Title: Reeds from malossi bbk
Post by: Triesandluth on June 25, 2015, 12:13:34 PM
I believe I've read elsewhere that the reeds sent with the kit do not work for the super9. If I recall,  the reeds in the bike are larger than what they sent me.  These look tiny.  Anyone know?

I just did a Malossi kit on a People 50 and the reeds it came with were too small for the People 50 block.

As soon as I seen the thread I knew the contents LOL.  My kit just came in and the reeds are way too narrow. I had the same issue with a set of CF reeds I purchased for the Super 9 from KD Air out of Germany. I will call Scooterparts Co. and see whats up.

They make zero difference. Most times they actually fail, and make issues.

I use blank CF stock to cut my own.

I've heard that.  I've also heard that these stock ones are rather awesome and to use them until they quit

I think I have seen ONE failed stainless reed in 40+ years of building engines. Perhaps 50-100 failed fiberglass, and 25-30 failed CF reeds.

I think the best route is to punch a bunch of 3/16th holes in the stainless, and back the holes with 0.2mm CF reed blank to make a solid 2 stage reed.
That will provide much better low end, and retain the top rpms. I'll post up when I make mine in a few weeks.

Edit:
sandwich the stainless between two sheets of 1/8th in steel to prevent distorting the stainless. Clamp it tighter than F8ck...

Thanks for the link. Ive also thought about making my own but not sure of the thickness.  I think the PO installed aftermarket reeds. They dont feel like my DK Carbon fiber reeds, theyre black and feel like the malossi reeds but to be honest Im not sure the Malossi reeds Are CF, theyre opaque and no visible weave so I tend to think they and the reeds currently installed are fiberglass not carbonfiber.

Squatch... Fiberglass. CF can not be mistaken, and is 100% non see thru.

Most reeds in these bikes are .4mm in CF, or .6mm in glass. Stainless is around .5-.6mm

B&L... I have to try making a set from Blastic. Where do you find this new, and exciting product? Is it on Amazon???
Is this something you stock??? I NEED some. Now I can't sleep!

I'd post pics, but the forum protocol suck something horrible and no matter what I do it says the picture is too large. I would figure a forum/site with this size and volume would allow pics larger the 192kb.  Guess not :\

The last People 50 I did a Malossi 70cc had black plastic reeds, they were not carbon fiber but a solid black no carbon weaving at all. I have also taken a few Kymcos apart that have the normal metal reeds.

It might be someone is making "knock offs". I can see where certain plastics would work because Poly, and Epoxy resins are both plastic.
I just can't see a non reinforced reed lasting too long without either warping or fracturing.

When I was maybe 15-16 I broke a reed in a Yamaha 175 enduro. Maybe 40 miles from home on the power line trails.
I made a replacement out of my library card, It got me home... Barely but it did work.
