Title: People S 50 4T speed and performance
Post by: chemicald on May 31, 2010, 03:23:30 PM
Hello everyone, I'm the happy owner of a new 2009 people 4T and love the ride.

I would love it even more if i could raise my top speed; the shop I bought it from told me they de-restricted it, I do 55-60 km/h instead of 45 km/h (transport canda restriction), but  I would love to take it out of town on country road and to do so 70-80km/h would do better ! I've talk to them and they explain me that the only way of getting more speed would be a engine upgrade, else is more of a money waste. Reading you guy's on the forum passing the 45 mp/h !
I'm thinking, yeah !

Thinking I'll use it for long ride (50km+) to get to work, I'm not a racer dude! ( people is more comfy than racy! )
What's your recommendations to reach for more top speed
I've read on the forum:
de-restricting the boss drive ( I don't even know what is the boss drive is, any how-to guides? )
Muffler restriction ( and I don't look for noisy mod! )

Anything stock, I'm willing buying extra parts.
I need more experimented tips and advice from experimented rider.

I've got good mecanics skill,
it's my very first scooter!
And I think i've choosed the best one, really, me and my girlfriend just can't stop using it together !

Thanks reading me !

Hello Chemicald,
I live Montreal area and i also have a People 50S 4T 2007. Mine is de-restricted, i have 5.1G rollers weight inside my original Variator.
My top speed on a flat road, no wind i hit 72~74 km\h!
Soon i'm going to buy a other Variator. Me to i chack for 80cc kit, on Ebay i see some kits under 200$!

Vermi! :)

Vermi has the right idea. Lighter rollers, and stiffer fly springs on the clutch will add some pep to the bottom end, and a k&n type air filter, w/ a larger main jet should get you another 5mph on top

Merci Vermi !
Did you get the scoot in MTL ? What is your shop ?

I haven't got time to check my CDI yet.
So just with 5.1g rollers, how much was your speed improvement, from the stock ones ?
Do you know originals weight  ?

What is the boss drive mod, I'm trying to figure out what is the boss drive exactly !

I want the scooter to be faster, but yet, reliable!

I'm thinking of a k&n filter, is this problematic under the rain ?

By the way, do you know with a 80cc kit if I need to change my stock exhaust ?
That looks like the mod !

thanks!

http://webservices.motorsportdealers.com/parts/partImages/KYM/2/03/05/0017.Gif (http://webservices.motorsportdealers.com/parts/partImages/KYM/2/03/05/0017.Gif)   Part #22105 is your drive boss. It has a shoulder on one end that has to be machined flush or the boss can be replaced for about 30.00 US. An open element filter is no problem in the rain unless you are riding in a monsoon, and then the ignition becomes the real problem. I think you should stick around a bit more before jumping into a cheap ebay 80cc kit. I promise you the scoot will self destruct, and you will swear it was the scoots fault for being a cheap piece of Schtuff. There are several high quality kits available for the people, but none of them will be under 700.00US dollars complete. You will need the kit/exhaust/jetting/rollers/springs,and good rubber to get what you want. The scoots that are doing 75+kph, have more in them than you think. Start w/ the cvt, as it will give the most bang for the buck.

I' d never go for a cheap engine !
Totally agree !

Do you have a part store to refear zombie, and/or parts you would go for.
About the boss, is there a mod part or it as to be machined in a shop.

thanks for the reply dude!

I have been dealing with Malossi USA On Line for several years, and from what I have heard they are closing shop! I'll do some looking around for a good kit, and price for you. Right off the top of my head I would be looking at the Malossi cast iron (durability), Polini corsa (good power at a usable rpm range), or the Arisol aluminum (best price for an aluminum jug kit. Moped hospital may be a good place to look at the arisol, but I think they are fairly high priced. Scooter works is a good resource, and scootertronics has the worst rep, but they do have good prices if you want to wait, and wait, and wait some more. There are several pipes that can be used, and that choice is really up to what you want the scoot to sound like, Everything from an open bullet type to expansion chamber designs are easy to find, and fairly well priced. Do a little searching, but try to stay w/ the proven brands, and don't be tempted by the cheap stuff.

check out sip scooters they have a few kits under $225usd polinni was the only one I recognized. There a good shop usually great prices, located in germany takes a bit for stuff to show, but i have had good luck with them so far.The sight is kinda slow and hard to navigate, but they got it all.

They truly do have everything. Shipping from anywhere to the US can take some time tho. Many times your 1 item will sit in Customs because of something else in the shipment.

I think I'll first go with a multivar variator from Malossi, it comes with 6gr rollers.
And I'll add a performance air filter.
I'm not sure I want to work around the carb and change the jet for now.
( or will it be essential according to my upgrade? )

Thanks for the referance guy's !
I think I've found a importator in Canada, makes things easier for me.
They import and distribute parts in Canada : http://www.itlcanada.com/ (http://www.itlcanada.com/)
Have a look, it's in canadian money, makes stuff cheaper for some people.

( or will it be essential according to my upgrade? )    Yes a filter will require jetting. Lighter rollers will also increase the rpm's (good thing) so up jetting is a benefit no matter how you look at it. (except maybe mpg's)  Check out http://jiangwayne.com/scooter/index.php (http://jiangwayne.com/scooter/index.php)   . The best of the best in my opinion. Honest/reliable/strong commitment to scooters/VERY creative designs/and centered in world class racing!!! Lucky for you they are in Cann-adia! They are functionally based in Tiawan so some deliveries can take a little minute. Its best to hit them w/ a big order of assorted parts so you don't have to wait over many orders.

I live south-sure of Montreal.
I buy used, only 2500km and it was de-restricted!
The other owner paied 500$ to de-restricted at the dealer...
Original rollers was 8.5G!!! :o

Last week i order 72cc kit and a variator from ENVIROMOTO in Usa.
In the kit a K&N filter, but i'm going to keep the original air filter, i don't want a noisy scooter...
It's around 10 days to receive the parts.
I give you news! ;)

Hi everyone, I'm new here!

I own a people s50 4t. Got about 900 km on it yet. Bought it new, a 2009. At around 500 km, got my first tune up. The dealer did something to the stock CDI unit. Before, top speed was an indicated 59 kmh (54 gps). Now, its 69-70 kmh ( 63-64 gps). Cool! But still, I find it somewhat lacking going up hills, slows down to 35 even 30 kmh in some cases. Too slow to be safe. So I ordered some 7 gram rollers.Stock are 8.5 gr. From what I understand, I should get better acceleration and thus, better climbing ability without sacrificing top speed, since the variator seems to reach its maximum at about 50-55 kmh. Whith a 7 gram it should reach it around 60-65 kmh. From what I read, the little engine develops its power at 7500 rpm and its torque at 7000rpm. Configured with 8.5 gr rollers, the variator seems to keep the revs in the 5000-5500 rpm range until it reaches its maximum at which point the revs rise to 7500-8000 rpm. Funny thing, fuel consumption rate went down the moment the CDI was unrestricted. Before, got about 150 km out of 4,5 liters of gas. Yesterday, got 165 km out of 4,0 liers. All in all, a great little machine, just got to fix the hill climbing thing. Its important, I live up in a mountain!

Hoping this helps anyone.

Wow the same weights as the 2t. I would have thought lighter. If you open that pipe up a bit and the air box you may be able to squezze in the 7.5g, Thats what ran on mine the best until the big bore kit. Ps Welcome to the forum!

Tried both. First, the air box. There is a significant collar that restricts air inlet. I removed it, but the engine does not seem to accept too much air.It chokes when you give it gas. Guess to do so, it has to be rejetted. Since the jet seems to be quite a hassle to get to, I'll wait before I get there. As for the muffler, I took it off. I read somewhere that there could be a sort of washer welded at the manifold junction. Noting. I dont believe the muffler is such a restriction on the power since the revs seem to go up there. Also, from what I know, 4 strokes are not as sensitive to muffler changes as 2 strokes, especially if you do not begin by a good top end job involving cam reshaping and serious carb tuning. And in the end, I do appreciate the quietness of the little mill. Makes it a relaxing experience. So, I'll stick with the roller change for now and see what happens. The store just called me yesterday to let me know they jus got those 7 gram ones. 3 days, not bad!

As for big bore, I did not get the little thing for that kind of use. Got it for my wife who enjoys a nice quiet relaxing ride to complete her regular errands. At an indicated 70 kmh, its got plenty of speed. Accelaration on the flat ground is even acceptable in urban traffic. Just want more power to go up hills.

Dont worry about the more power thing, my own bike is a Suzuki DL 650. I just love the little scooter in town.

Hey sid I missed your question. It can't hurt to try a hole or two,but the 2t's are desinged to have a bit more back pressure and the best thing for you is an expansion chamber(after market pipe) If you have one I'd try to tune to it,the stock pipes can clog up over time so a couple holes can help but nothing beats an engineered race pipe for a 2t.

Ha! not familiar with that one,if the canister is removable pull the packing out of it .The cheap knock offs don't spend alot of time on these things may have been wrapped wrong or hell just remove it and see what you get, it's just a silencer and probably the problem. The expansion chamber is what you need!
If you got the money the tecnogas rs2 seems to be the best out there for kitted bikes.
Title: Re: People S 50 4T speed and performance
Post by: sidthesloth on September 06, 2010, 09:09:38 PM
G'day art, this pipe is a sealed unit, the expansion chamber is in the header pipe, or so it seems, but having said that, it is not much of one. To look at the pipe, it is similar in appearance to the stock one, though the header pipe is far larger. I would like to get a Technigas pipe but, by the time I bought it and then add shipping on to it, I would probably need another mortgage to pay for it. When I got a quote locally (Adelaide, 400 km away) for a cylinder kit and other bits, the exhaust was over $300.

The after market one is worth opening up a little. A couple holes might set it right  ;) may even have a restricter in there. Sound like they got the header part right just need to tweek the rest

Okay, so I got my new 7 gram rollers last week. As I previously said, I saw in a workshop manual that the stock rollers were 8.5 grams. So I went on to took everything apart and installed the new rollers. Not a very complicated task, when you already have a compressor and an impact gun. So, i took the variator apart. I expecteted something bigger....man this thing is small! Installed the new 7 gram rollers, malossi ones, and mounted everything back together. Installing with the rubber gasket propoerly back on is, by the way, the most complicated and delicate part of all the work. Once done, evrything starts right away, no funny noises. So I go on. Man, there is NO change whatsoever in accelaration or hill climbing ability. So, I take one of the old rollers, set it on the electronic food balance in the kitchen and guess what...it weighs ...7 GRAMS!!!! AAARGH.

Ordered 6 gram rollers.

I'll let you know what comes out of it. As of the upside of all this, I am happy to report that working on those little machines is quite easy. Proof of it is the fact that I have been riding it for a few days now and I obviously put everything back together adequately. I had no previous experience on that kind of mechanicals before. Hope something is of anyhelp to anyone in what precedes!

I thought the 8.5's were a bit big for this model, you may want to run a 5.0g or 5.5g maybe order a set of 5.g's also can mix and match for a 5.5G total for testing .

To find out the originals were 7 grams would major suck. Now you have found out that these things are within the scope of anyone who wants to have a go with a little sense. It is all about trial and error, when you try the 6 gram rollers you will have an idea of the difference and be able to work out how far you want to go. With my zx, I found 6 gram rollers were the one, so I ordered 6 gram Dr. Pulley sliders, then I put in a 1,000 torque spring and that change every thing, I lost a lot of top speed, about 10km/h. I have since put my 7 gram rollers back in and regained that top, so I will order 7 gram Dr. Pulley sliders. As I said, all trial and error, and lots of fun. Just need to be patient sometimes. :)

At the risk of soundig a bit obtuse, what are sliders? Do they replace the rollers? are they those sort of cam shaped gizmos that can replace the rollers? What is the advantage of using those over rollers, if their weight is the same?

As for speed on mine, I believe going from 7 to 6 will not affect top end. Revs are now very constant at about 4500-5000 up to about 55-60 kmh at which point they start to rise till top rpm. at 70 kph. This would mean that the variator is reaching its max closing. Going lighter will only delay just a bit the closing of the variator  at a speed approaching 70 kmh instead of 60 kph. The advantage should be higher revs while getting there, thus being closer to the power and torque peak of the little mill.

Yeah, they eckon the sliders don't wear as much as rollers and the power delivery is smoother. Try a few weights and you will see what gives you the best results, let the fun begin. :)

I am somewhat fascinated with the expression '' power delivery '' when talking of a 4 stroke 50cc scooter. Somehow, the image of it does not coïncide with its realisation in reality....dont you agree? I believe the expression '' momentum gathering '' better describes the the way in which the little mill goes on about achieving its duties!

OK, so I finally got AND installed my new 6 gr rollers instead of the 7 gr originals. Remember, my dealer unrestricted my CDI. First thing, right off the line, I noticed higher revs before the clutch engages. Right after, I notice more willingness in the acceleration. A few seconds later, I live in the middle of a steep hill, I was reading 36-37 kmh where it used to read 30-31 kmh. So, up to now, much of the desired result is attained.

After that, I go riding on flat ground. Acceleration seems greatly improved with the revs seemingly much higher. After a while, I notice it gets much faster to 60 kmh, but then, acceleration tapers off to about the same as it was before but I still reach the same top end of about 68-69 kmh. I guess this is the most I can get out of the little engine while maintaining it stock. Remember, its a 50 cc 4 stoke and I weigh about 200 pounds. My wife, on the other hand, noticed more of an improvement, with about 50 or so pounds less. She find acceleration brisk and hill climbing adequate to the point of not slowing trafic down. She says she manages to keep at least 55 kmh going up hill where I, the fatso, only can only muster a miserly 35-40 kmh. So I guess I reached what I was aiming for, better acceleration and acceptable hill climbing ability for my wife so riding is safe in urban trafic.

I guess more power is somewhat possible, but seems more difficult. I'm thinking of changing the jet so I can get more air through the carburetor...but more work. We'll see...

Wow...55kmh up the hill is lookin' good. Now I'm curious how much you will gain when you change the jet too.

Vermi has the right idea. Lighter rollers, and stiffer fly springs on the clutch will add some pep to the bottom end, and a k&n type air filter, w/ a larger main jet should get you another 5mph on top

Do you have a model of air filter to suggest to me ??

Did you drill the holes in your 4T exhaust?
I was thinking that was a nice cheap upgrade, but also a scary one.
If you did drill the holes, what performance gain did you experience?

Got a 2007 people s 50 4t  cut the cdi and it goes close to 45. Seems to be a big difference compared to the 35 top speed it held. Hoping i don't blow my engine,as the high rev.
