As there should be. This disaster should have been planned for or the tower should have never been built. There is oil all over the lower Keys, and they are trying to keep it quite for now as there is soo much invested in keeping the coral reef system there alive, no one wants to speculate on the outcome. My guess is the Keys are going the be the next Love Canal.  http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/lovecanal/01.htm (http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/lovecanal/01.htm)

I am from the Panhandle Area and as of now our beaches are as pristine as ever. The water is blue and clear and the temp is 82 degrees. Again, as of today the oil is not headed our way but one cannot but help feel overwhelmed for those that are affected by the spill. I was never against off shore drilling until this happened but I am now.
Title: Re: BP
Post by: winginman on June 03, 2010, 01:01:38 PM
Apparently off shore drilling can be done safely, but it looks like they got greedy and sloppy in their work and the feds were in bed with them.  Someone needs to go to jail for a long time and not just one ether, this was a cooperative failure.  I now have concern that although it can be done safely it will be human nature to get sloppy and in spite of what can be done it will not be done properly, too much old fashioned greed.  I have never been a save the planet type, but I am now waking up and seeing the light.

I have never been a save the planet type, but I am now waking up and seeing the light.

You don't really have to be to hate this.

For 30 years, big business has spent billions of dollars convincing not just Congress, but the American people that regulation of all business is a Bad Thing.

Well, guess what?  Just how only a government can effectively defend against armed attacks on its people, only a government can effectively defend its people from greedy bastards who only care about the short-term money.

BP took shortcuts to save a few million dollars with this wellhead. In a just world, BP would be forced to liquidate to cover everyone's losses -- and I'm talking all the coastal communities whose economies will be wrecked for decades, 'cause we're talking about thousands of jobs gone for the foreseeable future in fishing, tourism, etc.

Fining them 10x what they were trying to save is not gonna cover the bill, here.

Well guess who showed up in Carrabelle... BP They are going to ALL the workers that depend on the gulf for a living, and IF you can show them you have been actively working in a gulf related business for the prior year, (tax records ect) they are giving $5'000.00 to compensate for any "INCONVENIENCE" their spill has /will cause. Every CRACK HEAD w/ a boat, or that swept the Motel parking lot is lining up like it's a soup kitchen. The Catch is you have to sign a release that states you will NOT take part in any civil/criminal suit either on your own behalf, or class action. I repair boats for a living, and do qualify for their wonderful public relations offer. I'm just wondering what the price of a soul is... Ps. Our "Mayor" accepted $140.000.00 from them to promote tourism in Carrabelle. There goes the Fu<king neighborhood!!!

That's a sad situation zombie, who would sell out at the first show? They certainly have some cheek doing that, but then, that's big business, trying to cover their arse. No concern for anyone else. Maybe your mayor should be standing up and saying no way, that just don't cut it.

The area here is mostly uneducated, and poor. I think you all know what I mean when I say "Paddle faster, I hear Banjo's" So it is a walk in the park for the Big City Lawyers. I could go out on a limb, and tell you guys more about life here, but I live here for now, and will bite my tongue. The point is If I don't tell the rest of you what kinda SOULESS BASTARDS this company is coming across as I could not live with myself. To think a few mill scattered about will potentially save the company from collapse, at the cost of one of the most fertile fishing grounds in the U.S. is purely evil in my humble opinion. The second bit is the sheep that are lining up for what just may prove to be the end of the life they have known for generations, in exchange for beer money! It really hurts my heart to see...

..beer money...y' know, what is 5 grand to a man that makes his living and supports his wife and 3 kids from th' helm of his fishing boat....5 grand indeed...why don't they just go ahead and give every person in the US 5 grand...we're ALL going to feel the pain of their actions...in our billfolds and pocketbooks....

Now your talking! My area is 98% 20' oyster boats, as the previous generations have wiped out the shrimp, scallops, snapper, and, grouper. The Oystermen are on the verge of cleaning out their stock as well, and BP KNOWS THIS! It's like buying a bottle of MD 20/20 to get the local drunk to paint your house. I don't mean to offend, I'm just breaking it down the way I see it.

This thread has gotten too f'n morbid for me. We (as a species) have turned the entire planet into a G.D. toilet. The biggest dilemma in MY life is; If I start shooting the bad guys, doesn't that make me one too?  I'm gonna talk to my ex-wife... Maybe that will cheer me up (after  this thread)
Title: Re: BP
Post by: griffon_j9 on June 16, 2010, 01:55:31 PM
morbid... maybe....  but ya do not have to go shooting people, mother nature will adventually thin us out with some type of flu or black plague sort of thing.... sure things will suck for a long time when that happens, but for the planet it will help.... (h1n1 was a test to show that there is really nothing we can do to stop that sort of thing?? )

1970.. only 3 billion people, 2010.. 7 billion and growing faster every year  out of those how many are good and how many are bad? and no longer do I say breeding like rabbits.... ohhh there breeding like humans.

as for our part.... to me we should be developing a way to take the hydrogen from water and using it as a power source..... stop bitching about the cost to convert and  develope the technology to do it effectively (ohhhh did I just found a path for NASA to take? instead of landing on a stupid asteriod ?)

and the oil spill.... dumb asses... that is all I can say.... I wish corporations could learn from there mistakes.... but greed is very blinding... just goes back to my first paragraph.

of course if we go the way of the dino... well problems solved DOH

had a had time deciding if I should even post .... maybe I should not of.. oh well

bah.... done thinking now, sorry for my bad spelling and being morbid and stuff..... going to go eat my fruit loops.

Forgot to fill you in on the local news... bp has given 2.5 million to Franklin county residents. There are 11'000 people here. 1,000 of them are oyster fishermen that have not missed one day of work due to the oil. They get 5.000 bucks each for lost wages. Another 10,000.00 for future wages, and 1,200.00 a day to keep their boats on the water looking for oil. So far 1 local Crack Head has died from partying on his loss of work $'s. forty or fifty trucks have traded owners, and the 2 bars in town have made a years earnings in 1 month. I stated there are 11,000 souls here in Franklin Co. Well there are only 2,500 in Carribelle. For me being a Yankee to begin with... This is like a party at the gates of hell! Wait till they have all seen what they have done here...20 years later, Alaska still poisoned from Exxon Valdex oil spill-2/2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HBBNhlMWBA#lq-lq2-hq)

This is consequence of neoliberal capitalism that was happily developing after Reaganomics (supply-side economy of 80s), and it happens all over the world.

For people in US of A it just became very apparent in recent years, but in some other countries, these inequalities were bad before and in the past years just became worse.

In the future more and more wealth will be in hands of less and less people.

There is a country that produces 40 % of oil used in US of A that practically floats in the middle of oil spill created mostly by Shell, around 7000 of them in the past 30 years.
Just one of them is 50 TIMES bigger spill than Exxon Valdez.
Around 150 mil people live there, which is roughly half of the population of US of A.
This state is called Nigeria, yet, you hear very little about what is going on in the delta of the river Niger.

We are all very sensitive to what happens to us and very insensitive to what happens to others.
Of course, this does not change current situation in the Gulf.

It is clear from the last sentence that you realize this is not possible. The laws of physics are applicable here: you have to invest more energy into this process that the energy you would gain from hydrogen, hydrogen cell technology included.

Also, hydrogen is extremely explosive, volatile, and cannot be easily stored, transported and used in vehicles.

p.s. I read that in the next 10 yrs we can expect real change of general level of food prices + 40 % because of usage of certain plant cultures for fuel.... not nice...

Post by: zombie on June 16, 2010, 11:31:33 PM
That has already made an impact in florida. Corn is grown year round. They have found they can charge more per ton to sell it out of state to fuel plants. Soooo the price per pound has tripled at the market. Nothing like a double whammy to keep prices rising. Another fact about the crude from the bp well. It is not fuel grade oil. It is the oil that plastics are made from. I am waiting for the national increase in fuel prices to contradict the facts.

You are completely right! Like axy pointed out there are worse problems in other parts of the world, but it doesn't pay to cover those stories. In fact I will dare to say there may be some $'s trading hands to NOT cover many of them. If only we all knew what was really happening... Fact: Russians have had MANY under water well leaks. They literally explode the sea bed, and let nature close the leak. bp I believe needs to keep the well active for profit, and is not willing to abandon the site. It is apparently more cost effective for them to handle it the way they are. Throw billions at the feds, and retain control over the site. Blood money

Guys, do not forget two things.

1. It is quite possible that somebody (either Shell of Exxon Mobil) will take over BP entirely, or gain a significant share in BP owner structure, especially if BP will be pressed hard to create 20 bln US$ fund for damage reparations.

2. Cleaning is a BIG BUSINESS. A lot of money will change hands here and do not forget that an army of "contractors" will come to the site and shores to do the cleanup operation. Of course, that money (earnings) will be concentrated in hands of other multinationals, mostly American-owned. This will not help the population living on the shores of the ocean that will receive 5000 US$ or so in compensation, but this is in line with economic redistribution of capitalist way of production.

This is the world we live in.

There are things that simply cannot be done, or at least they cannot be done in efficient manner. Using water for propulsion of vehicles is, at current stage of science development, just as likely as using nothing to achieve the same. In science, this is known as "empty hypothesis".

.....BP  is a British-based global energy company which is the third largest energy company and the fourth largest company in the world. A multinational oil company ("oil major"), BP is the United Kingdom's largest corporation, with its head office in St James's, City of Westminster, London. BP America's headquarters is in the One Westlake Park in the Energy Corridor area of Houston, Texas. The company is among the largest private sector energy corporations in the world and is one of the six "supermajors" (vertically integrated private sector oil exploration, natural gas, and petroleum product marketing companies). The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

Since the 20 April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, in which 11 people died, and subsequent oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, BP's public standing and stock value have dropped substantially, losing nearly half of its market capitalisation. The disaster, involving a leaking deep water oil well, has devastated a vast area of the United States marine environment, killed marine life, and had a serious impact on the local fishing industry. Efforts at containing the spill...well..whatever..

...BP was named by Mother Jones Magazine as one of the "ten worst corporations" in both 2001 and 2005 based on its environmental and human rights records. In 1991 BP was cited as the most polluting company in the US based on EPA toxic release data. BP has been charged with burning polluted gases at its Ohio refinery (for which it was fined $1.7 million), and in July 2000 BP paid a $10 million fine to the EPA for its management of its US refineries. According to PIRG research, between January 1997 and March 1998, BP was responsible for 104 oil spills. BP patented the Dracone Barge to aid in oil spill clean-ups across the world....

In September 1999, one of BP’s US subsidiaries, BP Exploration Alaska (BPXA), agreed to resolve charges related to the illegal dumping of hazardous wastes on the Alaska North Slope, for $22 million. The settlement included the maximum $500,000 criminal fine, $6.5 million in civil penalties, and BP’s establishment of a $15 million environmental management system at all of BP facilities in the US and Gulf of Mexico that are engaged in oil exploration, drilling or production. The charges stemmed from the 1993 to 1995 dumping of hazardous wastes on Endicott Island, Alaska by BP’s contractor Doyon Drilling. The firm illegally discharged waste oil, paint thinner and other toxic and hazardous substances by injecting them down the outer rim, or annuli, of the oil wells. BPXA failed to report the illegal injections when it learned of the conduct, in violation of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

In August 2006, BP shut down oil operations in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, due to corrosion in pipelines leading up to the Alaska Pipeline. The wells were leaking insulating agent called Arctic pack, consisting of crude oil and diesel fuel, between the wells and ice.[63] BP had spilled over one million litres of oil in Alaska's North Slope.[64] This corrosion is caused by sediment collecting in the bottom of the pipe, protecting corrosive bacteria from chemicals sent through the pipeline to fight these bacteria. There are estimates that about 5,000 barrels (790 m3) of oil were released from the pipeline. To date 1,513 barrels (240.5 m3) of liquids, about 5,200 cubic yards (4,000 m3) of soiled snow and 328 cubic yards (251 m3) of soiled gravel have been recovered. After approval from the DOT, only the eastern portion of the field was shut down, resulting in a reduction of 200,000 barrels per day (32,000 m3/d) until work began to bring the eastern field to full production on 2 October 2006....

..In March 2005, BP's Texas City, Texas refinery, one of its largest refineries, exploded causing 15 deaths, injuring 180 people and forcing thousands of nearby residents to remain sheltered in their homes. A large column filled with hydrocarbon overflowed to form a vapour cloud, which ignited. The explosion caused all the casualties and substantial damage to the rest of the plant. The incident came as the culmination of a series of less serious accidents at the refinery, and the engineering problems were not addressed by the management. Maintenance and safety at the plant had been cut as a cost-saving measure, the responsibility ultimately resting with executives in London...

I think you are mixing up socialism with communism. Those two terms are not synonyms, yet they are usually used in the same sense.

You'd be lucky to live in a country that has well developed social network governed by the principles of socialism (for example, Scandinavian countries, Austria, France, Germany) because you would enjoy high standard of free-for-all healthcare, education, state pension system, direct participation in representation etc.

For example, student credit was unheard of in my country until recently. I have received my B.Sc. without paying a cent (yet, you had to have good grades). Now, they are introducing payments for education on all levels after high school, just like in USA...

Do not forget that a few months ago a health-bill was passed by Obama touted as a big thing, while some countries most people could not point on a map have had state medical care for all for the past 60 years, my country included. Stories about most developed and influential country in the world not having medical care free for everybody sounds barbaric to most of us from "small" countries overseas, but it is a reality, and a consequence of neoliberal framework. The paradox is that with recent crisis and lack of funds, those countries have started approaching ex. US neoliberal model, while US is privatizing banks to save national economy and introducing social measures!

So, remember, "socialism" or at least, capitalism with strong social network and human rights is quite positive thing and most advanced system of democracy we know while neoliberal paradigm usually ends up in bloodshed and redistribution of capital and money from poor to rich (case studies: Chicago school, Chicago boys, monetarism, Milton Friedman, Chile, Bolivia, Australia, South Africa, ex. USSR in 90s, Poland, Iraq, Afghanistan, N.O. after Catrina and Asia after tsunami...)

I suggest to read a bit on the topic:

1. Milton Friedman, "Capitalism and freedom" - he pretty much agrees with you
2. Naomi Klein "The shock doctrine" - she pretty much disagrees with Friedman and you
3. ... and finally, read what Mr. Lyndon LaRouche thinks about neoliberal paradigm in "The ugly truth about Milton Friedman".

You might be surprised to find out that Mr. Friedman is actually in his freedom-in-everything approach taking Mr. Hjalmar Schacht, Third Reich's Finance minister as a role model in his theories. Neoliberal doctrine you are preaching is in fact, and surprisingly, tightly connected with paradigm of fascism. I watched quite a number of documentaries on that topic and realize that except late Mr. Charlton Heston, most militant supporters of "extreme freedom" usually live in rural US of A, their mother is usually also their wife, wear checkered red-black T-Shirt and stock up cellar for second coming/war against "lefties", whichever comes first.  :) ;D ;) :P

Regarding US of A, it has never been "free economy", you are being preached the wrong fairytale your whole life. Too much freedom, and you have recession and economic disasters due to inherent inclination of human beings to maximize their own profit at the expense of others. New institutional economy is dealing quite in details with this phenomenon and several prominent US economists have recently received Nobel prize for economy in this area.

The first case when US government has stepped in was at the beginning of the century when in 1911 US Supreme Court ordered Standard Oil to be divided to 34 different oil companies with different boards of directors in order to stop monopoly on the market.

Furthermore, read the Declaration of independence where it says that nobody will have to pay taxes to the government *and* the only legal tender is gold, and central bank (FED in your case) will not issue paper notes.

Ever heard about US dollar? How come it is legal tender when Declaration of independence explicitly forbids it to be issued?

The last example of need for state intervention was TARP and bailout program for banks and insurance companies that went bankrupt in USA due to worthless housing derivatives that almost destroyed global financial system - direct consequence of too much misguided "freedom".

Finally, market exists even in socialist countries (not that many exist today), it is not inherent characteristics of capitalism.

I might go on and on about false myth of freedom, but I doubt you'd be able to understand any of the arguments due to poor level of information accessible to you.
It is even more sad that you do not want to accept that "communism" and "socialism" are not equal terms. For example, fascism and nacism are both socialist regimes yet they have nothing to do with socialist states of Sweden or Austria today.

Capitalism is not opposite term to socialism. Nazi Germany, fascist Japan and fascist Italy were all socialist and capitalist societies.

Most things you are so concerned about are not even on 25th page of newspapers in countries around the world. For example, the right to have arms. If I wanted to have a pistol or a gun, I go to police station, ask for permit and if I am not a psychopath or ex. convict, I will get it without problems. If I am a member of a hunting club, I can get a rifle.

There is a limit to this, I cannot get a machine gun, RPG or chain gun even if I wanted to. I do not know who in their right mind would need any of these (except the guys I described above :) ).

Furthermore, it is a strange position for me to debate US economic and political system and history, considering the fact I have never been there and live across the ocean.

I second and underline your opinion!

It is simply a gross negligence and mismanagement (especially in terms of risk management) by the oil multinational company.

This is very prevalent these days because almost all oil construction projects are fast track and everything revolves around bigger profit margins.

There has never, in the history of mankind, existed a COMMUNIST state.

I assure you you have never experienced "free market", because it has NEVER existed, and especially not in US of A. The examples of "free market" were in practice created in the following countries: Chile, Bolivia, South Africa, ex. USSR and Poland (after 1990), and ended up after a few years with hyperinflation, military government, martial law, new elections, and return to previous economic model.

Ask citizens of New Orleans what they think about "free market" schooling and housing model exercised on them after Katrina.

I am afraid you have close minded and opinionated view of the world outside your own country. I do not know a country in Europe that has curfews, forbids personal weapons, loooking at other women, driving big trucks and going anywhere. I know very few countries in the world that have any of these.

You would probably be surprised that I can travel from my country to the Atlantic ocean even WITHOUT passport, just by showing my ID card at the nearest border (no borders after that, similar to US states).

i guess thats why people from other countries COME HERE to live, to get medical treatment, to be free cause they have soooo much there in a socialistic country or a communistic country..

Take a look at this movie:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386032/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386032/)

It will show you the standard of medical care in Cuba compared to the one in USA.

It is quite easy to get medical care if you can pay for it, but it takes a well organized society to provide it to those less fortunate.

I am afraid you cannot even comprehend that, God forbid, if I need a heart surgery or organ transplant, I will get it FREE OF CHARGE.
Yet, you might be suprised if I tell you that we pay 15 % of our gross salary for medical care. It is mandatory.
Further 15 % for pensions of those currently retired and at least 5 % for my own pension fund.
And income tax 12-45 % on the remainder.

The world is not the yard of your house, it is much bigger.
The world is not USA - USA is just important few % of world population.

Parts of China and Japan? Part of the country can have one social and economic setting while other part can have another?
I wonder what is with these other imaginary parts of China and Japan, what is their social and economic setting then? :)

I understand that you cannot grasp concept of free medical care for everybody, because, in all of your freedom, you have never experienced a social care network.

I guess that you also cannot understand why it is quite usual, for me, for example, to have at least five weeks of vacation days per year, or why sacked employee in Germany will receive 70 % of his average salary for the next 12 months from the state. Or that a woman after giving birth will be paid for one year to stay with the child and she can stay at home until the child is 3 y.o. and still keep the job.

p.s. USA does not have 10 billion illegal immigrants. Whole world does not have 10 billion inhabitants. World population is around 6.9 billion, USA has 0.3 billion people.
I wonder about your knowledge *before* your eyes were open.

p.p.s. You do not need anything to get to the Atlantic ocean because on both sides it is the same country. I do not need anything except ID card to cross several borders and states. Try to go to Europe, Mexico or Canada without passport and let me know the result. Where is your freedom now?

However, if you need them, kidneys are for free. So is university education.

I would like to notice that adequate amount of economic freedom has driven industry out of our countries, so we socialize on a forum of a far-eastern corporation! :)

We do not produce anything anymore, we buy what Chinese people are producing, and in case of US, sell debt to Chinese in order to be able to print money.

But they are free to do so! It's their free will!

It is impossible for consumer to "avoid" BP or any other major oil multinational's products.
If there are BP gas stations, you can avoid those, but still, oil that originates from BP's concessions or pojects is in almost all oil-based products, which is nowadays everything, from computers and pharmaceuticals to cars, various kinds of plastic products, fertilizers etc.
Furthermore, there is no "BP oil" or "Total oil", there are blends that are reference for trade, like West Texas intermediate, Russian REBCO, North Sea Brent Crude, Dubai crude or OPEC reference basket.

The world is unfortunately so globalized that calling to autarchy is technically impossible, with rare exceptions like North Korea (among the last ones, if not the last one, and even they have exchange with Russia, China and Syria...) Furthermore, ownership over oil companies is not national, but "multi" and "over and above" national, with significant percentage of ownership hidden and dubious (investment funds, hidden investors...)

I know it is an accident

No. It was not an accident.

It was no more an accident than if you purposely got your friend drunk and let them drive home.

People who worked that rig knew and warned that all the corner-cutting that BP and Transocean did on that well was not going to end well.

And for what?  To try to save a few million dollars. Now, they wish they'd have spent that money up-front.

..i saw a "60 Minutes" interview with one guy that nearly drowned, and swam away from the rig in a sea of burning crude...

..that was when i made this thread...

..he personally alerted transocean to the faulty blowout preventers...

My point is that you have to have your head up your ass to the shoulders, at least, to defend BP in this sh**.

And yes, we have plenty of Americans with their heads up their asses to the shoulders. At least 24%. The ones that don't know who we defeated to win our independence, and the ones who think George W. Bush was a great president.

This is no place to go into such details, but I have B. Sc in business economy, MBA in ICT business management and currently I am working on my ph.d. in Business Administration. (I am completing 1st year of 3-year doctoral studies after MBA at the local University of Economy).

Considering that I am interested in political economy and philosophy and development of economic thought, recently, I have been researching the "shock doctrine" of USA (and neoliberals, Chicago school etc.), war in Iraq, events after "freeing up" the markets in Chile, Poland, USSR, Far East crisis at the end of 90s, and produced a number of 70+ page scientific papers on the topic.

I am not getting that info from "screens", at least not while posting, I tend to remember and accumulate a lot of information along the way.

I have been also fully employed for the past seven years in one of the world`s biggest oil&energy multinationals in function of middle manager and have been working for BP as a client.

Also, I am quite interested in macro economy and oil&energy sector, so tend to know quite a bit about all these topics (unfortunately, there is never enough knowledge).

I could not answer your question better than jprestonian did.

In my daily work, I am facing so much non-professional behavior and corporative bs it is sometimes hard to comprehend.

Finally, I work for company in oil and gas sector, I am not their SHAREHOLDER. I exchange my work for money, to earn living.
That`s it, nothing more or less. Similar to prostitute.  ;D

p.s. BP is now in spotlight, but, trust me, there are companies with much worse corporate governance than BP. Much, much, worse. It`s just that spill did not happen to them (yet).

Hi, allegedly, it was just a few liters of those tar things, so they think it could be unrelated to the spill, but originating from some ship. US are lucky because it happened offshore, in the ocean. My country is a sea-side country, but the sea is almost a closed/locked system, with entrance that is 85 km wide at its narrowest point. If something like this happened here, we could pack our things and leave, as there would be no natural biodegradation, compared to the ocean, the sea is shallow, there are no streams/currents that would disperse the spill etc. Furthermore, my country is completely insignificant compared to US, so they would bother even less to fix it.

I wonder what exactly is doing RIGHT NOW, risk assessment department in BP.
