Title: Xciting 400i coolant change help
Post by: AlexisStarlyn on September 22, 2018, 06:46:47 PM
I attempted to change the coolant, as it it is starting to get cold (and it gets to around -40F here).
I thought I did everything correctly, but now the engine temp meter is maxed out and blinking.
Any idea what I messed up?

I've not changed mine, so just guessing.
On other's I have changed, after letting it run just enough for the bars to start showing, I shut it off and checked the level again. Always had to add some.
Same with car. Repeat the process UNLESS you didn't add some, then it should be good.

Again, I haven't done this with mine or any Kymco. This is my first Kymco. But if I'm wrong, maybe this will get someone to chime in.

You got me..

We're still in the 90s during the day, dropping into the mid-70s at night.

Do you have the service manual? If not, I can upload and link to the appropriate chapter.

Just let me know.

That’d be very helpful! I’d appreciate it greatly

E.T.,
 That's a nice looking manual!
Where'd it come from? Who makes this manual?

Besides making sure the level is full, make sure that the system is thoroughly bled. But probably not in that order, since a full radiator is likely to spill everywhere while you're trying to bleed it.

I've got the entire manual, but it cost me something like $50 at Cyclepedia.

I can upload one or two chapters at a time, but not the whole thing, as it's far too big.

My proposed solution for -40 weather: 1. before it gets too cold , drive the scooter to a friend’s house who lives in a warmer area. 2.Pay him something for his trouble and stay with him until spring. 3. drive back home. 4. Repeat next year. [emoji23][emoji23]

Wow, just the mention of sub freezing makes Alabamians panic. Any forecast mentioning snow and we shut everything except emergency services.
Yeah, I joke a lot, but this is the truth!!!!

You don't need to change your coolant? Your bike is new? For the winter you may want to go to a lower viscosity oil such as 10/30. This way the motor my spin a little faster when cold. I would use mobile one synthetic. I use 10/30 winter, or 15/50 summer. You can find 10/30 at costco for a cheap price. Walmart stocks 15/50 mobile one.  :-*

sissymary, at -40 F, the coolant will freeze in you don't use a higher concentration of antifreeze.

For future reference. In the case of a new vehicle, it would be unnecessary to change the antifreeze. With a small system that a scooter has, all that’s necessary is to drain SOME of it and top it off with Pure antifreeze. The factory protection of 50-50 provides protection to -35. So you won’t have to drain and replace much to protect it to a much lower temperature . If you don’t drain much, You won’t need to bleed the system then. You can get a tester for a couple of dollars or so to confirm the freezing point.

73 this morning 92 for a high. If you could bring enough cold to give us a 60 degree morning and an 80 degree high. I’m sure I could wave the payment. Lol.
