PALMANOVA, as already mentioned, built as a fortress city and a bulwark in insecure medieval times.
Restructured by Napoleon Bonaparte in eighteenth century, close to my home, is always worth a trip and nice "Cafè Macciato".
A beautiful cathedral dominates the centered parade ground, where several replicas of ancient construction machines are to be seen. (pls see pics)
The whole city is surrounded by several mounds and a moat, which could be dammed up to a water level of about five meters to repel advancing enemies.
Additionally were lots of tunnels, from which some were "contromine", means to lure the enemy into, whereupon this tunnel was partially blown up on them.
A national monument, worth to be checked out.

, water was provided by a "Venetian Aquaeduct", which source (well goes back into 12th cent.) was 32 kilometers away and completely subterran (outside the city), not easily to be discovered by enemies.

I Keep thinking how long it would take to construct something like this!!
What persons (religion, nationality, class?) were the actual laborer's?

@Stig, well, this goes deep into european history beginning with the worlds first republic, The Republic of Venice, which existed from 6th until the end of 17th century.

People who really were hands-on in this construction, were at that time slaves or citizen of Venice who had to pay their taxes on labour or soldiering.
This time in our history is for good reason not only called medevial but also "dark ages".
