When I came home from work the day my new boss told me no more parking my scooter in a corner of the warehouse....I told my wife, "Well, no more monkeys jumping on the bed!" I guess.
A very few weeks later I gave my two weeks notice to quit.
There were about nine things which led to my decision to quit after nearly 30 yrs with the State.....but that was one of them: "No more monkeys...." after 7 (four women and 3 men) different bosses this new guy was ....
Never mind. He's history.
I did make it a point to go around the 250 employee agency on my last day and say good bye and tell certain folks thanks "for brightening my day" every time I passed them. I was 4th down from the top on the seniority list...... so I knew a number of folks to thank....but also thought it looked like a jr. high school had dumped off a bus load of new employees.....all of them wearing jeggings riding up their butt.
(whatever happened to the dress code?!)
so I told Tonto, "let's blow this joint!"

I "get" all of the above "jeggings" and I applaud you noisily for TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT only you said it nicer! Jeggings, however, mystifies me.....

Stig, I know What you mean. I've been a state employee for 26 years and feel like telling them to " take this job and shove it " Unfortunately, can't just yet. These young kids coming in today, want top pay and do as little as possible. Nice scoot, by the way. Forza?

One of my son's, a late Bloomer, went back to UT Austin and got his degree in his middle thirties and upon graduation went to work for the State of Texas. I asked him how he liked it so far and seems like I heard some disappointment in his voice. He said everyone is lazy and doesn't want to work and all the old timers are morbidly obese. Looking down the road 20-30 years at his job, he's already stir crazy and doesn't like what he sees. There's no commitment to excellence, something he prides himself on. He's got a challenge if he continues in this vein.
On the other hand, I've been self employed nearly my whole life. I started out cleaning houses (yes, men make good house keepers too) and then became a handyman and 40 years later a general contractor and home inspector. I've missed out on all the paid vacation, perks and benefits of working for the gov. or large corporation but I love my freedom and incredible flexibility. If I want to take a trip somewhere and take a month off, I do it. But mostly, I love the constant change of scenery of the job and people. Nothing boring about my job.

Regarding State agencies:
I never walked through the lobby without thinking that I am stupidly blessed to not be sitting on the other side of that client counter....trying to find some assistance or a job in this county. I see fellows much more skilled than myself sitting there.....not looking for a hand-out, just a job.
There are good people working everywhere - including State agencies.
But the most professional people I ever worked with were during my two stints in the military medical field.
That was truly the last time I saw leadership in action.
I know my perspective is probably skewed. In wartime there are very fine people to be found in dust-off helicopters, evac hospitals and small, infantry units. An unusual situation where the good float to the top.**
After that arena - It is a tough to live with - but common feeling - of having 'peaked' professionally in one's late teens. I was a good medic. Who knew?

In medic training several instructors stated: "You know, if you're a lousy medic who never payed attention in training, and get assigned to an infantry unit - the only way they have to get you replaced with a good medic who knows his stuff - is to shoot you during the next fire fight."
I aced every class!

Forgive me if I have transgressed and denigrated all gov. workers as all are not slackers. My son said he did work with some really smart people. I've had my challenges being self employed with the hard to please customer sometimes and I usually have to work on my own responses to the challenging client. Once I was working for two professionals with doctorates who were super picky and absolutely drove me crazy. Funny how some with fancy degrees and titles think they're an expert at everything, including my job as a carpenter. I could have quit in frustration but I told myself I was going to make them my best customer....and I did. Everything is about attitude, including working for the man.

I am 57 and work for a large overnight package delivery service. It is a different world than 20 years ago. Now it seems that most corporations and businesses have just become a bunch of soul-sucking bureaucracies run by people who have been educated beyond their intelligence level. There are those who continue to fight the good fight, because that is who we choose to be. Its tough sometimes though.

Like you I went the way of being my own boss and have consulted for the past dozen years. When I have to deal with complete idiots or difficult people I just remind myself if that is what they want so be it, it's money in the bank all the same.

Guess I'm still a youngster at 55, but I am taking early retirement from teaching this June and not looking back. I have been in education for 32 years, and I am lucky to work with fantastic colleagues, but the kids are becoming absolutely unbearable. Things have really changed, and I can tell you for sure that a lot of parents are not doing their job raising their kids right. I do consider myself very lucky to have a great work environment and support from my admin, as well as a retirement pension. Still, its time to move on and discover other things in life...all on my scooter.
