..hey dark, how th' hells you runnin'?

well i have time to install the new jet and the new filter but.......

i was wondering one thing what is the small hose on the back of the air box that leads to the motor

what is it for and what do i do with it?
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 12:10:34 AM
...leave that open, just double it back towards the front of the engine and secure it so it don't flop around...

..it's the valve cover vent...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 12:12:06 AM
so i dont have to filter it any?

and should i have it angled a certain way?
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 12:23:44 AM
...naah...all that hose does is, vent the slightly positive air pressure from your valve cover...

..the pressure is created by heat, and the introduction of oil into the cam / valve area of your engine..

..basiclly it keeps your scoot from blowing the valve cover's rubber seal...

..just take it loose from the valve cover a cpl times a year, and blow thru it...

..and wipe around the open end of the tube from time to time just to keep everything nice and clean...

Just a gimmick! You can add a real oil can  http://www.amazon.com/CCAs-PCV-Oil-Catch-Can/dp/B002P4TIJS   The idea is to put this in series from the engine crank case vent, and into the air box. It will keep the air box clean, and allows any oil vapor to condense. The valve on the bottom is for draining any water vapor that condenses. No need for all this on a street scooter tho!

Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 12:35:34 AM
...who would buy that??
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: zombie on May 14, 2010, 12:38:02 AM
Mostly for pro race set-ups w/ lots of blow by from high compression engines. Airplanes use them as well.
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 12:39:36 AM
...i reckon the stock airbox setup kinda did the same thing, on a smaller scale...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 12:56:09 AM
so what jets are/were all of you running with the stock motor and free flow?
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:01:40 AM
..i would say, but it's gonna be  bigger than most, so......

..i will say that every scoot is different from the others...

...i would suggest starting at 84-86-88, or so, and do plug chops to verify what you have...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:05:06 AM
well i am just curious because i would think that it being a machine everything would be down to a science
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:09:33 AM
..that's fundamentally true...

..the science involved, is tuning.... to what your scoot needs for optimum performance...

..unfortunately, there is no "magic formula"...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:15:14 AM
true but what really effects it so much is it the conditions?  what kind of load it has to carry?

i am sorry if i ask alot of questions but i am a little ocd when it comes to learning stuff i don't just want to learn what works but i want to know why it works because sometimes that's what really matters
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:19:34 AM
...conditions is exactly right!!!

..there are so many variables to consider...

..quoting another setup may work for your scoot...may not...

..the basic principles of tuning your carb and cvt will hold true, no matter what conditions are introduced...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:22:40 AM
i am thinking given that i tend to run a little on the rich side that an 88 will do it

....i hope
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:24:45 AM
...that's a good starting point, but you need not "hope"..

...you can verify your setup by doing chops....
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:26:35 AM
lol im not gonna pray my way through it i bought 15 spark plugs just for chops ;D
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:28:04 AM
...lmao...i hear y' brother...i think that once you get th' hang of it, you'll hav plugs enough to last the life of your scoot!!!
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:29:06 AM
...you can use the same plug for more than one chop...

..the condition of the plug changes most drastically...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:31:29 AM
yea you can just clean it with i wire brush right?
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:33:32 AM
..wire brush...some carb cleaner and a rag...either or...

..but even without the cleaning,, your plug will change appearance from situation to situation...

Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:36:59 AM
...i've chopped a plug at idle, and it shows slightly rich...put it right back in, and haul ass down the road for a WOT chop, and it show to be lean...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:41:21 AM
im talking about wot
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 14, 2010, 01:46:23 AM
...if you're getting a lot of carbon...black buildup... on your WOT chops, then you are rich on the top end...

..you should drop a size on your main jet...

Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: Dark13 on May 14, 2010, 01:54:50 AM
i havent done anything to it yet i will be tomorrow

im gonna install my jet & filter then get cleaned up and take my gal to see shutter island

Basic setup is a science, tuning is the art, unfortunatly I am not an artist.

Still waiting... Still waiting...

...speaking of....z, send me those pics of your scoot again...my pc crashed shortly after gettin back online at home, and i had to reformat my hard drives....so, i lost about 5-600 pics, and yours was among them....i was damn near finished with editing one for too....sorry bro...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: zombie on May 19, 2010, 03:36:09 PM
No troubles Bro! There are a lot of photo recovery programs, Easeus data recovery does a real good job. It's easy to find on the torrents!
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 19, 2010, 10:02:14 PM
...yeah, no i had to completely format...

..ain't no recoverin' nothin' after that...

 :-\
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: zombie on May 19, 2010, 11:35:32 PM
I re format all the time! (playing w/ virus's, and such). Run any recovery 1 time, and you may be surprised! You can set easeus to look for just your picts, or recover the partition. It has saved me tons of hours re-installing software. It is the first program I re-install.
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 19, 2010, 11:36:50 PM
...i wonder, does it have to be present at the time you format??

Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: zombie on May 20, 2010, 12:43:59 AM
Does what need to be present? The photo's are still on your drive. they may be overwritten but they are there. You might just get them back w/ different file names, but they can be recovered, unless you used a drive wipe before formatting.
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: wordslinger on May 20, 2010, 01:14:51 AM
...does easus need to be installed, and have it's back-up image, before it can recover from a format...
Title: Re: oil catch can?
Post by: zombie on May 20, 2010, 02:41:26 PM
No. It uses that forensics stuff. It reads empty space first, and then reads data that is under data. As long as you never used a data eraser it will find stuff you forgot you ever had. I use a usb drive to recover to as it will bring up more stuff than my hard drive can store.

yep, slinger, he's right. When you reformat you dont actually ERASE anything. You write a brand new (but empty) top level directory on the disk and the control data - which provided you are using the same filesystem type (ie reformatting ntfs as ntfs, or FAT as FAT, not switching) always goes in the same space it did before so isnt going to touch your data. The recovery programs simply refuse to believe the directory saying "this space is empty" and go to look. There is, however, no guarantee that the new OS you install on your reformatted disk will be in the same areas of the disk it was in before the reformat - so you wont get everything back, just most of it. Any file where any part of it has been overwritten by the reinstall of the OS will not be recoverable. Just dont even BOTHER trying to recover progs, save the data and docs then reinstall the progs - it makes sure they actually have a consistent set of libraries and config data registered with the OS. After that pull your data and docs back in from wherever you saved them.

Just remember the more the machine has been used since the reformat, the less you'll get back... more specifically the more stuff you've saved the more of what was there before is overwritten with new stuff and gone. Thats why Zombie always installs the recovery software FIRST after doing a reformat/rebuild. Running it then is when you get the most stuff back. You can get lucky and pull something back months after a rebuild but your chances get real slim real fast. (yeah, I been geeking for a living the last 20+ years.. I've seen most of the ways these things can break)
