Title: 2008 Kymco MXU 500 ATV wont start
Post by: The Colourguy on December 13, 2016, 06:17:28 PM
I am having ongoing issues with my Kymco MXU 500 ATV not starting....
Keeps fouling up the spark plugs... It runs great for a while & then for no apparent reason it just won't start (no spark)...
Does anybody know how to fix this issue once & for all??
I have had it fixed several times but it does not stay "fixed" for long & you never know when it will leave you stranded....
Any information on how to fix this ongoing issue would be very much appreciated!!

Try venting the gas cap.

Hey Karl,
The gas cap has a vent hose attached....
I will check tomorrow morning to insure it is not plugged but I think it is OK....
Someone previously told me that it had the wrong size fuel injectors (or something like that), but if that's the case it was built that way originally....??
Any other suggestions or thoughts would be much appreciated!

Mike

disconnect the fuel line and measure the amount of fuel it pumps, possibly a clogged fuel filter causing inadequate pressure

If you stop getting a spark it would be something electrical.

Hey Terry,
You would think so right...??
It has been an ongoing issue & my last mechanic told me that the injectors on the motor were incorrectly sized causing them to burn out the plug (or something like that)....
Now he could not & would not guarantee that if I paid him the replace the injectors this problem would go away (as it would have cost about $500 to repair), so I told him not to do anything....
I am struggling with the notion that the factory installed injectors were the wrong size & that even though I bought it used it is a 2008 machine & why would this all of a sudden become an issue...??
After speaking with a spark plug expert I was told I might be better to change up the spark plug for one slightly different (something about engine heat or something).... as you can likely tell I am no mechanic so most of this stuff does not make a ton of sense, but I am semi retired now & have to try to repair things myself as I do not have the money to keep paying a mechanic unless they can actually fix the problem (then it may be worth the money)...
Anyway, it was -25c outside today so I will have to wait for things to warm up a little before I can work on it, but any more suggestions as to what the issue might be would be very helpful....
I will post any resolutions I find....
Thanks again!

Mike

A 2008 MXU 500 is fuel injected? I would have thought a carb on those years. The NGK CR6E is a one step hotter plug. If you have a carb you could have trash sticking your float flooding the carb. Easy fix, just time consuming!

I am thinking something electrical, loose/dirty connection, coil, pickup coil, ground wire, safety switch ie: side stand, battery cables/connections, not sure. Fuel related will not keep it from getting a spark.

If it is sporadic, could be difficult to track down. All I am talking about is the no spark issue, fouling he plugs could be unrelated.
