Title: How many of your scoots got that 1st 2oo/6oo mile valve check?
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on November 18, 2020, 12:05:35 AM
My LIKE200i manual said a valve check was to be carried out at 200 miles, along with oil screen clean and engine and gear oil change.
I changed both oils at 70 miles (some questioned what oil a Chinese factory might be using)
Dealer wanted $372 for a "first service"....so I set about learning how to DIY a valve check on my LIKE and accomplished it at mile 440, 4 weeks after purchasing the scooter. One was a little snug - but within specs. I re-set it.

My Piaggio Liberty150i specified a valve check, engine oil & oil-filter change at 600 miles.
Those were carried out at mile 602. All 3 valves in specs.

My Honda Forza used shims, and specified a valve check at mile 16,000! Sold it before then.

My Burgman 400 ----shoot, most folks sell it before ever doing a valve check, or never do it. Watch some videos to see why!

Anyway, all my scoots were broken in per the manual, and all received oil changes well before specified, and the LIKE and LIBERTY both received valve checks early in their careers!

Since I cannot just ignore service intervals - I now own only scooters on which it is easy to at least perform valve checks! (I check before buying!)

good question! I wonder what overall % of scooters get not only the initial valve check but EVER get a valve check?

My used scoot got the valve check shortly after I purchased it, used, at 1800+ miles and 5 years old. Thinking back, I'm sure I did it due to being on this forum. I highly doubt my scoot had the valve check done prior.

It does help that the valve checks and adjustments are as simple as can be. The typical motorcycle with shim under bucket adjustments?..I'm not going to do that one myself, that's for sure!

My current XTown 300i 2019-----first checked valves at 10,000 miles=all ok.  Will check again at 30,000 miles.  I do not buy bikes with shim type valve adjustment anymore.  Nice were Honda CB750 Nighthawk or Kawasaki 1200 4---automatic, just one less thing to worry about.

My XTown 300i 2019 went in to the dealer for it's 600 ml service so maybe?!  Good to hear I can ride to at least 10K without worrying again John!

Bought mine second hand, with low Miki, don't know if the first valve check was done.
I did the first valve check at 30000km, when the scooter had trouble starting when warm, and would sometimes stop when idleing.
After that once every 1-2 years.

My scooter got the 600 mile valve check and oil change as well as bolt tightness check, No charge for this service and they picked up and delivered to me as the dealer was 20 miles away. Great shop but no longer in business due to age and family illness. Since then all my maintenance done by me.

Pretty close on all of them except the side x side. That' an Agility and Vino for 50's, Yager and Buddy for 150-173's, People GTi300 and DT300i x2. The UXV500i got every fluid changed except coolant. Have yet to check the valves! Runs good, lasts a long time! So far....
The Kymcos seem very stable with valve clearance changing generally not at all.
