Title: Kat Needs Help :D
Post by: Nireen on September 21, 2018, 12:53:50 PM
This last trip I could not get the bike past 120 and at full throttle I am getting a wee kick back or resistance.  Kinda like a hi-cup :) I cleaned the air-filter and the at the garage said to try that first no change and than suggested the spark-plug.  Anyone of you have this issue happen?
Missed ya all! :D
Kat.

What's it like going up hills? If it is more sluggish than usual, could be cvt needs looking at. Rollers worn perhaps.
Or alternatively the belt needs replacing as its width has  diminished due to wear.

More details about the hiccup might help. Is it at WOT, or does it lurch at some spot as you open the throttle? Does it recover?

Air filter and spark plugs are regular maintenance items that you should have been keeping up with anyways.

If you're going to sequentially go through all the things it could be, it could take a while and be expensive.

The best thing would be to access the EFI data and see if it's trying to compensate for lean/rich conditions, which should immediately put you on the right path. If you or someone you know has the means to do this, anyways.

Say, your bike has a tachometer -- what's it get up to at WOT?
If it were a transmission issue where it can't "upshift" enough, the engine should still run at full speed.

What is WOT?  All I no it won't go past the 120ish mark and I use to get it to 135 easy full out.  Not now.  And while I am at the 120 I can feel this kick back and resistance.  It is annoying as it comes and go's so I just let off the throttle.  I use to pass everything not now!

WOT = wide open throttle, full throttle.

Next time you drive full throttle, take a look at the tachometer and see how high it gets, and whether it's jumping. It should help point you to transmission or engine problems.

OK will look at that.  The tachometer is not the speed meter correct but the other one beside it?
and YES I am always at full throttle when this happens.

Searching read outs from the EFI is not a home fix for any of us.
Kat what is your mileage on the scooter and on the CVT parts (belt and rollers) and spark plug?
Lets start with simple things.
Engine speed is shown on the other dial....not the road speed one. Is the engine still showing the same speed you had at 135?

Stig, 25000ish Km's on the bike now and nothing has been changed except for spark plug.  I just checked the plug and it was slightly loose so I changed it and tightened it as best as I could and tried it but still is doing this.  I checked on the belt last year and it looked in good shape. I am not certain but I recall the engine dial about about 7 or 8 and I think now it is higher but I am really not sure on this!!! I never was really watching this in the past to much.

Take look at your owner's manual. ....25000Km might be about time for a new belt, and/or rollers.

As belts wear, they get less wide, which lowers possible top speed. A fresh belt will be wider....and you might find that lost 15Kph. Check validity of this with your mechanic.

Definitely get rollers (or sliders) as well,  so you can do both while you've got the CVT open.

Are they pricey, I know the belt is about $120!

Rollers are cheap. Sliders are a bit more, but wear better.

I wonder now how much of a problem this will be for me to get the parts from the garage here??? There is no more dealer in Canada now!  Can other brands work?

I will bet in 25000 kms the "Puke Tube" is full! Find it, drain it and put the plug back in it! The nasty stuff in the tube won't burn. Located at the front of the CVT cover, black plug, finger spring retainer. Squeeze the spring and slide it up the tube, pull the plug carefully. Stuff stinks like gasoline and other things unrelated to fresh air. Draining may not fix your speed problem but couldn't hoyt!

YES I usually drain that and did last year but will check it!

The Kymco brand belt for your scooter will give you a correct fit and another 20000km.
Do a google seatch for kymco parts sites...to check prices and shipping to you.
I order from kymcopartsmonster.
Makes sense to replace the rollers while you're paying to have the belt fitted.
May not be anything wrong with your scooter. ...it just has some consumable parts which need replacing.

I am in PEI Canada can any of you recommend where I can order these parts myself? Belt, Rollers, Sliders etc.  It is gonna cost me more due to the exchange rate to :( but nothing I can do now that there is no dealer in Canada and that sucks :(

Seller quotes $19 to USA....what do they quote to Canada?
Maybe phone post office and ask about customs on a $90 part from Taiwan.
Partsmonster is showing $180 for your belt.

Dr Pulley is a reputable maker of both rollers and sliders. It looks like the size you need is 20x12, 15 grams (8 pack).

You might see if this place ships to Canada:
http://www.epfguzzi.com/kymcobiz/parts/scooter_transmission.html (http://www.epfguzzi.com/kymcobiz/parts/scooter_transmission.html)

They typically have their inventory in stock.

That's the one! Tea or tablespoon indicates it was not full and affecting engine running. You now know one thing your problem is NOT!

I am guessing now your belt wore narrower. Bet it is skinnier than 24 mm. I had the same, original rollers in my first DT300I at 20000 MILES and they worked fine.

Yeah Karl I clean this pretty often.  I changed the spark plug and cleaned air-filter so I imagine it is my belt now. :)

I'd guess that the belt is worn just below spec. And any top speed drop off should have been gradual. Was it?

I've heard of people getting flat spots pretty quickly. I think it depends on how you ride. Worst case, if the rollers still look pristine, you'd have some on hand for the next belt change.

In any case, the kickback/resistance described at full throttle sounds more likely to be something engine-related to me.

It did not seem to happen gradual Hypo.  I took the same road trip in August and it was fine and than took the second trip in September and it started doing this.

In my experience, the best belts for scooters are the originals.
Aftermarket ones even Malossi, their belts are a little outside of the original Kymco specs. So that is not ideal.

Original is best at this stand point.

Kat needs a belt! badly! LOL wowzer.  Just came from the garage took off the covers and the belt had a couple chunks out of it! LOL lots of cracking to.  So does this reveal how hard I am on it?

I had one like that but the ventilation was stopped up by mice packing seeds in the cover blocking the intake. The CVT runs hot anyway so, yeah, you may ride too hot!

Karl should I clean those little filters in there? one on the outer casing and one on the belt case?

The garage said I was lucky I didn't get stranded on my last trip!

20x12, 15 grams (8 pack)  So this is what I need to order for rollers?  If so I will let the garage know this to help them out. They can't find in their books.

Kat, if the filter in the aluminum belt case is dirty, cleaning should be vewy, vewy carefully done! Elmer Fudd says that foam tears vewy easily! Dint know there was a filter in the plastic CVT cover...

Kat is shocked when I just heard that Kymco dealer wants $9 a roller! really! geeez! The air filter is $40 bucks to. Tell me do you all think I will have to change the rollers now or can I get more time out of them without problems?  I am at 25000kms.

Not sure what size your scoot takes, but full set of Dr Pulley slider weights run $30-$45. Riders here can advise correct weights to reproduce stock performance.

ROllers should last excess of 25000kms. But have a look at them, as long as there are no flat spots, you're all good.
