I moved to Huntsville Alabama back in 2013. I have not regretted it. It's a great place to live but more important a fantastic place to be if you ride a motorcycle or scooter. Before moving here I lived a lot of different places so I have experienced other places as well. Lets see, here is where I have lived:
OH, CT, OH, LA, OH, FL, CA, FL, MI, MD, ME, Al, GA and finally back to AL. I have ridden in all but 7 states.
So why do I like it here in the SE?
I'll start with the great roads and scenery that we have here. Sure there is more spectacular scenery in the west but you can't beat the quality and and sheer number of great roads we have here.
Overall the weather is pretty good here too. OK, SoCal might have better overall weather but I couldn't afford to live there if I wanted to. I can ride year round here. Winterizing a bike? What's that. Yes we occasionally get snow and it's a bit hot in the summer. The nice thing is that If it's really hot here in Huntsville I can ride a couple hundred miles to get out of the heat in the mountains.
Then there are the people here. I have met so many great people to ride with.
There are so many interesting ride destinations and that includes a lot of unique restaurants with great food.
The cost of living here is low so I have enough money left over to be able to afford to go riding.
Are there negatives? Sure there are. There are some bad drivers here but no worse than other parts of the country. Traffic? Huntsville had pretty light traffic until about two years ago. This city is growing so fast it's hard to believe. The traffic is getting worse as the city grows but still nowhere near as bad as some of the place I have lived like New Orleans, San Diego or Atlanta.
OK, enough words, here's some pics.
While people in some northern cities were dealing with cold and even snow I was out riding the last few days.

Last week I posted up a ride for Sunday. We ended up with 11 riders, 8 on motorcycles and three on scooters. We rode to this really interesting historic old place for lunch. The food and service where great.

I went out riding again on Monday.
We stopped in Lynchburg, the home of Jack Daniels. This is a very popular destination for motorcycles. On the weekends the town square is filled with bikes. Since it was Monday we were the only ones there.

Incredibly crappy wx here in Grand Rapids. I actually thought about going South. Never been to 'Bama. I'll have to check it out.

Huntsville is a great place to live but it's not much of a tourist town since it only has one tourist attraction. I rode there with a friend a few days ago and we took some pics.

Go to Alabama and find out what REAL barbeque tastes like! MI and WA get their bbq out of a #10 (1 gallon) can!

Purely from a riding perspective there are better places to live than Alabama. IMO, North Carolina probably has the best riding in the country but Jobs and Taxes can be an issue. North GA and Tennessee are also great places to ride and live. Work brought me to Alabama. My wife absolutely loves it here and would shoot me if I tried to move. We probably made more friends here in our first year here than we did in eleven years in the Atlanta area. The riding here is good but not the best in the SE. The thing is that the best riding is not that far away!
For example, back in September I took my Scooter to Tellico Plains, TN for 4 days of riding some really great roads. It was miserably hot at the time here in Alabama but very comfortable in the TN mountains.

C'mon Crossbolt - we gots some great Q here in Grand Rapids :). What were you thinking?
Klaviator - Was talking about this with my wife and some friends the other day (moving south). Wife loves the heat- it makes me miserable, particularly the humidity. Besides, she plans on working for a while yet.....
The heart issues are always in the back of my mind, so would want to stay close to good medical facilities, but don't want to be in a big city.
We just have to plan to look around. Have had Marysville in my mind as a place to look....

If I wasn't living here I would certainly consider Maryville, Knoxville or Chattanooga. Tennessee has low taxes, I think that houses in those areas are still reasonable although I haven't checked. The great thing about those cities is that if it's hot and humid it's real easy to ride to the mountains and get out of it. Around here we have some small mountains and you can feel the difference in temperature when riding them but it's much better in East TN and NC.
I used to hate heat and humidity but I have somewhat acclimated to it. It's not as bad here as it is a little further south.
I'm getting ready to go for a ride now. It was 27 with frost on the yard this morning. It's high 30s now with a forecast high of 57 with wall to wall sunshine. It's forecast to drop down to 18 on Tuesday. We can also have 70 degrees in February.
-
When I first fetched to in 1977 Birmingham, the FBO at Shelby Co. Airport told me to check the windsock and if I didn't like what I saw, wait 5 minutes and it would change. Or just land anyway! Older I get, the less hot the summers are here....
-
I live in Chattanooga (Wife had friends here and now owns a business) and to be quite frank, it sucks!! 46th in US in quality of medical care, way overpriced Dentists, just plain expensive, hot......and any place that can screw up McDonald's pancakes sucks!!--.---Sick here....they like to give you pills you probably do not need. Try to get a decent tap beer here?
Riding can be ok, a bit dangerous because of the horrible drivers and their manners!!----But once you have seen all the places/stuff are they worth returning to? For 2 wheel riders---Trailer Bikers can make it very dangerous on weekends in the mountains.
Decent Kymco dealer in Dalton, GA

My experience has been completely different than yours. OK, there are some horrible drivers here but having lived all over the country that is not unique to the south. Maybe Huntsville is different from Chattanooga but if haven't heard any complaints about Chattanooga from the people who live there on other forums.
As far as returning to places I have already seen, I love to ride and I can ride a great road hundreds of times and not get tired of it. On top of that there are so many roads around here that after riding this area since 1990 I still keep finding roads I haven't ridden before. Even if I ride another 25 years I know I will never ride them all.....but I am going to try!
On top of that, for me riding is not just the roads, it's also the people. Riding is a great way to meet other interesting people. I go on rides with other people as well as meeting random people at the places I stop.
For example I set up a ride for yesterday. 4 other people showed up. I knew 2 of the people and 2 I hadn't.

One of the great thing about the south is all the restaurants that not only only have great food but also make great ride destinations. For this ride I picked the Old Delina Country Stor.
I took the above pic as we were leaving but when we got there around a dozen bikes were parked there. We had a great lunch both because of the food as well as the company. There was a husband and wife who had ridden the Trans America trail this summer. The wife had all of 9 months riding experience when she did it. It was fascinating hearing about that ride. Before they went on this ride I had recommended bringing a spare clutch cable and guess what....yep, they had a clutch cable fail. Since they followed my advice it wasn't an issue. I ended up getting a free lunch because of that!
Back to the restaurant, this building was built in the late 1800's. It was used for other things before finally becoming a restaurant. The owner came over and talked with us for a while. He's the one hidden by the menu.

Someone on ADV had posted that he would also be there with some friends. So I walked back to a table with around a dozen "bikers" and asked if anyone there was on ADV. One of them was and he was the one who had posted. So I got to put a face to a name on the internet. It turns out that the "bikers" were a couple of CMA groups, one from Tennessee and one from Alabama. They knew each other and happened to end up at the same place to eat lunch at the same time.

Pfft! Yeah, WINTERIZING! What is that? Check oil, gas, squeeze the tires, light the fire, GO RIDE! That is winterizing in the south! Great pictures!
-
At 1800 - 2000 feet. the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee is somewhat cooler than surrounding areas with acceptable winter weather. Excellent riding areas on and near the plateau.

It is December and we still have nice weather for riding. I got out last Saturday and went riding with 8 others. It was all motorcycles on this ride, no scooters. I have done far more riding on my scooters than my motorcycles this year but I still like my motorcycle. I'm down to just one motorcycle after selling my KLR650 this summer.
It was sunny on Saturday and got to around 60 degrees. Perfect for riding.
I took this shot over my shoulder.

"It was sunny on Saturday and got to around 60 degrees. Perfect for riding."
It has been a great autumn. I just got a Reflex going (Oct/Nov), and purchased a DT300i over Thanksgiving. I thought it would be spring before I got in any serious rides, but (here in North Ga... much like N. AL) I have been riding every weekend....
-
It was 41 here yesterday K, but sunny for the first time in 10 days so I took it as a sign and got the XT300 out for a quick spin. However, no heated grips or gloves and me foolishly still using my summer weight Dainese gloves meant I returned home with blue fingers! Notwithstanding that it was great to get out on 2 wheels again after the enforced break. If we only had the sort of weather you get, I'd be out most days. Roll on Spring.
-
We normally have nice riding days all through the winter, not every day but enough to at least get out for a short ride most days and a longer ride every so often. It looks like rain all day today followed by a couple of sunny but cool days. I'll at least ride to the grocery store or some other short ride those days.
-
Yep, it's sunny (and cold) here today so I think I'll get out for a spin later. It's the Law!
-
We got some snow last night. It was really cool and made it feel like Christmas! The next two days are supposed to be sunny and cool but warm enough for a short ride. I'll find some excuse to go for a ride later today.

Is that your home? It looks like you have a 4-stall garage for all your toys! :D
-
Is that your home? It looks like you have a 4-stall garage for all your toys! :D
I have a three car garage. Well that's what it's supposed to be. I don't actually park any cars in it :o
-
I found an excuse to go for a ride this morning. We were out of bananas! I waited until it was around 40 degrees and headed off for Wally World. There was still snow in places although it melted anyplace that wasn't shaded.
So I spent around 57 cents getting the bananas and headed home for a total ride of around 18 miles. It would be a shorter trip but I normally take some detours to make for a better ride.

I went for a walk yesterday. The sun was so bright it hurt my eyes. Between the blues skies and snow on the roofs of the houses and nearly 50 degree temperatures is as absolutely beautiful. That's why I love living here. My parents moved down to Alabama from Ohio this summer. My Mom said that up there they don't normally get much sunshine this time of year.
Today is supposed to be even nicer than yesterday. I WILL be going for another ride!

I was able to come up with two excuses to go ride today. First I was running low on ICE CREAM! Can't be running out of ice cream ;D Second was that the ADV scooter tag would be an easy grab for me. The current tag was "end of road". So I headed off in the opposite direction of the grocery store and took this pic to grab the tag:
Then I rode to the grocery store. On the way home I took a slight detour to get a new tag. The new tag is Helicopter or Military aircraft. I took both pics with my phone so the quality is not nearly as good as the pics I normally get with my camera.

It was nearly 70 degrees today so I got out and rode around 50 miles or so. Storms will be rolling through this evening and drop the temperatures down with a high around 45 tomorrow. That's still warm enough to go riding but 70 is much nicer.

The weather is one of the reasons I live here. We do get some miserable weather over the winter but it's mixed in with some pretty nice weather so I never park the bikes for long.
During the summer it gets pretty hot here but I can just head for the mountains to get out of the heat.
-
45 and sunny today. Perfect for a 20 or so mile ride.
OK, maybe this road wasn't perfect for my worn out tires.

Looks like a bluebird sky day for a nice ride and I am envious as I sit here with snow and 0 deg on the thermometer! Thank you for posting and yes that road did look slippery

Another day in the 60s today although there was a small chance of rain. That didn't stop me and a bunch of friends from getting out and riding.

Great pictures as usual! I want to see a picture of YOU while you take a picture behind while in a turn! This activity is akin to light in a cigaratte and pouring a cup of coffee while intercepting the glide slope and localizer all at once!

I added up the mileage I rode on all my bikes in 2019. My Like 150i came out with the most miles.
Like 150i 6635
Majesty 5749
Versys 650 1348
KLR650 1230
Super 8 746
Total 15,708
I sold my Super 8 back in April and my KLR650 this summer. I plan on buying a new dual sport motorcycle in the next month. I'm leaning towards a Kawasaki KLX250.
Overall 2019 was a pretty good year for riding although I didn't take any really long trips. All of my riding trips were 4 days long or less.
I expect to do better in 2020.
