Title: THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR WITH MY DOWNTOWN
Post by: Nireen999 on September 30, 2016, 11:49:30 AM
Hey ya all :) I am wondering something. I have almost 9000k's on my Downtown now. I took three fairly big trips? this summer and may do yet one more before the harsh cold comes here in Canada. What should I be aware of if any issues with the bike. What should I be checking on the bike to make sure all is in good shape. I know tires, brakes, oil, bolts/nuts but is there anything else I should be aware of? THANKS!

Fuel treatment if you are gonna park it for the winter. Ethanol gas does weird destructive stuff when it sits for a month or longer. Lots of posts on that. Keep cats from using your bike as a perch. Put a cover on it to keep birds from making deposits. Keep the battery in the house if parked in an unheated area. Visit regularly even if you cannot ride!

I dunno if the Canadian authorities grit their roads in the wintertime, but if they do, the only advice I'd give is to hose the scoot down regularly.

Nasty stuff grit. Gets everywhere.

Oh yes lots of crap salt etc.  I do try to only take it when the road is fairly decent and only go to the grocery stores not long rides.  Yes for sure will rinse it down.  My post though is more on things to look out for when one gets so many KM's on it and what can possibly come up that needs looked at.

I think De-dee is the high miles rider on the DT300i at nearly 50000 miles. He may have some input. I think keep the oil and filters changed, valves set and don't crash that machine should out last you!

Use a battery tender if possible. I've found my battery gets sluggish in the colder temperatures.

OMG LOVE ALL OF YOU! CRACK ME RIGHT UP HERE.
Well I been doing regular oil changes every 2000 km's and I am getting the valve's set tomorrow here and I actually talk to my sweet-heart when I am riding letting her know I LOVE HER FOR REAL! I even pet her/him. YUP all good here.  Loads of love for my bike. :)

Yes OK Wolf I agree and will do just that.  Shall I put in on like over nights here during the winter will be very cold.  Or just plug her in a couple times a week? What would you suggest thanks :)

If you can attach the tender without removing the battery I'd say plug it in. The model I have has a light that changes from red to green when fully charged. When my bike has trouble turning over when I hit the start button, it's a pretty good sign that the battery may need charging. That's always during the winter months when I haven't ridden in a few days to a week.

A battery tender or maintenence charger will keep the battery near 100%, you can leave them plugged in.

Kind of off-topic here but I wish they had named the scooter something different. Everytime I hear the name, I think of Petula Clark. Or is it just me?  ???

It could be worse. They could have called it the Uptown...... And then you'd have Billy Joel  in your head.
