Hi! I have a 2009 People 50 and I'm trying to figure out if the CDI is actually derestricted.
When I pull the green wire out of the CDI the scooter won't start. There's no other disconnected green wires laying around and there's only one green wire in the CDI.
Any ideas?

Welcome. 2 stroke or 4 stroke? Have you derestricted the boss drive in the CVT yet? If you can't get much more than 30mph then the CVT is restricted. Do that first. Then it seems the only way to tell is to run it wide open down a nice long hill and if you can hit 50mph, or close to it, without it cutting out you are derestricted(except that stock exhaust). My 09 had a green wire with a bullet type connector I unplugged right after I got it. I don't know if that did anything or not. I know it never cuts out though(52-53mph top speed downhill indicated).
-
..my 2007 tops out at 52-53 downhill...
..has the restricted oem exhaust, oem airbox and main jet...
..but it carries my 225 lb ass uphill like a raped ape!!..
;D

It's a 2 stroke. The boss is derestricted. I can't go more than 45 on a downhill, no matter how I try. I can't hit more than 35 if I'm lucky going uphill and I'm only 145lbs.
I have a friend with a brand new People 50, derestricted by the dealer, and he leaves me in his dust both up and down hill.

...wow..sounds like the cdi...hmmmm...
-
Yep sure does
Maybe 55mph I don't know Im guessing cause the speedo(numbers) stop at 50. Really I didn't gain much downhill speed. Flat ground and up hill is much better though.

Did ya buy it new, ezrae, or is it possible someone put a different CDI in it?
-
...speedometer on my 2001 goes up to 60 mph...07 only goes to 50...
-
Hmm...did a law change somewheres between 2001 and 2007?
-
..maybe, but it seems that the pre 2005 ppls have a virtually unrestricted exhaust...

Yeah, I kinda figured that. So what's up with the green wire? It won't start if I disconnect it, so what else can I do?
-
..maybe art will know...
..i do not...

I bought it used, but the CDI is definitely stock. I checked the part number (30400-KFA6-9000) with the parts manual.

I'm googling that part # like crazy, exrae. Not finding anything about derestricting it, though. It does look like that CDI is used in ATVs and other scoots, though, so there should be some information about it somewhere.
-
Googling the People 50 CDI derestriction brought up this, though. It lists earlier years and gives a Kymco technical phone number to call with questions.

This is the green wire to un plug. If you don't have it You need to replace the cdi with a Kymco cobra cdi. There may be others but this is the one i know for sure works.

Did the community ever resolve the CDI issue? I have a 2009 People 50 (two stroke) and am unable to achieve a top speed above 35MPH. I have had the CVT derestricted, but I am unsure if a further destriction Mod can be performed to the CDI? I have researched the matter and all I can find is information relating to 2003 year models and before. Does a member of the community know if any performance enhancements can be attained by "Modding" the CDI for the 2009 model year?
THANKS!!!

Hi Todd!
The CDI that is in my scooter didn't match the one in the photo that was posted. I googled the number printed on the side and discovered that it is already derestricted. If I can find the number again without tearing apart the scoot I'll post them here.
I'm also not getting the performance I expect from this scooter (it's my second 2009 people 50). I've recently replaced the clutch springs (red big spring and yellow little springs, both brand new)and variator rollers (7 gram), but I haven't found an optimum configuration for those (suggestions welcome!) yet either.

Thanks Ezrae. Sounds like we are all in the same boat. I am out ideas - short of the big bore mod - that would generate any significant performance gains. I am very curious however as to what the mods you just outlined do for you. I am open to just about anything (although I would like to avoid the big bore mod if possible). Finally, I suspect you are right in that as best I can figure the CDI has been derestricted since '03 or so. Of course I would love to be wrong in that assertion!!

I had problems with my clutch slipping and studdering, so that's why I adjusted it. It already had a red big spring and yellow little spring installed, which I posted about in the People 50 forum - it doesn't seem likely to be stock. I replaced them with new springs of the same colors before putting the clutch back together. If I understand how the clutch springs work correctly, with this combo of springs, the clutch shouldn't engage until 1500RPM's.
With the new springs (and a good cleaning), my clutch no longer slips and studders, but I'm still not seeing speed/performance that I had with my other People 50. I can hear the engine revving higher than it did before I changed springs though. Next I'm going to adjust the variator rollers again to see if that helps - I'm planning on trying out the stock 8.5 gram rollers again with the new clutch springs to see if there's a difference.
