed of surrounding traffic?
-
You are not too big for a people 50 , it would be one of the best 50cc scoots you could choose . Good luck .

..agreed..i weigh 220...and my people runs just fine!!!
..Welcome to th' Forum!!

And you're not fat - you're just big boned!
-
...i'm just solid...lol..
-
Your not fat your just under tall. I am 240 but 6ft 7 If I was 7ft10 I would be underweight and over tall? LOL! In my opinion that poor 50 will be hurting in Colorado assuming its Colorado I couldn't imagine a big person riding a 50CC scoot up the mountain to reach mile high. If you were out in the dessert on flats I think it would be ok, but still underpowered.
Buy a 150, and put 50CC emblems on it. Just dont go over 35MPH.
Its not that hard to get a motorcycle license. Go online study the manual schedule a date, take the test. get ya a scoot atleast a 150CC and you are going to be much happier.
IMO a big guy riding a 50CC scooter looks ..... Ohh I wont say it..
-

This is why we go for lighter roller weights.
-
..and stiffer clutch springs...
...cvt tuning will get you up the hills...
-
Yeah roller weights will help his acceleration but hurt his top end speed which a 50cc isnt much more then 30-35 stock with his weight.
Depends on the traffic he rides in, early in the morning where people are running late for work or women putting on makeup, etc. Not being able to go with the flow of traffic is dangerous, more dangerous then speeding. Now if he lived out in a rural area and was riding from a log cabin down the road to a farm to work maybe seeing 3 cars on a busy day this type and size of bike will be ok.
Going up any incline at 20-25mph in rush area traffic could be dangerous IMO.

..lankee...you ever tuned a 50cc 2-stroke scooter's cvt??
..i'm guessing the answer is NO!!!

Not sure about the weight issue - I come in about 155 so not sure how much those extra pounds cut the top end.
I'm still working on the roller weights - trying out the 5.5s right now.
I think the 5s are the way to go though - really made a big difference on those hills. I'm going to go with the Dr Pulley's when I finally settle on the weight.
How much difference do the clutch springs make?

What is your speed on your scooter at your weight?
Level ground=
Up a gradual hill=
Up a long steep hill=
-
Speed (as indicated - haven't done the GPS to see what the real speeds are)
Level ground= 60 kph
Up a gradual hill= 50 kph
Up a long steep hill= around 30 kph
-
..we need to mod your scoot, os..........
-
You got that right - that's why I'm starting to mess with stuff.
I should mention that the long steep hill has a stop sign at the bottom so I have to start from a dead stop.
...generally with a car right up my ass too.
Oh, I didn't mean 30 kph for the long steep uphill - I mean 30 mph - forgot to convert.

..i have a cpl of those in my commute...
..my guilty handled them fine...
..and the FRANKENGUILTY will tooo!!
-
That's why I need the free flow air filter and the bigger main jet....
-

..yeah, and an exhaust...
..but that's a damned good start!!
..just think...you'ld have a much shorter time of commute in the 25 degree weather...
;D
-
Shorter commute - higher windchill, what's not to like!
-
...dress accordingly bro...
..you'll be sweating by the time you get there...lol...
-
As long as I'm not swearing...
I can handle the cold - spent lots of years in Canada.

You are just big boned. :D ;)
I do not know do you have 2stroke or 4 stroke scoot. I think that 4 stroke 50 ccs is OK if you drive in area where there are no hills and if you are less than 150 lbs. I have 17 % uphills from work to my house 13 kms away and 50 cc 4T is not an option.
However, 50 cc 2stroke my gf has (6 hp, almost 2.5x the power of Kymco`s 50 cc 4stroke) is quite comfortable even for me (also big boned) tipping scales at 230-240 lbs. You can go 100 km/h downhill and 50-55 uphill 17%.

Just before Christmas I bought a 09 People 50 2 stroke 2nd hand from the original owner ~2500 miles on it. She runs like a clock. I weight 260 add another 10 lbs. for clothes. It pulls me with no problem and has power to spare. It'll run 35 and get there pretty quick. I plan on adding a storage crate so I can carry different stuff (groceries, lunch box, trips to the auto store, beach bag, lap top, etc.) Also I just bought the accessory buddy seat off eBay for $30.00 8). I don’t plan on riding it with my wife as the 2nd passenger but I think the bike will pull me and a small child with no problem. I do plan on getting a little more top end by changing the drive boss. Hope to reach 40mph and I'll be happy ;D, It runs so good I hate to change anything else. The reason I bought a 50cc was because I liked the idea of not having to register it with DMV, state tags etc. but like the original poster I had concerns about it pulling a big boy. Let me tell ya, it’s pulling about 300lbs and sounds strong. I've only driven it a few hours as our VA weather has been quite cold. If (and I seriously don't think it will) she blows up this spring from the extra tonnage I'm out no money and can probably part it out for what I paid. Besides I started my life style eating change again after New Year and hope to be couple of lb's lighter by spring. If you buy one I think you'll be satisfied
-
Well there ya go , and yes Virginia does have hills !
-
LOL. And cold weather, too!
Welcome to the forum, Willy Run!!

""That's why I need the free flow air filter and the bigger main jet....""
I am pretty sure these guys use a 'free flow exhaust' as well. The 'bigger main jet' can be addressed by someone else. :P
-
Oh, NO!
Hey...sparko...is there anyway one can possibly unsee something once it's been seen?!?
:D
u so silly
-
I actually think it is pretty cool that these guys are out on their bikes despite being a little gravitationally challenged. If these guys can do it, anyone can. They are in such tight formation I thought it was the Blue Angels at first. :)
-
it be fine i get a big scooter thats is a 50cc im 235 it well do good for you if it a lot of hills you can put smaller rollers in if to help pull
-
I had an Agility 50, weighed 230+ and rode it to the top of Lookout Mountain several times. I was impressed with its performance for such a small engine and the fact it would perform at all with my bulk. Get the People 50, ride it for a year and then decide any changes. I DID de-restrict the Agility short of the CDI and it did seem to improve. Go for it!

I've got a buddy seat, drive boss, main jet and an exhaust from an older "04" people on the way. I'll pep up this monster 50cc 2 stroke and find a nice trunk for a little more storage ( &weight). After that all I'm worried about is keeping an eye out for ol Smokey and his radar gun. Over 35mph and no plates and they'll haul me down to the court house and get some more of my money :)
It's a quality and machine has the power to boast, "Eat my dust"

More than likely your scoot is already derestricted Willy Run. I drove my 09 off the lot and weigh in the 260 range also. It would do no more than 30 flat ground restricted. Dealers often offer to derestrict scooters for a price. Mine wanted $250. That included new "drive boss", derestricted exhaust, and bigger main jet. You may have some or all of those already done.
Not that you don't have a quality scooter. These things are great. Get a Tecnigas pipe next if you like the way it sounds now. Beware once you start you can't stop
Oh! Almost forgot. Buddy seat for $30 on Ebay! ;D Howd you find that?
-
I am 235# and ride my stock 2009 People 50 from Lakewood to downtown and back at least 3 times a week (If it will start in the morning - today it did not.). It's rolls along just fine.

HI,
big or small doesn´t matter.
Scooter = fun
All is in the scooter, Kymco People S is the best for the big boned.
I had also 2stroke Kymco people, for me it was small.
4 stroke scooters...Up to the hills is the biggest problem, but you know what, we are talking here about 50cc scoots, so enjoy even 25km/h speed up to the hill, this is all about fun, not super over tuned monster scooters.
As I am myself 118kg. 182cm tall.
Sometimes even in the Winter, and here I am not talking about "some" snow, winters here are
5 -... meters walls around and -35c -...
On the speedo will be soon 20 000km.
Enjoy riding on this super scoot!

Get the 70cc upgrade kit. It saved my bacon on some of the hillier portions of Colorado Springs. :)
-
I am well past due for a tuneup, so I am going to take it in to Sportique for that and to have them de-restrict it. Might check in to the 70cc option.
How would I know if I have an S or not? All I know is that it is a 50cc 2 stroke.

S is a four stroke model, so you have smaller version of the people.
Look here...suppose to be all the kymco models:
