I know few here take long scooter trips----good excuse often old/never done before, etc., put it in truck.
As motorcyclist I like long scooter trips, at slow pace, done cheaply. At 81, this summer, as things clear up, would like to ride the Rockies in Canada again, easy to stretch that to Alaska, going in at Hyder. Also would like to go start of Scooter Cannonball Rally in ME.
This year more camping----getting tired of India run lower end motels----Last Model 6 I stayed in, India Run....full of bugs---La Quinta--MOLD.
Been doing this since 1955 and never tire of it. Enjoyed a lot in Japan, scooter Transportation in Korea, everything in almost 25 years in Europe------US, believe it or not----Neb, SD, ND can be very interesting....small towns and the people.

Scooter traveling is my favorite form other than horseback. I enjoy experiencing an area through all senses.

How cool it would be to ride the Canadian Rockies in the summer! John, you are a scooter riding machine! Hope you make it there and up to Alaska.

Been to Alaska many times on scooter---Hyder usual stop for hamburger and beer, although last time my usual place closed---for day? or for ever? Rode the Alcan highway with Honda 750---too many people, too many idiots in motorhomes who like to run up your butt in bad road conditions!

Even the maxi-wannabees like yours, John and mine seem to offer a lot for touring over a motorcycle like dry feet! When it's hot and sweaty, I just stick my toes in the slipstream to cool them off! The high center is still lower than throwing your leg over. Nearly vibration-less modern scoot is way easier than the traditional vertical thumper and solid mount to the frame. There are several trips I would like to make but like you the Patel Motels are getting outrageous in price for a third-rate dump and security is non-existent. Additionally, the finer motels are financially out of common sense and their security is no better. I guess I will have to look to camping as well if I can slip the bonds of a fearful wife!

It would definitely take a iron butt to ride to Alaska and back. Kind of reminds me of the guy that owned the local motorcycle/scooter shop. He made one last trip on a KLR 650 before he passed from cancer.
I travel different now. For long trips I take the truck and travel trailer with a motorcycle or scooter loaded in the back. When I stop for a couple of days I explore the area on the motorcycle /scooter. A scooter and staying in motels would definitely be cheaper. The Collies go on all my long trips now so it's excursions from a home base (TT) now.
Neighbor used to take long motorcycle trips and used his bike to make a tent for the night. His last story of taking his HD to Sturgis and sleeping in a tent was interesting to say the least. It rained soaking everything and waking up in a puddle of water. Told me he spent the rest of the night packed into the laundry with other campers drying his clothes and trying to keep warm.

Similar memory for me of my 30-year riding companion who had decided to give up biking in his mid-70’s as (he felt) his reactions were no longer up to it, but wanted one last biking trip to the Isle of Man where we had travelled so often for the TT and the Manx GP. We sorted it out in 2016 for the Manx and had a wonderful week of weather and camaraderie. A small thing, but it meant the world to him.

We all reach that time sooner or later. That's why I'm trying to get some travel in since I'm retired and have time and my health is good. We are not guaranteed anything in life.
