Title: "No insurance required!" in Florida ??
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on December 16, 2017, 03:33:27 PM
Reads the instagram comment for the new Kymco 400 scooter, offered for sale by a Boca Raton, FL, scooter shop.
Insurance is not required in Florida?
I don't  understand....

Heck Stig, a couple years ago I looked into it since I wound up buying an S200 down there.
"Mopeds" don't require insurance, but the usual rules apply to call something a moped.  You can do the "Post a Bond" thing if you want.  Not sure how the numbers roll on that.

WA state other hand, does not require insurance on motorcycles at all.
As a result decent coverage is cheap, but you do have to keep an eye on what is & isn't in your policy since they'll "forget" stuff like PiP even if ya ask 'em.

It will need to be insured or it won’t get a registration.
You can fake a card I guess but that’s the same everywhere.

Insurance laws are different state by state. Here's a site that lets you see each state's insurance requirements. Apparently there are three states that do not require motorcycles to carry insurance.
Note also that the definition of a scooter or moped varies from state to state and that insurance requirements and license requirements differ by moped/scooter/motorcycle. Here in North Carolina sub-50cc scooters and mopeds have only recently started having to be registered and insured.

49cc or less is not required to be registered, licensed, inspected or insured in Texas. This is a bit of a grey area as the proliferation of bicycles with gasoline motor conversions are a bit of a problem in College Station, Texas (home of Texas A&M). Kids with such conversions are disobeying the regular traffic laws and riding around like a bunch of wild banchees and are unsafe. The law there has been cracking down and issuing speeding tickets and those for reckless driving. 30-40mph on a bicycle is way too fast with such minimal brakes, inferior tires and the lack of lighting is scary.
