After I turn the key on everything on the dash lights up but as soon as I hit the starter button everything goes out...any help appreciated

Bad connection or battery.

You've got a short in the wire, or maybe a blown fuse? Since everything that is supposed to happen immediately prior to starting seems to be happening, there has to be something cutting power from the system as soon as you press that button. I guess that's obvious, but it can only be so many things.
If there's any good news here, my guess is that it's just an electrical issue and not some major mechanical flaw with your machine.

I would check your battery connection sounds like not tight or dirty terminal.

A weak battery can do this. Check all connections. Replace if necessary.
