Title: ZX50 CDI
Post by: sidthesloth on September 09, 2010, 09:12:48 AM
G'day All,
I recently ordered a cdi and it turned up today.... but, the wiring is different.
Mine has two plugs and the new unit has only one with 5 wires. My original unit has 6 wires between the two plugs, but the light green one can be discounted because it is for the rev limiter.
I am wondering if anyone can help with how to connect it up. The wire descriptions are below.
Stock CDI

main plug
green
black/yellow
blue/yellow

Second plug
black/white
black/red

New CDI
red
yellow
black
green
blue

Found out that the cdi is actually for a Honda Dio, which has the exact same wiring diagram as the ZX50. As the wire colours on the cdi are different I was wondering if anyone out there has a Dio and could possibly take a pic of the connector so I can see the location of the wire colours. If anyone could help with this it would be much appreciated.

Hey Sid, what's been up?  I'm afraid I'm not certain on how to attach the wires.  But I am definitely interested in your results!  I think I may need a new cdi for mine.

G'Day Shaka, long time no hear. I bought it from ebay seller scooter wolf pack. He says it won't work, but I say it must, they have the same wiring system. If I can get a look at a dio loom plug showing the wire colour positions, I can work out the rest. I am wondering if the wire colours on the cdi would be representative of the trace colours of the stock one. Trying that is a last resort, might blow something up.oops.:)

I was thinking it may coincide with the tracer color as well.  Don't want to fry anything though.  You might try asking over at scooterinvasion.net  There are quite a few guys with Dio's over there.

Yeah, I bit the bullet and signed up at scooterinvasion, I have asked the question, just wait and see what happens. I just took a couple of photos to put up. How is your scoot going? And, what about your Sea Doo? My scoot is going ok but is still holding out on me. When I put in the 6 gram Dr. Pulley sliders, I lost about 10 kph on the top end, I have just recently put my 7 gram rollers back in and regained that :) I am currently runnuing a 1,000 torque spring and a couple of days ago put in some 2,000 fly springs, and is now trying to take off in a weak spot, so will try rejetting. Apart from that I haven't been doing a lot of work on it lately, just riding mostly, too many other thing to catch up with.

After comunicating with the seller, it turns out that he was unable to help me, other than telling me who the manufacturer was. It was made by Ruima, a Taiwanese parts manufacturer. Looking at their web site it looks like they are a performance crowd. I have sent them an email, though I don't expect much joy. Here's to hoping.

I have received a diagram of the pin locations. Unfortunately I won't be able to try it for a couple of days. Will post results.

Thanks art, I see that is a 4 pin unit, mine is 5. The one the fella sent seems to be right with the exception of one pin in the wrong location, on the cdi, the top centre pin is absent, where on the digram he sent the bottom one is absent.

It may not matter the port may be linked for optional ground or something.

That particular one is to the ignition coil. I will give it a try some time ovep the weekend and report what happens. If it works, then we will know we have another option to the stock one.

Well, I couldn't resist, when I got home from work this morning I pulled the scoot apart and tried the CDI. No good, nothing, dead as a maggot. Now for the good news, it didn't damage anything so that is a bonus. Tried and failed, but as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I will try with another one, I am sure I will find something sooner or later.
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: art on September 17, 2010, 04:27:33 AM
You need a good diagram for the cdi. I think you just need to swap a  wire or 2. The zx and dio are vary similare. I got one barried in the shed(Dio) if i can get to it i'll try to get some pics for you,but i'm just to busy getting thing ready for winter right now.
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: sidthesloth on September 17, 2010, 04:41:38 AM
Nah, no need. Using the pinout I got for the Dio, I hooked it up using the ZX manual. The Dio's wiring is the same colour code as the ZX, just that this CDI had different coloured wires, (after market). I am now questioning wether the CDI might be damaged, because when I first got it, I tested it according to the ZX manual and got no readings at all. Won't stop me trying though. :)
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: art on September 17, 2010, 04:49:31 AM
;D  ;) Ya thats what you need is a diag. of the cdi. Back when i got the people all said just cut the green wire  :P It was the main wire to the ignition You get nothing if you do it. So a simple swap may do the job if you knew what all did. Of coarse the box do have to work first  ;)
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: sidthesloth on September 17, 2010, 07:35:59 AM
Hey art, from what you see here I know nothing about CDI's, but I am trying to learn. I bought a new digital multi meter to test it, but got no readings. I have just pulled out my old analogue meter and have got readings. Now, I am not sure, but I think I may have worked out which wire goes where. Not bad, 1 hour after putting scoot back together. :) If I get time tomorrow, I will try it again. I think that pinout he gave me was wrong, I reckon I had the ignition coil wire going to the off switch and off switch wire going to the ignition coil.
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: art on September 17, 2010, 06:23:06 PM
Thats what I was thinking(wires miss pinned). I suck at electronics, It's my week spot  :D I swap stuff till it works or burns  :o Lucky I have a friend that can read diag and give me a hand when really stuck. But if that cdi works for a dio it should work for the zx better than the modded one.

Nah, still here, I just tried a post and something went wrong, so will try again. Mrs. Sid loves dogs, well animals in general. She is a member of the local dog obedience club, she is the head instructor there. This weekend they are having a dog obedience and agility trial, I have been volunteered so I had better get my self down there before I am in the dog house. :)
Must go, will try a run later.

If you google dog agility, you will get a lot of results, but mostly they are hardcore. Some of the people are competetive, too much so for my liking, to me, a dog is a pet/ companion first and foremost, agility is some fun for the dog and handler, just my thoughts.
Must go.

Just to step back to yesterday, at lunch time I took the scoot for a ride. No improvement in riding, but I think it starts easier, though I wont be sure for a few days of normal use. But the main thing is that it does work, so at least I have a spare. It takes so long to get anything. So, $10 cdi, good score.

It's ok wordslinger, my post that went west was about the guilty/agility, but by the time I found it was lost I just rewrote quickly.
Cheers for the avatar dedication.

Post by: sidthesloth on September 18, 2010, 08:30:01 AM
Hey wordslinger, I guess that is your dog in your avatar? I know I have put up pics of our two before, but here is another. The older one with the black face is flash, Border Collie X Rough Collie, lovely temperement was ok with obedience but as much as she loved agility she didn't do much as her sisters were pulling up with hip problems, so she didn't get to do much of that. With collie in her she is quite stubborn, she will do what you want her to, as long as she wants to. :) The one with the 1/2 white face is loki, she endures obedience because she has to, she seems to think it is boring, but she loves the agility, very active dog, yet can also lay back quietly.

WoooHooooo! It works! Congrats, sid! You did it!!! You can add that one to the list of compatible parts from other scoots. Wow, that's some nice looking doggies you got there. They look big enough to step on my little one's head and squash her like a bug, lol. Hey, if you ever get a sidecar set up I wanna see a pic.  :D

Yeah, dogs are nice companions. With CDIs, it seems that there are two types, ac or dc. In the case of the zx it is ac, so I can now look for one with a performance timing curve. Then, I just have to spend a little time with a meter to work out where the wires go.

Yeah, $10, they call it a racing cdi, but I think that is just sales talk for no rev limit, anyway, it's in and i go back to work today so will see how she goes on a slight down hill run, if she don't go past the fuel gauge I will have to start again. :)
Title: Re: ZX50 CDI
Post by: sidthesloth on September 22, 2010, 06:32:59 AM
After a couple days use, I can say the cdi was worth it. Though there is no performance improvement that I have noticed, it does start a lot easier, success. Today I went back up to a 130 main jet and took out 3 7gram rollers, cant really say if any better, had a head wind on the way to work. The k&n filter turned up today, will pick it up tomorrow.

That is awesome, sid! I'm enjoying reading about your success. And that knowledge may come in handy if they start manufacturing different looking cdi boxes down the road for newer model scoots. Hey, I wanted to mention that when I was looking at exhausts the other night I ran across a place that throws in a free cdi with a purchase. I can't remember right now which shop it was. But if you are ever ordering another part you may just get you one for free to balance out the cost of your shipping and all and have another spare on hand. I don't know if googling "free cdi" will pull up that store or not. Google shopping isn't what it used to be so I tend to search in some unusual ways when I'm looking for the best prices on things, but if I come across it again I will let you know the name of that shop.

Yeah, just thought I'd mention it sid, so you could keep your eye out, cuz you might be able to get one with anything you might order, not just an exhaust, if this is the time of year some shops will be trying to get rid of older inventory to make room for newer items.  ;)

Yeah, thanks for looking out, but I think I had better keep my head in a little and just stay with the smaller items. I will pick up a filter tomorrow, that will cost 59.95...ouch. I was going to buy some heavier Dr. pulley sliders, but I saw a post on scooterinvasion about increasing the weight of the existing ones, so that will be a fun thing to play with, for a short time, unless it works. :)

Okay, sid, finally got the pic from my friend's daughter's cell phone in email today. I think she got more of the car in the background that of the scoot, but she did manage to get all of the dog. Here is the little doggie on back of the scoot. She's probably too young for scooter rides...too hyper, won't sit down...lol. She did try to turn sideways, though, when we stopped for the pic.  :D

G’day all, it is a little late, but I see I have not put in the correct colour codes for the CDI. So here is the belated update.
The manufacturer is Ruima and the model is New Racing CDI (TZR50)

Scoot                          CDI

Black/White                   Black
Black/Red                      Red
Blue/ Yellow                   Blue
Black/Yellow                  Yellow
Green                             Green
