Well I do not know what the kid did to it; but this gun metal grey Zuma passed us on County Road 56 doing well over 60 yesterday afternoon!
We were in the Miata (hard top up it was blazing hot) heading East to my Grand Nephew's 1st birthday party. Out of nowhere comes this lanky kid on a scooter in the left lane. I look to the left and he is already by us; I glanced down at our speedometer and it's at just over 60 mph. He passed us like we were standing still. I didn't see what he was riding until the next intersection where the traffic light had caught us both. The young man was six feet something, must have weighed all of 135 or 140 pounds, flip flops, shorts & a t-shirt, no helmet... some would say, "Super Squid".
The bike was a Yamaha Zuma. Light changes and he takes off. I hit the gas and followed but never caught up. The Miata was doing 55 + (that's all traffic would allow) as I watched Jr. weave I and out until he was in front and then gone as he blamed though a yellow light and we stopped...
I am pretty sure Yamaha only made a 50cc and a 125cc in the Zuma line; but this thing was doing over 60 mph and it appeared to be his normal riding mode. I wonder what the Zuma had done to it?
My wife asked if my scooter was faster than that, I said I am pretty sure I could keep up with him...

Super Squid? Yep. Riding that fast without a helmet, flip flops and shorts -- super stupid to boot. Too many of that type on the road. Hope he doesn't learn the hard way, or hurts anyone else.

Sounds like the top speed of a Zuma 125 is in the mid-50's, but given the kids weight he may have been able to squeeze a little more out of it. Still, based on what you saw it sounds like he's done some custom work on it.

If that was a Zuma 50, props to him!!!! Did it leave a smoke trail? The Zuma 125 does about 55-60 tops stock so even if it was a125 he's done a little to it.

I don't think it was a 50. But what the heck do I know... No smoke. But he was going between 63 and 67 when he passed us. I thought what the heck was that? Then I tried to catch up (in my wife's Miata) and the kid was still pulling away. Granted the Miata would catch him if I were willing to do 65 or 70 but I was't going to do that on Bruce B. Downs Blvd in Saturday afternoon traffic. I would like to know what he did to the scooter, curious...

I don't know, but I would guess if the "work" to make it that quick involves engine modification; that modification turns out to be a trade (top end increase for engine life). The one doing it has to buy the original scoot. The parts for the upgrade. They have to have the tools and the know how. It seems to be "the long way around"; as there are so many scooter for sale in various states of disrepair. A purchase of a larger scooter that needs work, then putting the same resources to that project and you have the speed that was the original objective in a longer lasting vehicle... Maybe they can't find the bigger scooters cheap enough? or maybe they get the little bikes for almost nothing? The knowledge to be able to do it and seeing it finished must be satisfying... :)

My problem is, i`m paying out too much to insurance companies now.
Between auto, home, and health, they are breaking me.

I feel badly for many regarding insurance. I know folks that lost their coverage due to increase reg's from Obamacare. They paid $350 a month for their group plan, that shut down and the Obamacare coverage is $950 with higher deductibles... Daughter and Son-in-law pay a fortune between health, car, life, business and home...

That's because we are a country divided - the ones with money and power and the ones that don't.
It's obvious the scooter has been modified. I'm thinking racing performance parts like engine top end, CVT components as well as ECU flash modification. If he used quality manufacturers like Malossi, Poloni and Dr. Pulley he could very well sup up his 50 or 125.
