Hello everyone, i have been reading this forum for a while now and finally registered and this is my first post! I am planning on purchasing my first scooter from my local dealer and am not sure if i should go with the xciting 250 or 500?? I plan on city driving with an ocassional trip of 250 miles on the freeway up north! I am about 215lbs and will have my wife on the back on the freeway trips and she is 160lbs. i ask you all for some advice on this one? can the 250 cruise at 70 mph??? I thank you all so much for any feed back!!

250 can certainly cruise two up @70-80+ mph. Last summer I did 300 mile trip two up on P250S.
My personal opinion is that I would buy 500 only if I got extremely good deal, or second hand.
Scooter is not a motorcycle and for everything above 250-300 cc max, I would prefer a "real" motorcycle.
However, that is just my personal opinion. If you can afford 500, go for it.

Hey mrj welcome to the forum,I havn't riddin the bikes personally,but in general the 250 will be a little more nimble in town and keep up easily,for two up and longer trips ,you may want to look at the weight load limmits,if you plan to carry some extra gear,might be pushing it a bit.The 500 will be at home on the freeway and the extra power is always nice.If its your first bike I'd look at the smaller one if you have been ridding for some time either would be a good choice.

Urbestfriend started out with a 125. Then jumped to the 250 after 2 or 3 years of riding.
I commented in another thread regarding speed. I totally enjoy the 250. I have had it on
a couple of 60 mile trips. However, as stated, 62 mph is a good crusing speed. Around 70
and above the tach. starts into the red area. The second advantage I see is the larger
wheels which offer better stability. Being heavy and not long legged. Those are the only
things I do not admire. The headlight pattern is fantastic after dark and the 4 way signals
are good. I ride 50% after dark. Long trips with a passenger ? You'll extend your durability
with the larger engine. If there's no difference in the seats though, anything over a hundred miles
could be a challenge.

If it's got to be one of these two bikes, get the 500. I've ridden two up at the weight limit of 330 lbs. on my 500 and thought the acceleration left something to be desired. Keeping in mind I have ridden many more powerful bikes. I love my Xciting and it's fantastic around town with just me.
The weight limit for the 500 has been stated here as 330 lbs. so you are over that already with no luggage. Might not matter but I'm just sayin, ya know.
mrjlube, what's your riding experience? Dirt bikes? :) Love them too! Welcome!

Yes, my riding exp. is only with dirt bikes! i use to race when i was younger! I am leaning toward the 250 but i just don't want to be saying in a few weeks "DARN I SHOULD OF GOT THE 500" lol ya know what i mean??????

I don't know about scooters but with a bike I wouldn't be using a 250 for two up open road use.

..the 250 will not carry 375 lbs with any sort of decent performance...
..it would not last a year's worth of the type of riding you describe...
..i'd say the 500 is your ONLY option...

Ditto, Wordslinger. I started to say these kind of things in my post but cut them out cause I didn't want to sound too much like a spoil sport. Actually, mrjllube, I don't think even the 500 would be all that good for the freeway trips you envision. Around town or one up lightly loaded, yes it's great! But, loaded down it just doesn't have the passing power or power to get out of the way of the honkin, racin, type of speed crazy drivers we have on freeways here.
It would do the trip, yes, but for me, it would leave me with that old feeling of wanting more power. It's just my opinion and I hope others will chime in on this if they disagree.
I know you've got your hopes up, but I thought it'd be right to give my take on this now before you jump in and spend the $$. Why don't you try to test ride some other bikes as well as these. Is it at all possible you could get two? Something smaller for daily use and a bigger touring bike for your long hauls.
Maybe there is some bike or scooter that would satisfy both conditions well. How about the Burgman 650 or Honda Silverwing? Check the load limits. Anyway, I wish you well in your decision!

..wasn't aware of the performance of the 500 with that much weight...
..i ride my daughter on my a50, and together we're right at 300...
..i'd just hate to see mrj plop down a bunch of cash, then think he's bought a piece of crap 9 months down th' road..
..maybe a big scooter, though less expensive than most cruisers, isn't the way to go..
..i'm assuming he's in the states from the language he is using..(lbs.mph)..so the 700 isn't an option..

Whatever he buys, he will not be satisfied after a few months. At least that is what happened to me and all my friends who bought any bike.
If you drive 1000 cc sportsbike developing 170 hp, you will start noticing it does not deliver the power as smoothly and in ranges you would like it to deliver... : ) : ) ;)
250 cc is enough for short trips two up, 500 cc is more than enough, but no scoot is a bike and (I, personally...) cannot enjoy driving the scoot as much as I can enjoy driving a sports or naked bike.
Catch 22: riding two up is much more comfortable on scoots: when I had both Piaggio Beverly 200 cc and Kawasaki 750 cc I actually preferred riding two up *on a scoot*.

Your are exactly right, Axy. And I apologize for being kinda negative, mrjlube. Yeah we all always want more once we're used to what we've got. ;) Please don't take what I said to mean the 500 would be poor at freeway touring. It wouldn't be.

I had a grandvista 250 for 3 years, not a highway machine at all to me! Took me 3 years to put 2000 miles on it! Two weeks ago I got the Xciting 500, almost 500 mile now and happy as can be! Not sure about the 2 up part yet. My sister wants to ride pretty bad, but not comfortable trying to ride 2 yet.... Did have her sit on it with me just to see how it feels and that putting the weight at 380 lbs.... well you know what, just sitting I did not notice the differance (except I could put my feet flat on the ground! ha ha ha) once I do ride two up I will let you know!

Oh and it is a personal opinion on motorcycle vs scooter, I would never get a motorcycle over a scooter as I enjoy the twist and go wayyyy with power wayyyyy to much!! ;D to each there own ^_^

With 1000-1300 cc bikes you can "twist and go" in 6th gear from 50 km/h to 300 km/h.

If you are comparing the 500 and 250 XCITING, I think I would prefer the 500 for extended 2-up riding. It will have the power to confidently move two riders (with luggage) in a speedy and confident manner.
I have the P250 and I am a "2-up" single rider and the 250 will get me to 80 MPH but will slow to 50 on the big steep mountain climbs to Tahoe. The difference between the 500 and 250 , in the Xciting, is mainly the engine difference. The 250 is lighter but has less power, the 500 is heavier with more power. The frame is the same, the wheels are the same. You can get ABS on the 500 and can't on the 250. Once you are moving, there is not weight difference.
I am all about confidence when I recommend a bike. Yes, the smaller one will get there but will it do it confidently? The 250cc Kymco's (all of them) are a great size for in-town use and some touring. The 500 is better at the freeway miles and for two-up. I don't think the 250 is any more or less nimble in-town when being powered by the engine. When you are moving the bike without power, the 350 will be easier.
