Title: parking tickets for mopeds.
Post by: tomheet on October 08, 2010, 11:01:45 PM
Today I got a parking ticket in grand rapids MI for parking on a sidewalk. Maybe not the brightest thing to do, but with an art prize competition  going on, the parking situation is crazy. The meter dweeb wrote up my scoot as a Kwang (whatever the hell that is) I have a ppl50. More importantly, the MI sec of state classifies my scooter as non-motorized vehicle, as it is 49.5cc. So, would the state definition trump  the City? If it's not a motorized vehicle, then it's as if they gave a ticket to a 10 speed. Can you get off with a technicality issue of mis-identifying the make?

Any one else deal with this?

I once got ticketed by a fatass cop for speeding in the car. I noticed that the date he put on the ticket was wrong. At the hearing with the magistrate,  I made the wrong date known, and walked away free and clear. Fatass? I should have said dumbass.

Fatass? I should have said dumbass.

..that's pretty much the ONE THING that MUST be correct on a ticket...

..you could easily prove that you were somewhere else....on that date....

It warms my heart to hear people getting out of ticket because sloppy bureaucrat's can't perform their job properly. Seriously, I'm going to check into the "non-motorized vehicle" clause we have in MI for <49.5cc bikes

Word, that post of you being pulled over by Barney Fife was hillarious! probably not to you though, at the time. Glad the prick got  nothing out of it but the frustration of getting nothing for his time spent.

My ticket is 20 bucks. Not worth more than a bit of phone time, prolly get me no where.

...i was kinda enjoying it tho...

..i reckon it was the FIRST time i was ever pulled, and had absolutely NOTHING to be worried about!!!..lol..

..other than being late for work..but that wasn't much...

..still...i think you could beat the ticket!!...

Man - glad my scoot doesn't have plates on it.

Can't give me a photo radar ticket, can't give me a parking ticket.

I do have to say that everyone parks their scoot on the sidewalk in the D.C. area.  Have to have something to chain the thing to - bike rack, lamp post, etc.

interesting OS- may prove there is always the exceptionally bad horror story out there, maybe in general it's not a problem in most locales to park on a side walk, specially if you do it neatly. I pulled mine out of the way, and next to a lamp post to BE Courteous to foot traffic.

Sounds like someone needing to write tickets for the sake of writing tickets.

I've driven (slowly of course) on the sidewalk right past police offers standing on the sidewalk while on my way to park.

They don't so much as blink at that.

I think the law of averages would say, if a city is large enough to have meter dweebs, you will get a ticket for the slightest infraction, Hell, some probably tape measure to see if you are over 30' from an intersection, right down to the inch. Grand Rapids is probably this kind of city.

Chaining to the flag pole is a nice touch though...

Never chained up to one of those.

Yeah, that what I figure, the police officers have better things to do than go after a scooter safely parked out of the way.

Interesting, I've notice the same thing in downtown DC in and around Capitol Hill.

Interesting concept.

Beats using a bike rack - especially when someone chains their bike up to the same support I use and leaves me no room to get out without hitting against the bike.

Then again, my 230 lb. scooter wins over their 25 lb. bike every time.

the way it went down was some of us got to gether and made a petition going and gave it to the city
and a year later we are get parking places. cool to know scoots win.

..around here...we just roll up in front of walmart..into the diagonal painted lines around the handicapped spaces...right up front, y' know...but NOT impeding the space needed for anybody to use for getting in and out of their vehicle...

..we just don't do that....

 ;)

..lock the front wheel and either carry or lock in your helmet....

..no need for chaining in most areas...

Must be because all the criminals are hanging around the court house instead of out stealing stuff.

Those criminals know where to go...

Around here we've had a number of cases of law enforcement vehicles getting broken into and tactical gear stolen - you know vests, automatic weapons, etc.

Absolutely! Making sure not to block handicap access of couse. I did it at walmart yesterday.

I ride right up to the front door at Guilford county courthouse and im not the only one.. There is a bike rack right there. Definitely need it locked there. Even though most scooters I see arent locked mine is always the nicest and always locked. I love being able to hop off and go right inside. Beats parking in the deck accross the steet and paying.
