Title: speeding up a people 50
Post by: dreflu on January 29, 2010, 12:00:48 PM
i have a 2001 people 50 i just bought and i've been looking for days on how to speed it up. it seems to get around 40 and quit pulling. i see where a washer can be taken out of some of them but that engine isn't the same. it looks like the generic chinnese motor. this one is different.

i saw where i could change the cdi box out for one off a cobra and cut the green wire. there are only 4 wires going to the cdi box black, blue, blue/black and green. can i just cut the wire on the cdi box i already have? if not where can i find a cobra cdi box?

thanks for any help

I too own a 2001 people 50 . I bought it used but I have been told that in 2001 the people 50 was imported without restrictions other than the cdi , which restricts revs to keep you from damaging or blowing up your engine . My people will go past the 80 kph on the speedo . My gps indicates about 45 mph . I have replaced the drive belt , clutch weights , roller weights , air filter element , and the spark plug with an iridium NGK BPR8HIX (ordered through Advance Auto). I also run 93 octane premium without ethanol and amsoil Interceptor 2T oil . Make sure you are running 25-26 PSI in front and 28 PSI in the rear tire . Hope this helps , good luck .

where can i get the kit with the new belt and rollers? what would happen if i cut the green wire? at around 40 it seems like i'm letting off the gas. i can feel it stop pulling. this has to do with the belt drive? have you heard of drilling out the muffler?

thanks

Im ordered my parts through Stadium Yamaha , they also sell Kymco parts and have parts diagrams on their website . I don't think drilling your exhaust is wise but you might need to take it off and clean it out . Good luck .

That green wire is the ground wire for the cdi. You have a D.C. cdi on that scoot. If you contact Suitai dirrectly you can order an un-restricted factory cdi for the same cost as any other. It takes about 2 weeks to receive it. Here is the link...  http://motorcycle-components.com/ (http://motorcycle-components.com/)

Oh well , you can add that to the replacement parts list . While you wait for parts you might read up on all of the old posts on this forum for the information . Youtube also has some interesting maintenance videos for scooters . Good luck .

the unrestricted cdi helps the take off or top speed? and i saw the u tube video but my engine is different. and they just removed a washes it looked like. the engine looks like the generic ones. that's what i was talking about in my first post. and thanks for the help!

The CDI will only effect top speed.  For better acceleration, you can tune the transmission.  Lighter rollers and stiffer clutch springs.

..i need me another cdi...i found that the kymco branded unrestricted cdi gave me a cpl more mph top end...than what i get from my stock, chopped-off casing cdi.....scootermaven and i swapped cdi's for a few test runs....

Here's the link   AGAIN!  http://motorcycle-components.com/ (http://motorcycle-components.com/)    I used to buy a cdi every 3 months or so. You can look back to my first post. Haven't bought one since. If you run custom cams or cylinder timing, Suitai will program a cdi for YOU. What's that thing about a horse to water?

i dont see where to order one on the link. i sent them a email. so the new belt and clutch and rollers will not help the top speed that's the cdi? if so all i need is the cdi. it picks up speed really well. anyone have a cdi without a rev limit that will work for this they want to sell?

That link is not a "store" type set up! there is an International # you will have to call. Then you can give the vin # of your scoot, explain that you need a un- restricted cdi. It will cost around $39.00 + shipping

unrestricted- you can blow up your motor . oem-you can't overrev your motor .
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: juice on February 02, 2010, 04:48:32 PM
This is just my unqualified opinion . I think that before a person without special knowledge or skills alters or derestricts a factory cdi they should ask themselves some questions . Has your motor been altered to withstand higher than normal rpm's ? Do you know what the redline on your motor is ? Have you installed a tachometer ? Would you know if you were approaching the redline ? If the answer to any of these questions is no then you are risking catistrophic damage to your motor . Just my two cents .

im no tech but ive turned a few screws on scooters before. i've just never had a kymco. i've had 2 of the 150s (gy6 maybe?) and i've had 3 or 4 of the 50cc versions of that engine. i've repaired those a few times. they just don't seem to last to long. i sent you a message on ebay about the cdi and never heard anything back. and do you sell a tachometers? i wasn't planning on running it waide open all day. and i'm thinking something has been done to it it does 40 now just no more. i'm thinking some parts on it have already been upgraded. it gets to 40mph really fast then just lets up.

I don't sell anything , and I am not on ebay . I was just trying to point you in the direction you seem to be intent upon . I have said enough on this incident , perhaps too much . Good luck .

There are only 2 other sources for the CORRECT cdi that I know of. One is   Jiangwayne.com, and the other is Scooter assassins .com  Both are 3 times the price of going direct to the factory. I wouldn't worry about blowing the engine. there is not enough torque to push it into over-revving. The limiter is there for speed restriction, not engine protection. Moped hospital also has them but is even more expensive than the others. My best advice is still to get on the phone w/ Suitai. They designed the thing!

ive been looking and can't find a cdi for this thing. i can't get any reply from the sites. but as i'm googling i keep seeing on the 2001 you use the cobra cdi box. anyone know if this will work? they have those on ebay.

thanks

my cdi got here today and WOW! I can hit 44 on flat road. just in case someone has the same problem as i the cobra racing cdi is the unrestricted one for the people 50. i ordered it off ebay $54 shipped. it made a HUGE difference. i think i'm gonna try the clutch, weights, jets and spark plug next. any idea which of these would help the most?
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: zombie on March 10, 2010, 04:25:43 PM
The Variator weights/sliders, and heavier clutch springs will help get more rpm's giving you a better "hole shot". going 3 grams lighter on the weights will give you more pep. and stiffer clutch springs will delay the time it takes for the clutch to lock up. It does become a trial and error thing to get it set up the way you want. 3gr. is a good guide line to start w/. , and the mid weight springs are generally the best overall for a stock engine. There is also a torsion control spring in the clutch that keeps it all tight. The white spring is the best overall. You can get these parts all in one place for under $50.00 shipped. I use    http://www.malossiusaonline.com/Variator_Rollers_s/30.htm (http://www.malossiusaonline.com/Variator_Rollers_s/30.htm)   that page shows the rollers, they also have the springs. Can you post a link for the cdi? There are plenty of People's that would like to grab one up! Ps man Awesome!

Those are the outside dimensions of the rollers.  You either have one or the other.  The service manual will state which ones you have.

i got my scoot used so no manual. how do i measure them or should i just buy the whole (varitor or boss drive maybe) thing?
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: zombie on March 11, 2010, 03:08:24 AM
I posted a manual under your other thread. You can just let those die off, and post it all here. The forum search will still locate them for others w/ ?'s. Even if you buy another var. you will still need to tune it. I think it would be easier to get 2 sets of rollers, swap them out, test run, repeat. That way you get a feel for the set up. and can later add the Hi $ parts. Chances are good that if you swap your pipe, w/out rejetting the rollers won't matter anyway. You allready got all the power the scoot was built with. Anything more takes a good ear for the engine, and alot of trial, and error. You could even buy 3-4 sets of cheapo Ebay rollers for the price of 2 good sets, and try them all. Just buy a good set of the weight you like, and swap them 1 more time.

No worries!  They don't come with a Service anyways! You can get the manual here, http://www.timtaylor.net/Scooter/Manuals.htm, (http://www.timtaylor.net/Scooter/Manuals.htm,) I just did!  It says the rollers are 16mm X 13mm.  I didn't see where it specified the stock weight though.

i ordered 3.3 gram rollers but the more i read this seems to be to light. and i couldn't find any of the white springs
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: Shaka on March 11, 2010, 02:36:45 PM
3.3g is too light!  On a stock set-up you're probably more around 7g.  The white spring is a Malossi contra spring for the clutch, I think it is 1000 rpm.  The other clutch springs are the "fly" springs (3 small springs).  You probably need about 1500 rpm "fly" springs.
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: dreflu on March 11, 2010, 05:22:35 PM
is there a good combo for the 3.3 rollers i got? if not and what color spring is the one i need for a stock set up? i plan to get the leo vince pipe and cut it and drill the restricter out but that's about it. will the leo pipe derestricted give me more top end?
Title: Re: speeding up a people 50
Post by: zombie on March 11, 2010, 08:19:38 PM
The 3.3 are for a full blown race set up. You would need an engine that can spin 13,000 rpm's. I wouldn't op-en the package, just return them. try the 7gr shaka said.

It's way too loud without the packing!  I just re-packed mine because it was clogged up and saturated with oil.  It gets much louder as that happens!  I took Zombie's advice and re-packed with some Fab Mat.  No real change in performance, just noise level.  I think I need to re-jet though.  It seems performance has suffered with the warm/humid weather.
