how do you tighten the mirrors on a 2014 300 downtown

Well, there are two "tighteners" on DT mirrors. Which one? 1. Where mirror assembly screws into the handlebar, or 2. The pivot after the assembly is mounted.

i can see that there are nuts but it looks like you would need a very thin walled socket to get it in there.

Don't physically twist the entire mirror assemble around to try and tighten it. You'll end up snapping the wires that run under the upper sleeve that power the turn signal. If they do snap it's easy to fix, but better to leave them undisturbed.

What Wolf said as a very important precaution. Don't even think socket on this one! That nut takes a 17 mm open-end wrench. Be vewy, vewy careful not to damage wires!

The way I did it on my X400i was this: I carefully disconnected the turn signal plugs from each other, and then screwed the mirror stalk into the handlebar socket. Then, I tightened down the locking nut with a 17mm open-end wrench to the point that it was snug, but not overtight. Then I reconnected the plugs. There is also another locking nut at the top of the stem where the stalk goes into the mirror housing. That one is hell the ruggedest mile to get adjusted, because it takes two hands to hold the mirror housing from moving while you're snugging up the nut. I only have two hands, so I enlisted my lovely spouse to hold the housing while I did the locking nut.
