Title: Transmission oil?
Post by: YagerMeister on August 06, 2010, 08:22:18 PM
What kind of oil are you guys using in your Kymco's transmission?  My Yager specifies straight 90 weight oil, but that's practically impossible to find.  My scooter dealer has sold me some Motul 75w90 gear oil, which is actually what I would probably pick, but what's the consensus?

That's strange. You can get 1 liter of 90W for 10 bucks where I live. Will last longer than the scoot. :)

Everything in the bike shops around here (and there aren't that many) are multiviscosity gear oils, same thing for the auto parts stores.  Closest I can get is good ol' Valvoline 85w90 gear oil from AutoZone. (I'm in the southeastern US)

I would use that Valvoline and would not lose sleep over it.

I have two bikes, S 200 and SYM HD 200, and both have different gear oil specs.
So I read up on it. If the second number is 90, that seems to be all that matters. At least as far I can tell.

You can get straight 80 or 90W gear oil in the boat section at your local Wal-Mart. I comes in a "toothpaste-esce" tube and larger bottles.
