Title: Malossi 19mm Carburetor Kit 1611028 for Kymco 50cc 2 Stroke install
Post by: chaz35 on January 07, 2016, 06:44:13 AM
I am thinking about getting this kit (Malossi 1611028) and doing some research before I buy it.  Looks like great kit, and appears to be lots of information on how to tune it.

However, I have seen very little information on how to install the throttle cable.  Actually, what I see is comments about messing up the Kymco throttle cable trying to get the carb top cap off.  Also, I know the Malossi carb is 19mm and the Kymco carb is 16mm so the Malossi carb has approx 1/8" longer throw to reach WOT, which has to mess up the oil injection linkage.  At 1st I thought the longer throw would need some adjustment at the hand control, but after I realized it was only approx 1/8" seems like that wouldn't be an issue.

I know many recommend disabling the oil injection pump anyway, but I would like to keep it.  I haven't seen anything on how to adjust the linkage for the oil injection pump to allow for the additional movement of the throttle cable.

Anyone know know how to to make a nice neat throttle cable install to the 19mm PHBG carb and keep the oil injection pump connected so it works properly?  Any comments welcomed.  Cheers

Anyone ever order a new throttle cable?  Does it come with carb top cap, or is it just cable without top cap?  I am thinking it comes without the carb top cap.

Not sure why no one seems to do it, but seems too easy to me, just order new throttle cable, remove old throttle cable and save it if you ever want to put scooter back the way it was.  Maybe the issue is removing the old throttle cable?  I haven't verified yet, but assume you have to remove some plastic to get the old out and new throttle cable in.  I know the plastic is a pain to take off, maybe that's the issue?

On to issues with the oil injection pump.  This thing works great, why wouldn't you want to keep it?  Need more oil, just add a little more when you buy gas, do combo oil injection and premix.  I almost always buy just a tad over 1 gallon at pump.  50 to 1 is 2.5oz oil, 40 to 1 is 3.2oz, 30 to 1 is 4.3 oz.  So, I buy 1 gal of gas and add approx 1 oz of oil at the pump and I am running approx 37 to 1.  With oil pump installed and adding 1 oz to gal, I am running approx 56 to 1 at idle and 37 to 1 WOT.  Without oil pump, I have to add approx 3.5oz oil, so I am 37 to 1 all the time.  That means without the oil pump while it idles at the red light for 5 minutes it gets all loaded up and smokes like a mosquito fogger when the light finally turns green.  Don't want to do that.

I know the 19mm carb has longer pull to get to WOT compared to oem carb at 16mm, but difference between 19mm and 16mm is only approx 1/8".  I can imagine, if you just install the cable to the oil pump and carb without any adjustment to the oil pump, the oil pump cable may keep the carb from opening all the way, or opens the oil pump too much.  I imagine you need to loosen the oil pump cable 1/8" so it only opens 100% at WOT.  However, after adjustment for 1/8" slack the the oil pump is not opened enough except at WOT, what to do?

You could go to huge amount of  trouble making some kind of throttle plate with a bell crank to adjust the opening of the oil pump to synchronize with the throttle cable (that's what the engineers did when they designed the oem setup, the little wheel on top of the oil pump is a bell crank, the diameter controls how much the oil pump opens and can be changed by design) or just add a little more oil to the gas tank when you fill up.  I am already adding 1 oz to the tank because with bigger carb I am running engine harder and turning more revs.  I am thinking maybe OK adding just 1 oz or I could to add a little more for for insurance, maybe 1.5oz, too easy?

Comments welcomed.  Cheers

Here my work today bro I changed out the oem carb cable for the one with the kit I can say before I was only opening about 80% at WOT now slide is all the way open. Also my ghetto rigging had made oil pump run rich to where I had to bend bracket so it stayed in hashmarks at WOT insteas of all the way open. Now it is sitting perfect and I was able to bend bracket back into original position. I experienced more difficulty than expecting in tearing apart OEM splitter it is obviously designed as a one piece unit and not to be messed with . I did discover what I think is the easiest method to not only disassemble but reuse OEM splitter with new cable. I will do a write up on it but here some pics for you. I will say this after going through all this I still believe this is a good kit. I have messing with it and the Kymco and if anything my only regret is not getting the 21mm kit instead. I still haven't permanently mounted my manual choke cable I have it zip tied to the airbox lol but it works great.

And yes you hit it on the head I think after all I did today ordering a brand new single cable to a specific length and a splitter solves all the issue I had but I think there is there possibility of using stock main cable if you detach it from handle bar side think that's how the do it after looking at it.

Hello pace, I don't understand how the spliter works, I guess I need to take it out and look at it.  My People is all apart anyway, would be good time to check it out.  I guess you are still using the oil injection part of the cable and spliced the new cable into the oem cable?

Also, I don't understand why the oem cable would limit the opening of the carb, unless it was damaged maybe?  You indicated it may have been damaged after you worked on it, so I am thinking that's the reason, but I don't know.

I see you like the 21mm carb.  I was actually thinking 17.5mm would be plenty, but the 19mm Malossi kit with the extra parts was very attractive.  Why you wanting 21mm carb now?  In general, as I understand it, big carbs kill bottom end power.  Cheers

I don't understand the whole science of the cable either other than that it works lol the old OEM is actually shorter than the Malossi kit one. All I know for certain is OEM did not open all the way......Malossi opens all the way and Fixed my previously stated issue with oil pump. Yes I am still using pump only reason I would change is once BBK is installed worried about reliability and consistency. 40/1 premix is 40/1 all the time OEM oil pump varies with throttle. If you play around with it try this take the throttle cable off the throttle completely and take off the back of the splitter. Then see if the aluminum piece connecting all three cables will slide out back side with room to swap carb cables. Also reason for bigger carb is just because if I had got the bigger from the get go I would never have to worry bout getting it later. I still don't think I have this tuned right it hangs after letting off throttle instead of dropping to idle till I'm stopped. The Dellorto Carbs are had to tune but are the best performing from what I hear. I especially like the mounting hardware I can loosen carb from intake adapter and airbox and twist carb to get to bowl screws and remove to get to jets without removing anything but bowl cover.

I found a link to the Malossi instructions and read them.  Some good info, but nothing about needing to modify throttle cable.  I see where the choke goes, how to modify the stock airbox, and list of settings: max jet, min jet, nozzle, gas valve, needle, notch setting, and float which is good info.

These carbs can be turned to the max, I guess you could spend the rest of your life changing variables and testing lols.  The Malossi ad gives the impression the carb is already set-up for Kymco 49cc engines, but I wonder.  I have seen several posts the nozzle is wrong, for a 4t, and needs to be changed?  I won't say anything about Malossi, but you know what I am thinking, right?

I did see in instructions for Yamaha scooter:  "invert the gas and lubrication pump cable in the cable splitter, to allow the total opening of the carburetor ".  But doesn't say how to modify the cable splitter, and doesn't say to do that for Kymco.

Wouldn't it be cool if someone did a thread on how to modify the throttle cable?  That's what I am looking for.  Mainly I see comments about messing it up lols.

I am still thinking:  buy another Kymco throttle cable, and replace the oem throttle cable.  I actually saw one small comment to that effect by Areomyst (a very knowledgeable scooter guy, I think he runs scooterinvasion forum?, he used to post here, but I haven't seen him in awhile).

I still think the only reason the oem throttle cable doesn't work is because the carb top cap is not designed to be removed from the cable and it doesn't fit the new carb.  To get the oem throttle cable free of the carb top cap, you have to destroy the carb top cap, then you are go to go, right?

Cheers

New idea, just buy new Kymco top cap.  Then can remove the carb top cap from the Kymco throttle cable and throw it away.  Now you have your throttle cable already on the scooter and ready for your new carb.

If you want to go back to original carb, you already have your Kymco carb top cap, and can start over.   Will this work?, too easy?  Cheers

And also why would they show how to modify cable splitter or take it apart........its not their part bro. Here the skinny the Dellorto carb is the best for our scoots from what I've seen most other top brands use a Dellorto clone. THIS is a DELLORTO carb with all types of mounting and choke hardware that you can decide to use or not use provided by Malossi. The choke is not designed to mount up its for frame or underbody around carb. The adapter is a godsend as now all I need to change jets or anything on underside of carb is a flathead and a phillips screwdriver and don't even have to remove airbox. All in all the Malossi Dellorto Carb kit is the %$#@ it works and if I had known my scooter better before installing it myself not only would it have gone on flawlessly with all parts intended to go on. But it also would have taken less time as I spent a ton of time tearing stock carb cable to shreds to get it to work. You with all the experience you have should do it right first time in about half the time I did it and it should work perfectly.

Late to chime in,  but you remember my pics of removing,  and still being able to use the old Kymco top?  I still have it for some reason.  I removed mine,  put the cable into the 19mm arreche carb,  check for full opening,  which it does,  and only had a slight bit of play to the arreche top solved with the rubber boot it came with.  I still used a bit of electrical tape to really make sure I wasn't getting any dirt in there.  It also didn't effect the oil pump position,  which I had already tuned to open more at wot to compensate for the big bore.  I've been running it like this for close to a year without problems from it.
Not sure if any of that matters in this conversation.  Just thought I'd chime in!
Oh yeah,  the whole bigger carb thing,  from what I understand,  larger jacks with the venturi and can actually hinder your performance if the case isn't pulling hard enough to compensate for the larger carb size.  That's where the low end will suffer. I had someone explain it with a reference to straws and the suction needed and the power the liquid would come out with the different sizing.  Wish I could remember where that was.  Made the venturi thing make a lot more sense to me.

Yes, I remember your pics and description about modifying the carb cap, very helpful.  I would like to do a cleaner install if possible.

I learned about larger carbs racing karts.  The bigger carbs make more HP, but loose low end.  For example, They don't pull away coming out of slow turns, you maybe pass them, then on top end they come roaring by.  You solve the problem of losing low HP by slipping the clutch more, 10000 revs works great.  But how would you like your scooter clutch to sip to 10000revs before you start moving?  Your clutch would be toast 1st time you tried it.  2cycle karts run expensive disc plate clutches some dry, but many bathed in expensive clutch oil, and still very easy to burn up.  I don't miss them.

Racing is one thing, riding on the street is another.  I think 17.5mm carb would work great, bigger is not always better.  19mm is probably very good, Malossi kit is probably best deal, so will probably get one.  I am looking for 17.5mm carb.  If I can find 17.5mm carb for a good price, that appears to work well, and has the different components available (jets, needle, atomizer, etc), I will get one.

Cheers

Tries, info about the cable opening WOT OK and oil injector working well is really helpful.  I know you are using Arreche carb 21mm?, right.

I am not sure, but seems like paceneedssitides said cable was plenty long.  I am thinking was not included to splice into oem cable, but was included to use if you were going to bypass the oil injector pump and only needed the throttle cable, I am right?

This is all becoming clear to me now.

Mine is a 19mm arreche.  Unless I get top end that I port out really well,  start trenching my case, put a stuffer crank and all that to raise my crank case compression I won't go any higher than 19mm.  At least with these out of the box street race type kits.  If I was turning 12k rpm all the time a 21mm would prove to be beneficial, maybe even a 24.  Let me see if I can find that graph I just saw...

I think the included cable has a different sleeve length around the wire that allows for longer cable travel and therefore allows the slide to open fully? I think? It isn't meant to delete the oil pump if that was the case they would more than likely provide a long cable to go all the way to throttle and do away with splitter completely. I like the look of the Arreche carbs and they do make a 17.5mm I think they come with float bowls with one big center nut or bolt to get to main jet. You can get these for Dellorto too but don't think any come stock with it. I believe you also get t keep electric choke with Arreche while you can't with Dellorto PHGB type carb but you can with other types just not PHGB. Every post about bigger carbs I've seen has said if you're gonna do more than just BBK definitely get 19mm instead of 17.5 and since the price was right at scooterpartsco thats what I went with I mean Malossi BBK and Carb kit are both about the same so figured why not. I wish I had the answers to everything but only know it's worked for me and I have no complaints. I'm new to scooters and 2 strokes other than weedeaters as of 2 months ago but in these couple months I"ve learned alot as I go and mess up here and there and somehow since first mishap have kept things running and have 1850 miles on it since beginning of november. LIke Chaz said we need a good writeup and 49ccscoot.com has a good tuning write up but hopefully one of us or all of us can come up with one for over here.

Good info Tries, I read the link to 49ccscoot, very interesting.  I didn't go to all the links in that thread, but will sometime later.  Where do you get parts for your Arreche carb?

OK pace, so the long cable in the kit doesn't go all the way to the hand control, good info, I thought it probably did.  I still think it may be to locate the choke control.  Your the only one to open up the splitter and replace the oem throttle cable that I know of.  Where did you see to do that, can you provide a link?

I need to do some more research on what jets to get, any other tuning parts, and some spares, be good to order everything up front.  The Malossi kit is the best deal, and probably what I will get.  I like the 17.5mm Arreche the best, but it's more expensive.  There is a 17.5mm Dellorto I like a lot, but probably even more expensive than the Arreche.   I know easy to find parts for Dellorto, so plus for Malossi kit and Dellorto.

Lots of trad-offs.

I had no info for the splitter bro if you look at my cable splitter thread in Technical section you'll see I got no responses I did it on my own. the long cable is for splitter to carb the short cable is for carb to choke, I only changed out the cable from SPLITTER  to carb not MAIN throttle cable. I did it cuz hell I knew it needed to be done the slide wasn't opening all the way and the Malossi manual said to switch it out and other threads did too. You'll also see in that thread I think you might not have to do what I did and can use OEM  splitter with new carb cable. I can explain in more detail if you need but I think if you disengage throttle cable from hand grip you may have enough slack to slide connector out of splitter and swap cables. I got my Malossi 19mm Dellorto Kit at scooterpartsco. I got my jet ranges at treatland.tv. also got the domino cable splitter from treatland.tv. Any questions you have bro we can message or talk on the phone if needed I'll answer what I can just let me know. Tries knows alot about this too he's just playing quiet.

Sorry,  I get lost at the other forum, lol.  The arreche is nice,  the nut at the bottom is great,  my dellorto clone on my tgb also has one.  As for parts,  I've only seen one rebuild kit and I don't remember where.  The jets can be a pain to find.  I ordered one from eBay for 5 bucks and got another for free from a buddy at the local scooter shop.  I didn't go real deep with jetting like I should have. I found a nice place and have pretty much stayed there.  The electric choke is convenient,  but I'm not certain if mine is functioning properly anymore.  It seems like its not causing a problem though.  Honestly, I'll probably go with a dellorto style for the next one.  I feel more in control with the manual choke,  and I get a lot of response from the air fuel ratio screw.  Maybe it's just the different kit, size, and bike in general.  I'm not sure at this point lol

Good replies, thanks.

Racingplanetusa has all the Arreche stuff you need, but it takes forever to get anything from those guys.  Thing is, I don't know what to buy for tuning.  Until I figure that out, will wait to buy.  The more I look, the more I learn, but not very efficient, I spend hours looking and pick up a little here and there.

Pace, I read your thread, good job and initiative, you are fearless dude.  I want to keep oem parts as is, so I can easily go back to oem carb setup.  I've been through the Treatland carburetor section a couple of times, all 1000 plus items.  They have a lot of stuff, but best I can tell it's mostly for moped.  These carbs come configured all sorts of ways, like the screw adjustment and idle adjustment can be on the other side of the carb, different top caps, electric or manual choke, different connections to manifold (bolt on, slip on), ...

I did some calculations for area of the different size carbs.  16mm is approx 201mm squared, 17.5mm is approx 240mm squared, and 19mm is approx 283mm squared.  That means 17.5mm has approx 20% more area for fuel/ air mixture to flow through than oem carb, and 19mm has approx 41% more area.  It doesn't take much diameter increase to effect a big area increase.

I also think I want to try 17.5mm carb on 49cc Super 9.  I think 19mm would definitely be too much for 49cc engine stock except for pod airfilter and expansion chamber exhaust.  I am still thinking 17.5mm is to way to go for my 1st bigger carb.

I bought a lot of different main jets/ slow jets for the oem carb.  I feel like I have it figured out and tuned to the max.  I would like to do the same with a larger carb.  When I get more info on what to get for tuning a specific carb, I will probably buy something, and just deal with what I have.

Cheers

Fearless isn't the word I was thinking of more like stupid....impatient.......impetuous.....lol. If I had known as much as I know now when I first installed the Dellorto I would most likely have been able to disassemble OEM splitter and swap cables and put back together with no issues at all. The more I play with my Like the more I learn about it I'm nervous about the BBK install though but that is why I am still gathering info on it watching vids and getting tools needed. Actually it looks very simple as long as you follow directions and don't cut any corners just a bit of work to even get to the point of swap lol.

I am contacting MotionPro about a custom cable.  If I can get a custom one made up without costing a fortune, that's what I plan to do.  I haven't seen any information where modifying the throttle cable has gone smooth.

I still thinking about making a throttle plate where I could splice 2 cables together outside the cable housing.  I have a crimping tool, looks like bolt cutters, that you use to splice a small cable together with a cable splice.  I used it to make redundant brake cable for kart racing (safety requirement) and made a trailer break away cable (if trailer comes off tow vehicle, the breakaway cable actuates the brakes).  With that mod, I could make custom throttle cables easy.  Cheers

I completely forgot about reading that thread when I first got my Like. But I'm not sure why you want a custom cable if you got the bike apart measure your cab;e from end to end and find one about the same size. Alot of places online sell throttle cables. But from what Luigi said and what I've found is you can use oem Main cable and oem splitter and just replace carb cable without damaging OEM splitter if you take throttle cable off of handlebar.

pace, don't worry about me not being able to do the throttle cable mod, it's just me.  I am not use to motorcycle type cables that are captured on both ends and need proper free length, right end size and shape.  I am used to making up cables with just one end having a fitting, then you anchor the other end of the cable with some sort of cable anchor.  You can make up throttle cables on the fly, cut the cable to length, cut the cable housing to length, and install, too easy.

Splicing into the cable splitter. having to cut off the carb top cap has overloaded my brain.  I just want something I can bolt on.  Give me some more time, I may get there.  What really discouraged me was after Luigi figured out how to mod the cable and did it, it still wasn't right the way it entered the top of carb.  He had a 90 degree bent tube that would solve the issue, but it wouldn't work because the free end of the cable provided by Malossi was too short to accommodate the bent tube.  He forgot about it, cause it worked OK, and his scoot was running good.  Unfortunately, stuff like that bugs until I can get it right.  Cheers

I didn't get a bend and don't worry much about it mine works prefect with the Malossi cable in place. I think Kiehn or however the stock carb manufacturer is spelled makes a 17.5 maybe if you tracked that down it would be plug and play with all the stock stuff. The end stops on these cables into the carb are much smaller than I have seen able to crimp and the threads I've seen concerning DIY scooter cables have all soldered the end.

You can do some reading to understand how the PHBG carb works, but as I understand it, the carb is supposed to already have the the appropriate components to work well with a 49cc to 70cc 2T scooter engine.  Maybe not?, but I bet it's pretty close, except for the main jet.    If you get into it, I think you will find there are literally 1000's of combinations of jets, slides, needles, nozzles, it will be overwhelming.

For awhile I was favoring Arreche, but have come around to Dellorto, or maybe a Dellorto clone carb.  Arreche are not readliy available except from RacingPlanet.  Everywhere I look they are out of stock.  Maybe RacingPlanet has exclusive deal with Arreche, I don't know.  I like RacingPlanet fine, but don't want to be dependent upon them for parts.

MotionPro got back with me about making a custom throttle cable and I don't think that's the way I want to go.  You send them your old throttle cable and the new carb.  Then they cannibalize your oem cable to make you a custom cable for $55 plus shipping.  With the cost to replace the old cable, shipping to MotionPro, plus their charges, seems like too much for me.

The light finally came on for what to do about the throttle cable.  I now realize can probably make my own custom throttle cable, just the way I want it, for not much $'s.  I was clueless about the cable splitter and kept looking at them and finally figured out how they work.  The cable splitter or 2 into 1 junction is what I was looking for.  It's function is very similar the throttle plate I was thinking about, but simpler.  I've been looking at some vids about making custom control cables and think I can do it.  Not sure I would attempt to make a brake cable, but throttle cables don't take much load, should be a good place to start and learn how.  Cheers

Yeah thats the Domino Splitter I got from treatland.tv. they have the domino for like 5 bucks and the Malossi for like 10 I think the Malossi is all metal. I think it was parts for scooters that has a ton of cables that you may or may not get to work as the main throtte to splitter cable. If my adventure had not worked I had bought two splitters and was ready to buy a new main to try. since I have this extra splitter I would be willing to send to to you for free it was only a few bucks gives you something to play with and look at and figure out how you want to do it. Also if you do go Dellorto I believe best deal on Malossi kit if scooterpartsco.com but if you go to treatland the carb section and search PHGB they got tons of parts and rebuild kits for it. And yeah the carb ran fine straight out of the box even without right carb cable but from what I've seen these things take a long time to fine tune to each individual setup. I can easily say out of box this definitely had an overall affect albeit small on my Like but as I have jetted and tuned and I have added this and that I have had more small increases in performance. Its like buying a performance car from dealership, you can get all the packages for performance from them but, once you get it home theres always more you can do to squeeze out that last bit.

Thanks for offer on splitter.  Did you get 2 Domino's or 1 Domino and 1 Malossi?  I've only seen pics, done some reading, and think the Domino is highly rated.  I was planning on getting one from Treats, plus some other stuff too.  Treats has some cool stuff and good prices too.

I figured out today, my 16mm Keihin carb is 17mm, so that kills idea of getting 17.5mm carb.  I really like the Malossi kit you got, will probably order one soon.

Recently, I've been focused on CVT with Malossi torque driver installed.  I will add something to that thread soon.  Yes, constantly tweaking these scooters is never ending, but loads of fun.  I guess when we get them all figured out, time to move on?  Cheers

I bought two just in case first try didn't work, Just let me know if you want this one its all yours if I decide to mess with mine again I'll probably buy Malossi you know me lol. I have spent most of today trying to replace rear shock on Like that was blown out when I got ran off road by a dump truck before Christmas with inferior parts.Worked OKish with just me but my daughters like to go for rides and would keep bottoming NextR into body parts with two people even on stiffest setting.  Finally broke down after two different ones didn't work and ordered this from Racing Planet really want one with a reservoir  but that is for when I have a job again lol this should take sare of things though didn't go OEM went aftermarket. It's longer than stock but I need that extra length.

Hey chaz;

Have you considered getting the same style carb but larger? Like the PB18? The carbs should be similar dimensions except for the ID. This would also mean same connections. The PB18 has an external manual choke which could be easily hit if you run a pod filter.

Some of the atv 2 strokes like the eton 90r came with an 18-19mm carb from the factory.

Actually, I did a fair amount of carb research before deciding to get Malossi 19mm carb kit.

There are a several different carbs out there, some very cheap that would probably work well.  With more experience, and testing I could probably figure out a carb that would work great.  I just decided to go ahead and pay extra for carb with a little or a lot better quality, that's more likely to work well, has good selection of parts, and probably less trouble tuning than a cheap clone.

Later, I might try a cheap clone carb and see how that goes.  I do have more than one 49cc 2T scooter and a cheap carb that works well could save some $'s.
