Title: 2018 Super8 50x derestricting CDI?!!!
Post by: itsjyung on August 15, 2018, 09:24:21 PM
Ok just bought a new 2018 Super8 50x. I noticed that the cdi plug is a completely different type than say any regular old Agility cdi as I have one (2013). How can I go about derestricting the one on the new Super8. I have a kymco derestricted cdi for the Agility but the plugs like I said are not the same! Anyone derestricted a new 2018 Super8 50x?

Honest answer.

We just don't know. We mostly have older bikes and 2 strokes. 2018 is to new to this forum. Looks like Kymco is doing its best to prevent derestrictions on top of that. You can try and disconnect a wire or two in a non destructive manner  provided you can plug it back in. Getting a different CDI maybe. But its a brand new model and I think Kymco hurt its 49cc sales by doing away with the 2 stroke scooters so not to many forum members have the newer 4 stroke Super 8 scooters. And I only know of one that has the 2018 4 stoke scooter and thats you.

Thanks. Yeah I can agree with the older 2 strokes. (Kicking myself in the a$@ a bit). I did find a couple derestricted CDI's online to buy that are pricey I may try the purple wires that I saw someone else talk about in another post. I will update on what I find.

I have a 2015 4 stroke

There was a purple wire (purple w/ red stripe} that I just removed from the wire harness.  no more RPM restriction

I have a 2018 super 8 50 cc. Just got it and did vb. Looking in to rolling wrench stage 3 kit for 650 usd. Are they any good? What's their reputation. Now I'm getting top speed of 37 mph and decent acceleration, but I'm also a big guy.

I also have the 2015 4 stroke super 8. I was thinking of buying a derestricted cdi, but 2015 is not a popular year for this cdi. Does derestricting this model give it uphill power? I live in a hilly city and consider uphill power more important than greater speed.

kunstler, what is your top speed on level ground and what is it going up a long hill?

To my understanding a de-restricted CDI can indeed make a 50cc faster - on condition that at least the carb needs to be upgraded as well.
Aparently an unrestricted CDI will only allow higher Rpms on the engine, but the carb’s OEM jets will be too small, will restrict feul supply, and will not allow the engine to reach much higher Rpms.

But that’s not all - you’ll probably have to modify the air intake on the cylinder head as well.
It might be cheaper to buy a scooter with a bigger engine.
