Okay, so i'm completely overwhelmed with the wealth of information that is on this site. However, i cannot seem to get a few questions answered by simply using search function so please don't kill me for asking a questions that has probably been answered already.
For my currently stock agility 50 2009, with unrestricted cdi:
1. What size jet should i be getting? 6mm? Should i go with #86? How do i balance air flow so that i don't run "lean"? How do i know if its running lean?
2. Where can I buy the variator boss in the US? I can't seem to find it by itself, but i see a lot of kits that include it! I just want the unrestricted boss!
3. Do i need to have an impact driver to install the variator boss? Would a regular wrench and elbow grease do the trick?
Thank you so much for your help!
-
Ok so i've figured out questions 2 & 3.
I found the bushing here http://www.partsforscooters.com/Drive_face_spacer_qmb139?sc=9&category=469 (http://www.partsforscooters.com/Drive_face_spacer_qmb139?sc=9&category=469) (thanks to dark13). Also called variator boss/ variator bush/ drive face spacer.
And i also found out i DONT need impact driver to get the bolt off from the variator. And that i should use blue locktite when reinstalling the variator (after putting in new boss).
Now if someone would tell me how to tune the carb via jet size and air filter, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
-
If you are not changing anything with the exhaust or air filter you should be just fine with the stock main jet. You only need to increase the jet size if you are increasing the amount of air in or out. By just derestricting the cdi and doing some cvt tuning you are not changing anything with the air/fuel mix. You can check your fuel mix by doing a plug chop, ie. reading the spark plug. You should be fine though!
-
In that case, what's a good air filter and jet combo?
-
You might check out Wordslingers posts. I'm not sure what jet he is running, but he and I are both running K&N air filters. I know his Agility tends to run bigger on the carb jetting for some reason too.
-
Cool, i just looked up how to do a plug chop. One question though, would you check it immediately after you hit the kill switch or could it wait til you run back to your garage/work area?
Shaka, also, i would love to see what kind of mods you've done to your agility and what your top speed is?
Thanks shaka! Btw, you've been extremely helpful!
-
No worries! I don't actually have an Agility. I have a ZX50 that's pushing 60mph, I've just hung around here long enough to learn the Agility pretty well! The basic principles apply to all scoots for that matter also! On the plug chop it doesn't matter if you wait to "read" it, but you have to pull the plug out immediately. Make sure you bring your "normal" plug with you to switch it for the ride back home.
-
...well, it seems the forum has been busy since i've been away...
..welcome, shubonker, to the best forum in th' world!!
..along with your derestricted boss, you should get you some lighter rollers...
..i'm partial to the 4.7 grams, but i think imma go to 4.5 when i replace these...
..it would benefit your scoot to go up one size stiffer on the main torque drive spring in your clutch...
..the stock spring is rated @ 750-800, i think...
..i'm currently running a white Malossi "1000" main spring, but I want to give a 1500 a try...
..also, you would benefit from some stiffer fly clutch springs...
..i'm currently running Leo Vince +15% springs...i've tried the +50%, but i didn't like how high i had to rev my scoot to get it going, and the 15s seem to accelerate better than the 50s...
..all these mods will make your scoot performe much better than the stock setup...
-
Cool wordslinger, thanks! Will order some springs later this week.
Any other mods i can do to up the top speed and accel? My ideal performance would be 45mph as a top speed and better acceleration.
-
..a free-flow air filter, as said below along with an increase in jet size...
..but those things in my last post will get you better than 45...and the lighter rollers and stiffer springs will make you go WOW on your take-off...
..i saw you ordered rollers already...
..what weight??
-
..a really good upgrade would be a Malossi Multivar variator....
..it comes with the 1000 torque spring, but it also comes with stock 6 gr rollers...which are too heavy...
-
I bought 5g rollers.
Will check out the malossi variator!
-
...you'll get a bit better acceleration with the 5gr rollers...
..i harped on 5.5s for a long time, til i got the 4.7s...
..and i believe the 4.5s an da 1500 main spring will give even better accel..
..it's all about keeping the revs up on these 4ts...
-
...aannnd imma say it again, because i've harped on it so much in the past...
...4t scooters require frequent oil changes and even more importantly...
;D
..here we go...
:o
...correct valve clearance.....
-
How do i go about adjusting the valves? I've already ordered oil for when i get my scoot back from the dealer :)
-
...do you have the A50 service manual?
..how many kms does your scoot have on it....
..what oil did you order??
order??
-
...i just read back...yours is new...
-
I think less than 100km last time i checked, sorry i'm a noob :(
And yes i do have the service manual.
-
..you won't need to adjust them for a lil while then...but when you do, the manual is pretty thorough in it's explanation....it's how i learned...follow the guidelines on valve adjustment and oil change for the first interval...then cut the suggested interval by at least 3/4...i change my oil @ every 500-700 miles...and dude, it needs it by then....
-
Wordslinger, thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it!!!!!!! I think i'm going to print out the entire service manual at my school tomorrow, i figured out where the clutch springs and the torque springs go from reading the manual. Lol!
Will get my scoot back tomorrow, and will do the upgrades to variator boss and rollers on thurs when i get the goods in the mail!
Thanks again!
-
..you're welcome bro...
..i hope they got your scoot straightened out...
..i got the manual printed out in a 3-ring binder, along with a bunch of stuff from this forum....
-
Apologies for the threadjack, but regarding rollers...
I've finally got the carb pretty good - it chops a nice light tan all through the range. However, gas it from a standstill and its not pulling clean all the way up to top speed. Given that it feels like its "upshifting" too soon (pulls cleanly up to max revs but then as road speed builds revs drop and rate of accel goes down then picks up again once it gets back up to mid-revs again) how would that be altered by messing with roller weight? or given that it seems to be road-speed related rather than revs related should I be directing my suspicion to the rear half of the CVT instead?
-
What's up scootcomute? You are right. Replacing the contra spring w/ an aftermarket/Malossi WHITE spring will make a world of difference. Your scoot is pulling top gearing before it reaches top speed. Thus the drop off. While you are in there the fly springs would LOVE to be changed too! Slinger has a good set-up so I would simply mimic his.
-
...yup, that's exactly why i want to go to the 1500...
..i have a malossi white "1000" spring right now, and i have kinda the same issue as scommute...though not nearly as drastic...
..also running Leo Vince blue +15% fly clutch springs...
..i wish someone else had an A50 with the 1500, so I could hear how it performs before i spend the cash for something that i don't like...
-
I'll be the guinea pig and tryout the 1500, since i can get the set of 1000, 1500, and 2000, for just $20. That is if i ever get my scoot back from the dealer. :*(
-
..20 bucks??
..HOW??...WHAT BRAND???

I'll stick with trying the white as a first step, because your scoot doesnt have a rev-limiter any more, mine does so I dont have as much top end as you do. I just want it to pull clean up to max revs and then up to top speed. My pull-away is acceptable at the moment, in my late 40s I've kinda given up the "smoke your a$$ off the line" games. Right now I have "plausible deniability" if some donut-deficient cop decides he's going to be a horses butt over my max speed with a "moped" plate.. I can honestly tell them that theres no aftermarket parts (they kindly supplied an unrestricted variator boss and a bigger main jet in the seat box when it came from the factory) "Its still limited officer, no aftermarket parts - I just tuned what I had" The contra spring is safe enough, it aint visible the way a slice into the CDI would be. Not saying I WONT do it, just not yet ;)
-
..my goal has always been to be able to utilize the draft off the cars in front of me, and have enough take-off power to hang with them up to 50 mph....
..there's very little draft up to 35 mph...

Usually this:
"Do you know how fast you were going, Sir?"
"Not a clue, this speedometer is so inaccurate, my rule is keep up with traffic if I can and wide open and keep out of the way if I cant"
"You were going X"
"I'm sorry officer but thats not possible - the rev limiter on this thing wont let me get that fast without one HECK of a wind assist downhill"
The two times its happened I got off with a warning.

Actually thats the Claudian Amphitheater in Sante, France. I was in the bleachers when that pic was taken. Right where I was sitting for that pic Romans used to watch fighters slashing each other to bits.
-
...and to get a little bit back on subject...
...you can still cut that cdi, and enjoy much better performance from your scoot up to th' speed limit....

S'ok, still don't have my scoot back yet. I called today, and they were working on it. So tomorrow is a definite.
Btw, those springs are here:

Probably a generic brand, idk.

...i was meaning the main torque drive spring...
..some refer to it as a contra spring...
..it's internal of your clutch, a bit deeper than those...
..those springs control the pressure each of the three pads push against the clutch bell...
..some call them fly clutch springs, in reference to th' Malossi Fly Clutch...which i want...
..the torqe spring controls pressure against your belt...and regulates how the torque driver in your clutch reacts...

Ah, i see, those are $20 each on scootertronics and they only seem to have the 1500. I may get this also, and report back to you guys. The fact that they only sell the 1500 probably means something?
http://www.scootertronics.com/cosp.html (http://www.scootertronics.com/cosp.html)
-
Quick question, to do a plug chop, do i need to chop off the threads? Or could i just read the spark plug the way it is without modifying it?
-
...you CAN read it with a good light, and possibly a magnifying glass to look further inside...to the firing ring...
-
So, i still don't have my scoot yet. I've been calling everyday and they keep telling me it'll be the next day. They're telling me that it's fixed and i can pick up tomorrow since they're closing soon. But seriously, for a simple carb adjustment, it really needs to take 5 days?
-
..i've been in several scoot shops around here...
..if they sell chinese scoots, then they're usually full of repairs waiting to happen...
..i reckon 5 days would seem not too out of whack....
...but that's why you, as a scooter enthusiast, must learn to affect these types of repairs for yourself....
..heck, we'll walk you through the processes...
;)
-
They mainly sell vespas, their name is "vespa soho" here in new york city. They have a small selection of Kymcos. Looking through their reviews, it would appear that they have tons of repairs waiting to happen, and only a few workers.
I probably could have cleaned out the carb myself. This is so insanely frustrating considering i purchased it literally last week.
-
...i know...but, hang in there...they're done and tomorrow's near...lol...
..there isn't a big bunch of ppl working on scoots in the states just yet...
..the demand for scooters is not as great here, as relatively, we pay much less for a gallon of fuel than most other countries in th' world...
..that will eventually change...
-
Yep, hanging in there lol.
I don't think scooters or motorcycles will ever be that big here in the U.S. This country's just too big and the people are too used to the luxury of their big Hummers and Escalades.
-
...true...sad, but true......
:-\
-
So i see you have your agility top speed at approx 59mph, hows the acceleration on that? Are you able to keep up with cars?
-
...with the speedometer offset that's probably mor like 54mph....and that was downhill in a draft under the BEST of conditions...
..i cruise along at around 80-85 kmh top speed on the most of days...
..if i can hang in the draft, i can maintain with 45+ mph traffic..
.. i can work a draft like th' "intimidator"...lol..
-
Yea i guess those big ol' hummers have their uses.
-
..hell yeah, gimme a cpl SUVs inna row...damn near as cood as a garbage truck...lmao...
-
G'day Wordslinger, you mentioned the price of fuel, for the fuel I use, the top level at the garage 98 RON we are paying $1.38 per litre, what are you paying in America?
-
...around $3.00 a gallon...for premium 93 octane...
..1.38 per litre?? ...that'd be over 5 bucks a gallon for you...
-
Yeah the actual price for the fuel is 138.7 cents per litre/ $6.24 per gallon
-
Wow, where is that Sid?
It's $3.24 per gallon for premium at this very moment because i live between two gas stations, lol.
-
...sid come fromma land down under....
..oh yeah-yeaahh...
-
Australia?
-
Cant you hear that thunder?
-
Nope! Lol.
-
Well, it's the taxes hitting the treasury.
-
It's $3.24 per gallon for premium at this very moment
..dang...$2.97 for th' good stuff here...
-
I got my scoot back and its better than ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They changed out my variator boss to an unrestricted one, now i have the one i bought on the internet and dont have anywhere to put it. And they also said they had to adjust the carb. My top speed on flat and slight incline appears to be 40-43mph. However, it does take some time to get up to 30, but that's okay, i'm about to swap out my rollers and put in a kymco race CDI ;D
-
...!!!~HOT F*CKIN' DAMN~!!!!...
...when you get the cdi and lighter rollers installed, you're gonna go WOW!!
..i'm stoked for you dude!!
;D

HAHA Thanks!

...looks EXACTLY like mine when it was new..
..except they changed the muffler heat shield..
..think they changed the shape of the airbox too...
..gotta get those "Guilty" decals off there...lol...
-
Lol, yep, just bought a bottle of goo gone for that very purpose.
Have you tried carrying someone on the back? If so, does it affect acceleration and top speed much?
-
...i'd also be interested to see how your 5 gr rollers perform in the stock variator...
..when i went with lighter weight, I also installed a malossi variator at the same time...sorta....
..the malossi was a goood upgrade for me...
..while i'm thinking about it, are there any numbers printed on the top of your carburetor??
-
...i wouldn't go two-up until you get it broken in....
..remember, you're still in THAT stage...
..but yeah, two up effects everything...
-
...let me re-phrase that...top end speed can be achieved, even two-up...
...takes longer to get there, but it CAN happen...
..me and my 11 yr old daughter ride together...she loves it..lol..my 17 yr old has grown to accept it...lol..but she WILL NOT!! ride with me...
..acceleration and the ability to maintain speed, on these A50 4ts, is dependant on wind resistance...
..less drag, better speeds...
-
Haha, your 11yr old hasn't reached that self conscious age yet. I'm going to work on the scoot a little later and take a look at my carb for ya.
-
...yeah, she starts middle school next year...i suspect the riding will stop this summer sometime....
-
...cool on the carb thing...
..i had CK50QT-5 on my original carb...
..i've been able to determine those numbers mean it's a slightly different build than some other A50s...
..translated from a cpl different chinese scoot sites i get the following...
.. "the engine is imported from Taiwan, Hsing new piston, piston ring, with the Taiwan imported carburetor, reducing friction, combustion, lower fuel consumption, "
..the boldface kinda explains why my scoot requires larger main jet sizes...i think....
-
hey word i have the exact same carb you do!
i wonder if we have the same build?
-
....awesome!!!!!!!
..finally another!!
..i'd say yup, dark!
-
oh btw im running 5grams with the stock variator and i have to say its awesome great acceleration good on hills but they wear out fast or maybe thats because i bought some cheap ones
-
...cheap rollers will wear out quickly...
..imma try 4.5 when i replace these...
-
I hope mine is the same too, then we can all join some into some kind of fraternity...
-
Hey guys, i'm having a bit of trouble getting the nut off of the variator to get into the rollers. Any tips?
-
...I use a pair of vise-grip vise clamps...lock them onto the o.d. of the flywheel, and use a socket and ratchet to break the nut loose...
..some use an impact wrench...some use a strap wrench..i suppose an old belt and a screwdriver might work....
-
yeah, thats a "whatever works" thing.. immobilize the crank and then get the LONG ratchet handle out..
-
I just went to home depot on my scoot to pick up these vice-grip clamps
http://www.irwin.com/tools/locking-tools/the-original-locking-c-clamps-with-regular-tips (http://www.irwin.com/tools/locking-tools/the-original-locking-c-clamps-with-regular-tips)
Will try em later, hope it works. My main fear is breaking one of the teeths on the drive face.
-
HELP!
Okay, so i got the vise-grip clamp from home depot and i was able to get the bolt off (with a LOT of effort).
I put in the new 5g rollers and while i'm putting the cover back on, i over tighten one of the bolts and it broke!!!
Half broke off and half is stuck inside! How do i get it out???
(On the plus side, i test rode it anyway and acceleration improvement was noticeable!)
-
If part of the bolt is sticking out you should be able to grab it with a pair of vise-grips and turn it out. If not then try a left handed drill bit or some EZ-outs.

..that's what I use, and you don't have to clamp extremely hard....though, i had to remove the adjusting screw completely...
..there are tools made to hold the flywheel...but I had those handy, and it just worked...
-
Half broke off and half is stuck inside! How do i get it out???
..like shaka said...
..sounds like another trip ti the HD...lol..
..get you some left-hand drrill bits....hopefully, the broken screw left a "flat" area where a drill bit could start...
...I've stripped the threads out of one hole on my scoot's cvt cover, but never broken one ??? :o ???
..they need not be that tight...
-
Thanks guys, i'll try the those methods.
I'm loving the 5g rollers!
-
I'm loving the 5g rollers!
..i knew you would....
..change them out for 4.7s next time you replace them....
..maybe 4.5s, i'll let you know, as i have some 4.5s coming...
-
Ah, do let me know! I feel so much more comfortable riding with traffic with the 5g rollers.
-
Buy a LEFT hand twist drill bit. IF it catches the stud it will simply turn out. If not it will be bored for an easy-out

....got some more ppl here since you've been away dude...
...some 2-strokers too.....
-
I just changed my motor oil at 100km. A bit early but o well. Says there is suppose to be some kind of filter? But i don't see it on either end...
-
..the only filter on the A50 is a screen that drops down from where you remove the hex-plug....
..it has a rubber seal on top of it...when you remove the drain plug, the screen comes out of the crankcase next....
-
You'll be just fine. I watched Water World last nite!
-
Crap... i didn't notice any kind of screen. Is it flat? Also, would i be ok without it?
-
...welllll.... it needs to be there....
..chances are, that it stuck to the crankcase....and it's still there...
..you got a copy of the service manual, shubonker??
-
Yep. I'll go fish in the bucket that i drained everything in, and see if its in there. If not, i'll just assume its in the crankcase. *crosses fingers*
-
...if you didn't see it fall out when you were draining your oil, it's most likely still up in there...
???
-
Or it Never was~
-
Or it Never was~
..yeah...or what he said...lmao...hope not tho...lol..
-
...shu, did you see if there's anything printed on the top of your carb??
-
Oh ya, forgot to check. I'll go look when i search for the mysterious filter in a lil bit.
-
...the mysterious disappearing screen.....
..i found parts of a small spider in mine once...
..reckon i mighta oughtta have wiped that funnel out a bit..........

-
..th' lil buggers (british) will crawl right up in there...
-
That's why we have a Lyme~ologist. DUH!
-
..can say buggers, but not f***ers...i dunno...
-
...shu, you DO wanna take a look for that screen at your next change tho....
-
...if you don't have one, you really need to get one...now i'm worried...
...OMG!!...
..if there are any machining slivvers left from the build, the screen should catch them....
..mine captured one, 1/16" square piece of flash...on the second oil chsnge...
..other than the dis-memberred spider, that's about it.....
-
You just said what you said you can't say...
-
...umm..oh..sh**!!! ....goddammit..... i f*** up like that from time to time...
-
Tssssk... Tissssssskkkkk...
-
Didn't see the filter in the bucket i drained the oil in, so i don't see where else it could possibly be but stuck inside. I'll double check on my next oil change.
My carb says CK50QT-5.
-

-
Hey my headlight is always on for some reason... Is that normal? Today wasn't overcast or anything and its pretty bright out yet its still on.
-
..that's the way they're wired...it's also the law that motorbikes must burn their headlights while running...
-
I See, i see.
Since we have the same carb, would it be safe to assume that if i get the same k&n filter and same main jet size as you, i'd be running a good fuel mixture?
-
...there's a good chance it would be close...
..elevation and comes into play too....
-
I'm pretty much sea level, how about you? Lol.
-
..i'm in the center of the state...NC....
..so imma bit higher than you...
..your air will be more dense than mine...
..dunno how much, it's not like i'm up in the mountains....
..probably not enough difference to matter...
-
I read that you found some I.D numbers on top of your carb. I went back and looked at mine to see if I had simular numbers but could not find any. I e-mailed a Keihin carb distributor and he said that he did not know what jets it took and that I wold have to remove the jets first to see what type I needed. Its odd, The markings simple say Keihin K T but the manual says I.D # PB058.
-
^ Guess you'll just have to read the plug?
Are you trying to replace the original with the same size ?
-
..the manual is just a "general" set of guidelines and info...
..there are different builds of scooters, and some things differ from year to year also...
..it's true, that you must phsyically measure out your jet to be sure what you have..
-
I want to know what my scoot has so I can start listing parts that I will need to tune it, jets are part of the plan. I bought it third hand, already derestricted. My next adventure will bo to remove body panels to see if the cdi was derestricted (already goes 45mph, 50 downhill) just to make sure. I will also take the CVT cover off and see what has been done in there too. Maybe I'll get lucky and have inherited some Malossi performance parts! :o doubt it but we'll see
-
...any parts other than the carburetor's jets will be pretty much the same across th' board..
..there a cpl different styles of cdi units, but i believe that '07-'09s are the same OEM...
..not to say that someone hasn't already swapped some things out...
..let us know what you find!!
peace
-
Hey slinger, what size jet were you running with the free flow k&n filter before before you swapped out your carb?
-
..i think i settled out with a 100-101...
..i battlled 30-40 degree temperature changes from morning to afternoon here...
..aaannd, i was learning a lot about carb tuning back then too...
..i'm running a 1.03+mm jet right now, so a 100 wouldn't be out of spec too much with the stock carb on the CK50QT...
..in my own experiences....
-
Alright, i'll start off with the 100 then. Maybe i can find a 1mm drill bit somewhere.
One question though, for plug readings, should i use a new one each time i change a main jet size? Or it wouldn't matter?
Also, another question, i'll need to take off the seat and stuff to get to the main jet right?
Thanks!
-
..you can use a new plug each time you chop...but you can get several chops, per say, from that plug, if you run your scoot for good long, consistent rates and distances between chops...the plug will change per your adjustments...
..so, i've found....
-
I have to take off the seat part to get to the main jet right?
-
..yeah you do...
-
Cool thanks. I'm waiting on my main torque spring 1500rpm, and my fly spring set 1000, 1500, and 2000. ;D
I think my next upgrade shall be the filter and main jet!
Then perhaps.... the exhaust!
-
...i wanna know what you get from the 1500 torque drive spring...
..your scoot should level out at a higher rev while slowing down, and give awesome speed recovery ability...
..i'm worried a bit by your 5 gram rollers...dunno if they're capable of letting your engine rev high enough at take-off, to be able to take advantage of the contra spring during acceleration...
..hhhmmm...
-
..you might want to start with the 1000 fly springs...
..if you have time to experiment a bit...find out what each set will do for your scoot...
..and let us know!!....
;D
-
Yes sir! Ordered from scootertronics, don't know when it'll be here. Hopefully soon, i'd love to get some better acceleration from take off.
-
...add a week to your ETA....
-
They're that slow? Damn.
-
..goin' on 3 weeks for my carb...that's where i got it...
-
...most places are gonna run longer on their delevery, than what they advertise...
..nobody keeps much stock any more, so when you order something, they gotta, in turn, order the part from their supplier...
..lean manufactoring....
-
Glad i didn't buy a carb then lol. How's that workin out for ya?
-
..it's a damned good upgrade...
-
..it came directly from taiwan...took a lil longer to get here...
..that was ok...i like it!!!
:D
-
Wallet fell out of my back pocket while riding the scoot today... :'(
Had my license, $50, registration, insurance card, credit cards.... :'(
-
....daaaammmnnnn...that sucks bro..........
-
Yea seriously. Chances of someone returning your wallet in New York are slimmer than an anorexic girl...
-
...cancel dem cards.....

I got them! Send me 2 hippie grasses, and 1 doguppie... Either that or a giant fire truck!
-
..i gots the grass, and i get th' doguppies, but....

Just in case "That guy" responds!

Some guy returned it today! My $50 was gone, but everything else was still in there, now i don't have to go to the DMV. At least some people care.
