I just wear LOTS of layers! t shirt, long sleeve, sweat shirt, hoodie, and jacket! Kinda like one of those "snowball" kids you see in elementary school! When I did live there I always wore a Dickies coverall! We called it a "monkey" suit. Looked queer as all get out but did the job to keep you warm! 4 months of summer, and 8 months of bad sledding.

In fact Just this mornings mail brought me an American Eagle hooded sweat shirt for $21.00. Even on the scoot I couldn't get to the stores to save over that. Living out in the "swamp land" of Nw florida, I have to do all my clothes shopping on the computer, or everything I own would be "camo".

I have a Craft "long john" base layer with Gore Windstopper panels in the front and Craft gloves with Windstopper as well. They work great! Beyond those I just wear a sweatshirt and my Oakley snowboarding jacket and full face helmet with all the vents closed. When it's really cold I'll wear my Oakley snowboarding pants as well. I also wear DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks. The main trick I have found is cutting the wind penetration and I'm fine. The Gore Windstopper works wonders, and Oakley makes some of the best technical clothing I have run across!

If you are too poor to afford all those brand names from your post :), this will work just nice:

- regular cotton t-shirt + any 10 US$ thick fleece + any 60 US$ cordura noname motorcycle jacket with additional nylon inner lining bought at discount sales
- 10 US$ thermal underwear from ebay + jeans
- 5 US$ long thermal socks + regular socks
- heated handgrips

I have an Olympia AST jacket, FirstGear HT overpants 2.0 and some snow mobile gloves and I have some snow/hiking boots to keep my toes warm. I am pretty happy and warm most of the time. I am hoping Mrs. Claus brings me a balaclava to keep my eye brows warm. My helmet breathes very well and my eye brows get really cold when the temps near 30. My morning commute is usually 25-30 minutes and I tend not to ride in the rain. Should have ridden today, it didn't rain after all.

Time about 1:45 h:min instead of usual 1:30 because of ice/snow on the road. At that time I had no special mc equipment, only jet helmet and several layers of normal clothes.
I'm not anxious for repeating that trip. -11Â°C last winter was enough for an old man.

Were in a dairy farm area of the state and home is 20km from the beach, and with 3 cars to choose from, I dont think I will be riding thru winter. I used to ride a lot when I was younger and got cleaned up by a car in my late teens. After 14 weeks in hospital, and 9 months on crutches I decided to never ride again. I turn 40 in a few months and figured this was a nice way to maybe consider getting back into bikes so its a lifestyle choice as opposed to a nessecity. Sure I love the economy like everyone else, but I want to ride for pleasure, not dodge the puddles and get a wet arse!

Ps, Ive had it 6 weeks now and just completed my 2000km service at 2100km with a 10/40 full synthetic and did the trans oil at the same time with a full synthetic. The engine oil was dirty but the trans oil looked brand new!

I have good warm jacket and insulated chaps but my hands seem to always get cold. I have tried a number of gloves and still get cold hands. I have one pair of gloves with pockets for the little hand warmers. I found if you put one of these small packs in the glove pocket about 20 minutes before a ride your hands stay nice and warm. Made a big difference in enjoying the ride. Found em at Sam's club for 12.99 for a box of 32 pair. Thats about 40 cents a ride for warm hands. They stay warm for 10 hours. :)

..made a mess of my scoot but sliding the ass-end around doin doughnuts was a blast...

..not nearly as much fun as when I hit this one patch of icy road while running @ 40mph today tho...

..i actualy started to drift a bit sideways before I came back onto the pavement...

..i'm still pullin my underwear out the crack of my ass from that...think there's about half my seat in there also...lol..

...absolutely...if you can stop the wind from getting to your skin, a thermal layer, then a good thick cotton layer, then the outter insulating, wind blocking layer works well...doesn't take much wind getting in to make a big difference...especially if the temps are below 35 F...

They are on! :)
The service for both tires has set me back 16 US$.
The scoot has 13.500 kms and this is the first tire change. Looking at thread depth, the original tires would have at least 13.500 kms more in them, but they are quite flat and this does not allow leaning in curves as I would like. OEM tires were quite "flat" from day one.... different curvature than other manufacturer's tires, I guess.
I did not drive the scoot after Dunlops were installed on the scooter, so more info on this later...

My workplace has shut down every year at this time. So I've taken several
short rides, grocery, post office, drug store. 10 miles yesterday.

Urbestfriend has a $4.99 Bacalava, Run of the mill insulated gloves and his
always present ANSI 3 Fluorescent Lime Yellow or Orange Jacket. I can't
emphasize enough the safety and security wearing one of these jackets
has provided. TSA (Transportation Safety Apparel) formerly "Waste Safety"
has a whole line of safety apparel (3 season Jackets from $25,00 to $99.00).
These Jackets are well insulated , have several zip up pockets, and are PolyU
coated which make them exceptionally waterproof riding in the rain.

Beside these advantages, they command considerable respect. A recent law requires
workers on any Federally Funded Highway to wear similar approved clothing. And my
wife always finds me more easily at Walmart.

They say suns gonna come out and it will warm up to 24 today by 3:00 PM. I think I will pass on a ride today. Yesterday it was nice, didn't get chilly until I jumped up on the xpressway. Wind chill at 65 MPH was a bit more than my outfit could handle, good thing it was on the way back home. That's how it went in Louisville, KY. I do notice that parts of Florida went from the low 80's on New Years to low 30's the day after. Now that's thermal shock...

Post by: garumn on January 17, 2010, 12:31:43 AM: Phoenix, AZ (USA) here - kinda chilly in the mornings (30-40) but it usually warms up to 70F in the afternoons this time of year. Layers, layers, layers, with a wind/water-proof shell is an ideal combination. I ride the freeway (55-60 mph) back and forth from work for about 25 miles and never get cold or wet, with one exception. The only complaint I have is the cold wind coming up underneath my facemask! The balaklava (sp?) does wonders keeping the cold off my face/neck, but my face up around my eyes gets very cold and dry, which is not a good combination (especially wearing contact lenses) at 4:00 in the morning! Does anyone recommend anything for this issue of mine? Bigger windshield? 20 scarves? Driving the car instead? ;)

It keeps the wind chill off, but looks pretty stupid at the lounge afterwards. N.W. Fla. does have some CRAZY patterns. Shorts one day, and chap stick on your face the next! Go Figure?!?

Post by: winginman on January 18, 2010, 03:28:56 PM: Got some of those battery operated gloves and insoles on the way. These use 3 AA batteries and say you can use rechargeable batteries. I will give them a try and report back. Got to ride Saturday when it got to about 48 F. Seemed like a heat wave, had to watch the road real close. That salt stuff is like hitting sand in the curves, just have to be very watchful and keep the speed down. Wanted to ride yesterday, but it rained all day. At least the roads will get washed off.

Leather is the way to go, legs do get a little cold wind does break through jeans, but walmart has these great jeans that have insulation in them never saw them before but well worth 15 bucks. The problem I have is showing up places with bloodshot eyes even with the full face helmet still end up getting bloodshot might have to bring some clear eyes where ever i go, and no there isnt a bong attached to my helmet, how sweet would that be. ha ha

On a side note, I won an Ixus winter jacket on Ebay last week for $5.50, and its amazig how good this is when riding to work at 5am. Really cuts out the cold. Combined with the new helmet its a lot warmer now, but it has also highlighted how cold my legs are now, as thats the only thing I have nothing for. Searching ebay as we speak for some decent waterproof pants for winter....

OBARK, I knew they ware crazy in NYC, but tell us about riding in the snow. You do anything to the tires? I think my X500 would be too much in the snow. I will venture out when it's cold, but turn chicken when the white stuff starts hitting the ground. It hurts to fall and plastic is too expensive.

A week or two ago I was on it in 18 degree weather, windchill about 5. I wear my suit, suit jacket, Trench Coat, full shield helmut and cheap walmart embark gloves (10$ US). Ofcourse it's alot better to do now that I learned I can actually close the vents in my helmut. LOL Today its 35 degree, and still piles of snow on the side of the roads. It's 8 am and I will be riding in about 30 minutes. ;D

We don't get very cold here, mid winter it gets down to about zero occasionaly which is nothing to what you blokes get but it is riding weather all year round.
Holty, we passed through Warnambool a few years ago on a driving holiday, wife absolutely loved the place, suggested we sell up and move there.
With regards to bikes I will have to try to post up some pics.

THE X-500 IS A BIGGER SCOOTER BUT MY SUPER 9 IS MORE MANAGEABLE AND EASY TO HOLD UP IN THE SNOW---SO DON'T DO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
