Title: Like 200 Dipstick Heads Up.....
Post by: ScooterLar on October 29, 2015, 03:41:52 PM
Yesterday when I changed the oil in my wife's Like 200, I made the mistake of trying to straighten out a small bend/curve in the bottom part of the dipstick that's submerged in oil. Long story short, the bottom portion of the dipstick broke off in my hand. It just baffles me why the bottom portion of the dipstick is made of plastic instead of metal. It's no mystery that hot oil will make the plastic dipstick brittle as it ages. Does it cost that much more to make the bottom part of the dipstick out of metal vs. plastic? I ordered a replacement dipstick and a spare from my Dealer just in case it happens again.

I think Vivo found some pretty snazzy aftermarket anodized dip sticks with chrome or stainless "sticks". Very old post. Direct replacement, I think.

When I first did a check of my oil level I immediately ordered a backup dipstick as it appeared fragile.  So far I haven't had an issue. I thought about taking the spare and cutting off the gauge and replace it with a metal rod.

Me, too.
Still in my toolbox, waiting....
BUT I am never ever going to complain about a dip stick of any kind or quality. After owning a dipstick-less Suzuki scooter . The angry Zuki boys built this with just a site window which must be viewed ONLY with the scooter OFF of the center stand - held upright by your pit crew - and only 180 seconds after a shut down from a run of 180 seconds. Only. This will give th eonly accurate reading - per Suzuki-san. The oil is measured into the scooter while upright, but NOT on the center stand. (stop at Lowe's on the way home with your new scooter because you gotta buy some lumber to build the scooter-holding stand in order to check your oil)
Am I exaggerating this idiocy? My small fussing about this has drawn so many responses from other owners that it has nearly come to blows. (...."ignore the manual; ignore the "1200ml" embossed on the side of the engine;fill the window on the stand; you will blow up your engine if you do that - don't do this; use a builder's level on the dash - with a mirror on a stick; hire a native kid; rent a monkey; "use a camera with a timer on a block of wood" (this was me!); buy a Honda...", etc.)
Give me a $1.25 bent plastic dip stick any day! Bravo KYMCO !! Taiwan beats Japan, again.
PS: No use to carry a popcicle stick to check the oil on this Zuki....can't get it in there. I tried.

I broke the bent dipstick on the red LIKE. I ordered a new one and got it within two weeks. I am definitely more careful now. My concern is that if it broke and fell into the sump.
