Title: Variator belt age

Is it just the width of the belt that determines replacement or does age matter?  I just bought a 2007 People that only has 1000 miles on it, but it is 8 years old.

Over age the material gets old so it might last much less.. get it running strong and then adress the belt just to have a reliable commuter

I recently changed mine belt for the first time. I rode it for 7+ years and 10,000 kilometers. I did not measure it, since I was doing some CVT upgrades and replacing the belt was "just in case" type of thing, but it looked quite OK. I did not notice any signs of rubber aging, no cracks and so on.
I would inspect & measure yours. It might not be the top priority thing to replace.

They last pretty good, but just out of habit I replace any belt that's over 5 years old. The older they get the more noise they make, and since the rubber hardens it adds friction to an already high friction design of transmission.
