Title: Hose to nowhere - help!!!
Post by: scosgt on September 18, 2010, 07:49:18 PM
On my S200 there is a hose that goes - nowhere. It comes off the air cutoff valve, and has live vacuum. If I cover the hole with my thumb, I can hear the idle change. It looks like it should connect to an open nipple on a tee that comes off the tank, but is way too short. In fact, it looks like someone cut the hose with a knife!

The scoot starts and runs perfectly, but I would like to know if I need to re-connect this hose, as I currently have what amounts to a vacuum leak.

..the hose assembly should connect to your fuel petcock, the secondary air filter and the intake...

..looks like someone has done some creative re-hosing...

So is it supposed to connect to that open nipple in the pic? I could just buy a length of hose and replace the one on the nipple to make it all meet. But do I need to?

..i just disconnected the hose on my a50, that opens the secondary air filter, which draws exhaust air back into the system....you know th bit...emmisions....

..which is what i believe, from those pics, is that open, cut-looking hose...

..imma see how my scoot runs without the pollution control circuit enabled....

brb...

..in the pic "air3"...where does that bottom piece of tubing go...

..in the pic "air1"..where does the tube coming off the side of the engine's intake go..

The tube with the connector and open nipple goes to the gas tank.
the cut tube comes from the air cutoff valve.
Not sure where the bottom tube (with the open nipple) goes - it appears to go under the floorboards and up to the steering area, but of course that makes no sense.

but of course that makes no sense.

..i know of nothing up that way that would need vac attached to it...

..imma make that run, but i had to adjust my idle mix after blocking that circuit, however i kinda liked the throttle response off idle.......it quickened...

..what about the tube off the side of the intake...that's the source of your vacuum...

..where's it going??

I think I am buying into the emissions idea. It looks like it sucks fumes out of the gas tank. No idea what it does with them. Other than the fact that blocking the vacuum changes the idle, it does not seem to do much, Have ridden this scoot about 1000 miles with no issues at all. Starts right up, no stalls, good accel all the way up to the top end of 60.
Must have been disconnected for a reason.

..if blocking it changes the idle speed, then your idle mix is either becoming lean or richer by doing so...

..just to throw that out...

..but if you've had no issues, then...................

It probably makes it richer, as it is sucking less air, but that is just a guess. Plug looks good. Maybe slightly rich, but I also changed the air filter, and scoots tend to be factory set too lean anyway.

On another note, I dropped the bike in my driveway last week. Just a few scratches, no biggie, but I did have some oil in the airbox. I am assuming that is because of the drop, but I'll have to keep an eye on it. Dropped it onto the left side, so things could flow in that direction?

...it's normal to have a small bit of oil in the airbox...there is a tube that attaches to your valve cover,..... "pcv"..type setup...

..that draws vapors from the top of your engines head, into the airbox...

..sorry to hear you dropped th scoot tho...

..itsa bad feeling to see'r laying there, helpless on her side....

..dang.....

OK, I thought it was supposed to go into the drain tube. Which is totally dry, BTW.

I had just finished working on it, I had the big Givi box on the back, and I revved it up. But I forgot to lean forward or hold onto the brake, the back wheel hit the ground (VERY easy to happen on this bike due to the weight and balance, would not happen on the SYM, you would have to stand on the box to get the rear wheel onto the ground when it is on the stand), so of course it jumped off the stand and in my panic I gave it more throttle - and there she was, laying on the ground. Sucks.
If I'm gonna do this kind of stuff, I might as well try wheelies!

Well anyway, maybe Art will look at his next time he pulls the body and we can find out where the hoses connect and what they do.

..look in the service manual...there should be a vac diagram....

..really??..dry??..wow..that's kinda odd...

...yeah, and now were talking about a completely different set of hoses...lol...

...well, i just got back from that run, scosgt...

..i don't think i'm going to hook that tube back up on my scoot...

..but keep in mind, i have also removed the catalytic converter from my exhaust pipe...

....actually, i believe that i've been needing to disable that circuit ever since i took out the cat....

..thanx scos!!!

wow...

Ha! I was scratching my head too. I eliminated all the smog. Took out the carbin canister and all attached(you can get to the spark plug now  ;D ) You do need to cap the inlet on the intake. It was a vent that seemed to have no perpose.  Like the rest of the emissions. Not a clue what it does  ???
The other hose coming out the head ran back to the airbox and t'd into the the vac lines, just a rebreather so by passed that also. Not sure what to do with the large end yet.(just caped it) It does have a positive flow And can spit some fire out of it if the motor misses  :o  but also seems to have no use except to vent unburnt fuel back to the airbox to re-cycle. Not sure if i should vant it with a check valve or eliminate it with a solid gasket at the mount.
At this point all runs good,no ill affects but no real gains in power either.
Sorry to hear about the bike,That sucks

So am I supposed to plug that vacuum line or just leave it sucking?

..i had a girlfriend once that liked suc..

..but if it aint hurt you as of yet..why worry??

I capped it at the fuel intake(short hose and a screw)and removed all.  The line in question is designed this way but can't make any resonable guess as to what it does.

I think it was tied to the carbin canister some how. Been awhile since i removed it. Maybe its an air freshener  :D

Plugging it makes the idle change a little bit. Not sure if it is for better or worse.

Meanwhile I put BRIGHT LED's into the position lights. Compensates for when the idle turns the headlights down. I can still REALLY be seen at night. And they do throw some light onto the road as well.

Cool!   I did have to reset my air idle screw after modding it. I think a 1/2 turn in

..well, does it idle higher or lower when plugged??

An unplugged vacuum hose will alter your air fuel mix as well as sucking unfiltered air into your engine. For me, I would find where it goes or plug it.

I think it goes down a bit.

I took a ride today. Yesterday I changed out the plug and air filter and setup the idle.

Runs perfectly, no bogging or anything. I think I'll just leave it alone, or I would be forced to re-tune everything for the different air flow.

Anyway, that's how I got it, and it has 6700 miles on it, so I guess it is nothing super destructive.
