Exactly!

Too bad the wife just made it very clear a S 8 2T isn't in my future - at least not anytime soon.   >:(

...reckon i misse dout on the common sense part....

..put a craigslist on the guilty and post that you're looking for a super8 on another...

A sensible strategy.

However, I'll let sleeping dogs lie at this point...

I still have lots of room to do some tuning and modding on the guilty anyway.

Must keep focus....

break out them tools

Damn - still haven't received my cheap impact wrench yet.

Might have to try and get after that variator nut without it tomorrow.

I know it can be done the hard way - but was hoping to do it the easy way.

Wish I had a vice grip that size.

I hope to be able to borrow the neighbor's impact wrench - but he hasn't been home all day.

Some nerve....

..they're at home depot and lowes and walmart...

I know, and it's been like 7 days since I was at Home Depot buying something so I'm due....

If the neighbor doesn't show up by tomorrow morning, I may have no choice but to stop by HD when I, out of the goodness of my heart, decide to volunteer to go out and get some Dunkin' Donut coffee in the morning (as a special Sunday treat).

Title: Re: new rings
Post by: wordslinger on October 24, 2010, 01:51:51 AM
..i reckon you might have to pass by home depot on the way for donuts.......

..and maybe you remembered that "clamp pic" from the forum when you saw the HD sign...huh??

My fear isn't getting slapped - it's that she would use those vise grips to do some kind of Three Stooges thing where she uses them to grab me by my ears or something.

Title: Re: new rings
Post by: Rianna on October 24, 2010, 02:07:44 AM
LOL...okay, I'll be quiet, then, but really, I have doubts that line will get a pleasant result...

She's actually very nice and would never visit bodily harm on me - just for the record.

However, I do have family in town this weekend so in the end I should focus on seeing them since we only get together a few times a year.

Maybe I will have to wait until next weekend  :-\

Even cheaper than Home Depot.  Plus you get three different sizes.  I have several different clamps like this and use them all the time.

Thanks Pedro.

That looks like too good a deal to pass up.  Clearly I need those clamps in my life!

Good thing there's a Harbor Freight store not too far away.

Their electric tools are disposable but they're hand tools last quite a while.  You can't beat cheap.
Title: Re: new rings
Post by: wordslinger on October 24, 2010, 02:28:16 AM
..i just like the feel of a hand tool when working on my scoot...

..i KNOW how much torque i'm using....
Title: Re: new rings
Post by: oswaldters on October 24, 2010, 02:36:59 AM
That's a good point Word - I always worry about over torquing something.

The beauty of the impact wrench in my opinion is really getting tight/rusted nuts to open easily.

Putting them back on I'd rather be able to do it by hand to make sure they don't get over tightened.
Title: Re: new rings
Post by: wordslinger on October 24, 2010, 02:52:21 AM
..been working in industrial maintenance for over 20 years...

..kinda get a feel for torquing fasteners and such...

..these aluminum casings will not withstand ANY hard torque...

..the drive shaft nut is considered a stretch threaded nut..not to be torqued repeatedly...so, when you re-assemble, use a small bit of blue "lock-tite" threadlocker on the inner threads of the nut..

..don't need more than a glazing..

..but it's that extra bit of reassurance that counts...
Title: Re: new rings

small bit of blue "lock-tite" threadlocker

Now that I do have.

Progress!

I need me some of that. Saw some at the grocery store for like 5 bucks.

..these aluminum casings will not withstand ANY hard torque...

..always tighten your cvt cover fasteners by hand..

..even a 3/8" air ratchet will over-torque and strip out threads...

..been there...
Title: Re: new rings
Post by: oswaldters on October 24, 2010, 03:05:35 AM
That's the benefit of not owning any of those fancy tools - I have no choice but to do it by hand!

Yep,

And it ends up being a blood bond - especially when I bash my knuckles on something while trying to get something loose.

Seems to be a controversial topic judging by the variety of stuff I've read on the topic.

This was an interesting approach:  http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm (http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)
