Title: Dirty Variator

When I took apart my variator to replace the drive boss I noticed that the roller ramps were very dirty and grimy.  Is this okay?  Should I clean this out with a paper towel or is it lubrication for the rollers?

Clean and lightly lube.  If rollers are flat spotted, then replace.

the way i understand it, that is only dust from rollers and drive belt dust.. mine had same inside it, i just blew it out.. i havent put any lube on the rollers, never heard that one, maybe some graffite lube on drive boss itself

..variator rollers are self lubricating..

..clean any grime from the variator with a spray electrical contact cleaner..

..cleans well, dries quickly, and leaves no residue..

..lightly grease the kick-start mechanism and repack the clutch when you ever dis-assemble it..

..other than that, introduce no other lubricants into the cvt..

Don't use any graphite on the rollers/sliders?

I have used dry molly. It never seemed to make a difference. My last set of Malossi rollers were swapped out at about 12'000km of service, and were still round. that was w/out lube.

I think it depends on the brand/type of roller more than an across the board need. Malossi rollers do not appear to need lube, but many other riders swear by some type of dry lube. I think it depends on the set up

..i tried a dry moly in the ramps...i think it might have made a difference for about 20 miles..
