Title: Front Brake Pins
Post by: Rianna on September 25, 2010, 07:10:34 PM
Damn cheap ass tools! I got the damn allen wrench stuck in the damn pins. Maybe I shouldn't have hammered so hard. This sh** is on there way too damn tight I'm tellin' ya! I managed to get it out on the first one, but now it's stuck in the second one and it ain't coming out. That damn dealership could have done this sh** right before they sold it!!! Alright, yeah, you can go ahead and laugh now 'cause I'm a girl and a weakling. lol. Now that the pins are loose it just squeals when I spin the wheel. Those damn bolts though are another story. They just pissin' me off!!! >:(

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid...

Thank you, oswaldters! Yeah, I may have to ride around with an allen wrench add-on...LOL...but I got them pins and bolts loose! Now I'm gonna go look for that other thread about what all to check out.

Not to worry, Word will be able to tell you how to hook up some led lights to it so people will think you planned to have it there.

Pretty soon we'll all be doing it!

These ones. :)

Are they the pins holding the caliper together? Might be best to remove the caliper as a unit than to split it, at least, until you know what the problem is.
Title: Re: Front Brake Pins
Post by: Rianna on September 26, 2010, 01:07:15 AM
Hi, sid, how do I remove the caliper as a unit than to split it? Not sure what you mean. I have only loosened the pins and the bolts, not actually taken anything off yet. When I went back to check things out I just happened to look up and see that fluid getting ready to drip down on me. Then I took the front panel off and took some pics. Wanted to see what was going on first. I think I looked up there because the front rubs or squeaks when you turn the handlebars and I was probably trying to figure out if that noise was coming from the frame parts rubbing together or some cables rubbing against something inside up there.
Title: Re: Front Brake Pins
Post by: sidthesloth on September 26, 2010, 01:17:24 AM
The caliper is in two parts, the mounting plate and the actual caliper itself. The mounting plate bolts to the fork and the caliper floats on the pins so that when you operate the brake, the piston pushes the outer pad onto the disc, as it does this, the caliper body is pushed in the other direction forcing the inner pad onto the other side of the disc.
The squeaking you can hear is probably you speedo cable rubbing on a wiring harness or part of the frame/plastic.
If you have loosened the bolts you can take the caliper off to have a look inside to see what the noise was being caused by. Remember, DO NOT squeeze the brake lever while the caliper is off the disc.

Thank, you, sid! I WILL NOT sueeze the brake lever! If I do I will be soo asahmed after your warnings. lol. So I can do that safely without having to remove the brake line or end up with fluid running everywhere? I ask because it's in the living room right now. I have cardboard down, but if it's gonna get messy I will try to find some plastic or something to put down under the scoot for protection.

Ha! A piece of an acorn shell fell out! I set it back, but not tight. It's still rubbing though. Hmm...Pads look nice from what I can see. I might let it sit 'til morning and look again when I'm not so tired.

lol...you reckon I ought to take learn how to take the whole thing apart and put it back together again bolt by bolt while I'm at it? hehehe Y'all used to this stuff. It makes my brain tired.  :D

Well, that will put your mind at rest. As for having done it before, don't be so sure, I am now into a job I have never done. It was the same when I did the cylinder upgrade, ya gotta start somewhere.

Hey, can I sand them brake pads? What are they made of? One of them got nicked by something at the edge of one of the grooves about halfway down. In the shape of a small half circle there's some pad missing It may not be a big thing. Just curious.

They look even to me, but it still seems to be catching. It doesn't sound right when I spin it. I haven't taken it for a ride yet to see if the loud noise is completely gone...could be okay as it is. It's just not spinning smoothly and I can't "see" anything else it could be.

..you're gonna hear a bit of noise when spinning your wheel by hand...

..and it might sound escessive, but normally, you won't hear it on a ride...

..gotta ride it to know, y' know??!!....

I'm sure the new tires will handle the rain well.  You know, those Cheng Shin's actually did really well in the wet so I'm expecting no issues with the Avon's.

I've been itching to give them a real run - but after 2 months of no rain we've moved into ark building weather.

I'll still ride to work - but do so a little more gingerly.

Title: Re: Front Brake Pins
Post by: Rianna on September 29, 2010, 03:13:22 AM
Hi, oswaldters, thanks for asking, but I'm still having some problems. I went to the store today (finally got that diet soda!) and all was well.  :)
On the way back, though, as soon as I started coming down the hill I started hearing some noise again.  :(

It's really weird and it will drive me crazy if I don't figure it out soon. I came home and and put the sodas in the fridge and decided to take a longer ride because the store I went to is only like a mile and a half away, maybe 2 miles at the most. It's close to an hour walk there and back. So I rode about 6 or 7 miles and I find that now it's kind of a bumpy ride along with the noise.  :'(

I swear to you, I don't see nothing wrong with the tire! It's killing me because that's always the first thing I think of. Sure, I suppose it could be off balance or something.

I won't swear to it, but I think the brake problem is solved. Sure, that rotor could be off a bit and I just can't "see" it. Likewise that little gouge or nick or whatever it's called in the pads could cause a problem, but I just don't think that's it. I think there could be an additional problem just waiting to be diagnosed.  :-\

Probably I shouldn't ride it when I don't know how safe (or unsafe) it is. But the only way to figure it out is to keep riding it until the problem becomes noticeable enough for me to be able to describe it. Anyway when driving it longer I noticed that the noise and bumpiness in the front end is not constant. When I stopped at a light I expected to hear it again when I started up, but I didn't. After I started through the turn from the light it started again. I pulled off into a parking lot and went behind the strip of stores where there's no cars and stopped, looking at that tire again. The problem is there somewhere. I give it throttle and ease ahead and hear the noise. The instant I hit the brake the noise stops, which makes me think the brake grabbing is correcting the problem rather than causing the problem, if that makes sense. I hit the throttle again, staring at that dang tire and listening to this weird noise and then I slam on the front brake hard enough to almost throw me off of the seat, lol, and this weird thing happens where the brake starts to grab but feels like it slips for a second then the front tire feels like it drops about a half an inch or so then the brake grabs hold with a lot more force than I expected. (I wish I could explain things better.) I give it some throttle and...noise gone. Hmm....I ride a little ways toward the end of the shopping center and damn if it doesn't start again when I'm turning around. Grr...I stop and push on the front of the bike and bounce it up and down a bit and...noise gone. Weight shifting and turns seem to come into play somehow. (Sigh)

I keep thinking...front end - brake, tire, shocks, steering. Reckon I ought to look at the steering or shocks next?

-Man, that little bit of time riding was feeling so good, too-

Ha! i'm starting to think the posession part is real  ;D  I think you still have a piece of something stuck in there. You should still be able to ride but pay attention to it. It may correct it's self. Try to ride the brake a bit(front) and notice how it acts. Is there a pull or thumping, hopping if so the roter may be screwed. If minor ride it. But those scrates  I seen in the begining may have damaged it worse than it looks. The main danger here is premiture brake wear as long as the rest works try it out with cation.

Thanks, art and blue. Hey, you ever hear of this trick? Will it work? I wish I could find the site where I read it again but I forgot to save it. It said it's the ball point pen test used to check the surface finish on a rotor.

Write your name on the rotor.
If the ink leaves a continuous line the surface is smooth enough.
If the ink line is broken up into dots the surface is too rough or coated with grease.

It makes sense, but they usually squeek and squeel if real bad.(you will know) Like I said a little out, just brake wear, not optimal but rideable if on a budget  ;)
Something stuck in there you want to get it out asap.

Title: Re: Front Brake Pins

the front tire feels like it drops about a half an inch or so then the brake grabs hold with a lot more force than I expected.

Sounds right to me - anytime you get on that front brake suddenly you'll get the 'nose dive' as the weight of the scoot shifts forward.  Doesn't take much to compress those front shocks and that front brake will grab hold more than you'd expect if you squeeze a little harder than you intended.

Glad you got it out for a ride.  Should help you diagnose the problem.
Title: Re: Front Brake Pins
Post by: Rianna on September 29, 2010, 03:42:05 PM
Mornin' oswaldters. I'm glad folks are understanding what I'm saying a little because it's difficult to explain. Laying on the brake heavy and compressing the shocks Stops the noise until the next time I shift my weight, make a turn, hit a bump in the road, etc.

Something is out of balance. Could be several things. The brake is (for the moment - Can't ride all over town with my hand on the front brake continuously) compensating enough to attempt to correct the problem. Even slight pressure on the brake at any speed stops the noise. And the disk is cool to the touch even after a longer ride now. Anyway, I'm looking for tricks or tests that will help to Rule Out a problem from the steering, brake, tire, etc. Anyone have any?

Thanks.

Hopefully someone will have some good ideas for you on this.  These noises can be really hard to pinpoint since they can come and go so quiclkly.

Having not heard the noise and not having the greatest mechanical aptitude here, if this was happening to me I would think the next thing I would look at is the front wheel assembly.  Could concievably be something a simple as the speedometer gear box or maybe the wheel bearing?

Not sure how you'd test this though...

k, thanks, oswaldters! I checked this morning to see if there were any new leaks from the steering stem and didn't see any. The two bolts above the rider's right side shock were loose, one of them being very loose. If I can tighten it chances are it was way too loose. Perhaps the shock was changed or checked during service and not tightened well...dunno. If that makes the ride smoother and I hear less noise on my next test run I'll try to find someone in the neighborhood to tighten it better for me. (It's raining here again today. :() Still looking things over. Don't know much about the speedometer gear box, so it wouldn't have occurred to me...could give it a look, too, though, if I can find it in the manual and figure out how to take the handlebar covers off. Thanks.

Drought or not, you can stop sending me the rain now...

This is starting to sound like a dangerous situation to me.  Loose bolts, clunking starts just from leaning in a turn.  Did you do that steering head check?

When you say "rider's right side shock", do you mean the REAR shock?  Or the front fork?

Sorry, Hoolander, I meant the mount bolts at the front forks - on the left side as I was facing it from the front of the bike.

And yeah, doesn't seem to me like the dealer should have put on the showroom floor quite yet. Yes I checked it like you said, I neither saw nor heard anything that caught my attention, but having never examined these things before I may not notice something out of the ordinary as someone else may.

Also should say, Hoolander, that the steering stem nut, at the top, seems tight to me. It's a little difficult to get at. Might be a little bit easier if I could figure out to remove the handlebar covers, not sure, though. I found an adapter for my large ratchet and put a socket on it and could not turn it like I could the mount bolts. But I also realize that someone with a bit more strength than me might be able to tighten it a bit.

Post by: Hoolander2 on September 29, 2010, 06:00:52 PM
Ok, well those loose bolts are definately not good!  Let's assume some work has been done all around the front end of this scooter.  If those bolts were left loose, maybe some others too, so check as many as  you can find!  How about the front axle nut?!?!  Axle pinch bolts?!?!  Don't know if your model has those.

Look, if you can, at the top of the forks and make sure both are even in the triple tree.  Both forks should be exactly the same level -- that is should stop or extend exactly the same amount at the top of the triple tree.

Well, if it's not the steering head, then you're concentrating in the right places as far as the brake caliper, wheel, etc.  Still sounds dangerous.  If you don't figure it out soon, I'd take it to a REPUTABLE mechanic.

I appreciate it, Hoolander. That's a big help! Will tighten everything I can find and give it another run whenever this rain lets up.

The front axle nut is very tight! If it comes down to needing to take it off I will probably need some help with loosening it up, so I may as well give everything else higher up a look over first. Didn't see any axle pinch bolts, but will tighten them if I come across any when I go back to it. I'll check out that triple tree area as best I can. Thanks!

Just to give a quick update, I tightened everything as best I could and ruined two sockets in the process. Lol.

My neighbor's son stopped by yesterday and took a look at the scoot for me. He said the caliper is way too tight, but the pads and disc look fine. He said I might need some grease, so I'll probably just get some to have on hand as soon as I'm sure it's okay to ride a bit of a distance. He took it apart and cleaned it a bit more and asked if I had a c-clamp for the piston. Couldn't find one so I borrowed some larger pliers from another neighbor and they seemed to work. He went to work adjusting things a bit to give a little more play. He didn't have much time but said he will stop back. Hopefully soon. I took it out in the afternoon for a run to the store that is farther away. There and back is close to 7 miles. It didn't make noise until I got about 2 blocks from home and then it was very faint. If I hadn't been aware of the noise already I might have missed it. Hoping it may just need another small adjustment or something. Still got those dreaded wheel and steering bearings in the back of my mind. I checked and there is no more grease anywhere around the steering, though. No leaks I can see. I'm really hoping that the dealer or someone just left a mess after adjusting the shocks or something. I'm usually not so lucky with repairs when it comes to cars and such, so I always expect the worst.

At least you're up and running so perhaps with a little more work you'll be fine.

Hope the rain holds off!
