Title: ..blown air induction 1.0 ..
Post by: wordslinger on March 20, 2010, 08:37:55 PM
..okay, so when the weather turned cold, my scoot began to run a bit lean in the mornings, while okay in the warmer afternoons...

..i up-jetted and fashioned a warm air induction to my filter that took care of the problem...

..now, with temp climbing into the 70's, i find that she's running rich...wanting to "fall on its face" at top speed WOT...

..so I said to myself I said, "self, why don't we just leave that big ol' jet alone and make her breath in some more air?"...

..scary thing is, I answered myself, but that's a whole 'nother issue...  ;D

..well, i remembered zombie and shaka talking about tapping into the fan's shroud and I said, "hhhmmmmmm..."

..so I resurrected the old stock airbox tubing, and with a lil trial and error fashioned me a blown air induction...

...yes i did.....where's sibi now, huh??

...the results are far better than I ever expected...

..gained acceleration speed, 3-4 mph on flat land and topped my fastest top end speed by 2 mph...

..now, the top end speed I previously had was ridng in a line of traffic with a 15 mph tail-wind...

...this run with the blower was same road...but by myself with a 2 o'clock headwind....

..overlook the electrical tape and cable ties, as this is still in it's proto-type stage....

..but it's soon gonna be a permanent, FREE performance enhancing mod!!

Wow!  That is too cool man!  Like a sort of supercharger!  That's pretty impressive that it gave that noticeable an increase in performance!

...thanks man, yeah i was very suprised...

...i owe you and zombie a debt of gratitude...it was ya'lls idea..

...i just wanted to get rid of the rich condition....

..never woulda thunk it...

That is friggin Crazy Awesome!!! One note< that is unfiltered air. Get that sorted out, and I just may give the idea a try myself! 3ish mph for FREE. I love it!

...yeah, free!!! i know right!!!

..and it's not unfiltered, i crammed a 3/4" npt brass muffler inside the tubing, and sealed around the hex with more electrical tape...

..dude..it works!!!!
...the first time i tried it, was without the brass muffler inserted...
..that was waay too much air, stopped running as soon as i inserted the tube into the shroud...
..the muffler's i.d. is about 3/4"...so it acts as an orifice as well as a filter...

..oh, and the induction end of the tube, I scalloped the opening to create a kinda scoop inside the shroud...

..imma take pics of the pieces, parts etc., as i'm doing the final assembly..

I've saw the airfilter and I have to ask , what happens when it rain and the air filter get wet ? thats one of the reason why i don't change my air filter

..i lose about 5 mph or so in the rain, but other than that. i've never had any problems...

..and i've ridden in some downpours...

so the water can't reach in carb ?

so the water can't reach in carb ?

..i guess not to the point that it causes much concern...

I just recently ended up with what I attribute to water getting in the engine on mine.  I've never had any problems with it before.  More recently however, I moved my air filter back and to the side a little so it now sticks out more than before.  We had 2 days straight of extremely heavy rain and I think some got through.  I've recently been putting a zip-lock bag over the filter when I know it will be sitting in the rain for an extended period.  Haven't had any issues since.  I've never had any problems riding in the rain.  For the most part the oil on the filter keeps the water from getting through.  The performance increase is IMO well worth the extra vigilance of wrapping it up when it's parked in the rain!

...ive done some crazy things to my scoot...

..i hope i ain't leading anybody toward damaging their's......

..dudes, don't jump into these kinda things without first hittin' the basics...

..read your plug, believe what it's telling you...

..then listen to your engine....learn it's song....

..it's all about tuning...as you would a guitar..or a piano...

..learn your engine's sounds, the harmonics, the resonance from the exhaust...

..the whines of the cvt...they all gotta come together..

..i think that harmonics are the key to setting up a 4-stroke...

...yeah,...

..why?..

..because the less of a ...zzzzwwwzzzzwwwwzzzz..i hear (feel) at top speed..

....the faster she seems to run....

..and even if you can't hear what i'm talkin' about, do your plug chops...

..and trust your chops...they don't lie....

..tho lean IS fast!!!!.....DONT RUN LEAN!!!!.....there is a balance....

..okay, with all that bein' said...is there a "performance" cooling fan for these A50s??..

..that has more cubic (inches, centimeters) discharge..per revolution than stock??

..yeah, i could probly google it, but this is wwaaayyyy more fun....

..i want more air into the carb, and i also want to assure sufficient engine cooling...

...i'm contemplating gettin' rid of the K&N completely...

..i may need to open the intake...i dunno...that's next....afterthought....

..one drawback in doin this, so far as i know, is that it will silence my scoot like crazy...

..i liked that throaty, wwaaaah sound that the K&N gave it...lol..

..though, that Indy whine is kinda cool too....

peace

I got mine from scooter assassins.  http://www.exportstrength.com/index.php?cPath=22_46_333 (http://www.exportstrength.com/index.php?cPath=22_46_333)   This page is the AG/50 race fan.

...zombie....that fan description says "less drag"...do you think it generates more air flow?
Title: Re: ..blown air induction 1.0 ..
Post by: zombie on April 07, 2010, 01:24:55 AM
I got into a thread on Scoot Inv. about the same thing. The fan is actually a vacuum generator. It creates a vortex in its center, and the displaced air has to go somewhere; RIGHT! In My Humble Opinion... The larger the CONE at the center of the fan=more efficient flow produced. The larger fan will need a modification of your shroud. Realistically you can simply cut the shroud to fit the fan, and the air flow over the engine would be mostly reduced. It takes NOTHING to mock up a shroud extension from a bleach bottle/soda bottle, ect,. Once you have the "mold/basic shape" cover the form w/ epoxy, and ANY kind of cloth. Pop out the mold, and trim your new CUSTOM piece to fit.

hey slinger, may I ask, what is the tube out of your filter for?
and what jet size are you using with that setup?
 WAY COOOOOOOOOOOOL DUDE!!!!!!!!!   insane....

..yeah dude..that's the tubing from my stock airbox..I use it to take in air from the cooling fan, and force it into the carburetor..

..gives my scoot quicker take-off, and a cpl mph more on the top end...

...it has a cpl of drawbacks in the design tho...

..but it works GREAT!!!

.oh, and i believe it was a 106?? jet...don't really remember..i may have posted it here somewhere...

..Im not running it now, due to the design flaws..

..see the "blown air induction 2.0 thread...
